Ray Shaw Obituary

By David Perlmutt, The Charlotte Observer

Ray Shaw, chairman of the Charlotte-based company that owns Charlotte Business Journal and 40 other business publications across the country, died Sunday from apparent complications from a bee sting. He was 75.

Shaw was in the garage at his southeast Charlotte home Saturday when he was stung by a yellow jacket that triggered an immediate reaction and “a pretty extensive collapse,” said his son, Whit Shaw, the company's executive vice president.

He was revived and placed on a ventilator, but died early Sunday.

A veteran newsman, Shaw had a knack for the business side of news operations.

In 1989, after heading the business operations of Dow Jones & Co., owner of the Wall Street Journal, he retired and bought the American City Business Journals, which owned the Charlotte journal and 20 others.

With sons Whit and Kirk, the Shaws moved the company to Charlotte and doubled its size to 41 business journals – the country's largest chain of business newsweeklies. It also owns The Sporting News, Hemmings Motor News and NASCAR Scene. Shaw sold control of the company in 1995, but remained as chairman.

“Ray was a traditionalist in many ways: in manners, in standards and in expectations,” said Mark Ethridge, a former Observer managing editor who also worked for Shaw for more than 10 years as publisher of several business journals, including the one in Charlotte. “But he was so innovative, so willing to think outside the box and take risks.”

Ethridge and others say Shaw took care of those who worked for him. If you had a child dancing at a recital or playing baseball, he didn't care if you took off work early.

“I've never seen a man who cared more for the people who worked for him than Ray did,” said Wedge Abels, the company's information and technology director. “He knew the success of the individual translated into the success of the company.”

Truth be told, his son Whit said, “he was always in the stands, too, watching his grandchildren. Family was important to him.”

Shaw was raised in smalltown Oklahoma, in El Reno, where he wrote for the local newspaper in 9th grade. He left the University of Oklahoma to take a job in Oklahoma City with Associated Press, which sent him to Louisville, Ky., then New York.

In 1960, Shaw began a 29-year career at Dow Jones, first as a business reporter at the Wall Street Journal and then in several editorial positions, before jumping to the company's business side. In 1989, he took early retirement at 55 as Dow Jones' president and chief operating officer. During his tenure, Dow Jones revenues more than tripled to $1.7 billion.

He and wife Kay moved to Charlotte, where their children and grandchildren were living.

He didn't stay retired long, soon deciding to meet with the founder of the American City Business Journals. Shaw wanted to buy the Charlotte Business Journal and a couple of others, Whit Shaw said.

“The founder told him, ‘Why don't you buy the whole company, instead?'” Whit Shaw recalled. “He wanted to get into business with my brother and me, and things fell into place.”

In April, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers gave Ray Shaw its 19th Distinguished Achievement Award.

Whit Shaw said his father never had problems with bee stings. As many as 90 to 100 people in the United States die from allergic reactions to insect stings, according to the federal government.

Shaw had heart problems in earlier years. He was old enough to retire a second time, but put in full work weeks, as he did last week, Whit Shaw said. “That was typical Ray Shaw,” the son said.

“I'm sure he put in a full day Friday, and was doing typical Saturday morning stuff when this happened. He was a great guy.”

Shaw family;
I didn't know Mr. Shaw, but from reading the words of those who did know him, I can tell he was really loved by many.
I pray that God comforts you all during this difficult time. To lose someone so senselessly and unexpectedly has to be very difficult.

May God be with you.

I am so sorry for the lost of your dear loved one. It's comforting to know that God cares for all of us and losing a loved one is something we cannot get used to. The Bible gives us hope that one day we can see our dear loved one again. On behalf of all mankind Jesus surrender his soul for many. John 15:13 says “No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul on behalf of his friends.” Truly I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dear loved one and I hope these few words will bring you comfort and hope.

Kirk, The Shaw Family, and ACBJ family:

So sorry to hear of Mr. Shaw's passing. In almost 6 years with ACBJ, I knew him simply as an employee far down the org chart - but had the privilege of watching him motivate and direct "the troops".

If business were war, he's the man I would want as General. I never had to guess if I was being led by competent people - ever.

A distinct pleasure to have served a company he ran.

Mr Shaw will be missed by so many, because he was so memorable.

Kay - The shocking news of Ray's death came to me via an email from EHS classmate, Bernice Buird Miller, in Texas. Of course, I remember Ray as "Coy," and you as Kathleen. I've been reading my mother's diaries and found many entries of your family visiting with mine. I personally recall that on one occasion, as we were playing with metal cap-guns, you chipped one of your front teeth. If it would be possible, I would like to exchange emails with you. My email address is [email protected]. In the midst of my shock please accept my sincere compassion for you and your family during this extremely trying experience. Shalom...Thomas M. Hardwick

Kay and Family
Ray was a colleague, a good boss, and a fine man. My most remembered time with him was when we toured El Reno one hot Oklahoma summer day. We drove by his boyhood home, your home, and had a hamburger at his high school haunt - Jimmy's (or Johnnie's) restaurant. What a day! What a life! Our prayers for you and yours.

To Kay, Whit, Kirk and Beth,
I'm shocked. Ray was so much bigger than life I thought this day would never come. I have spent the morning reflecting on the many memories I have of Ray and of your family during the many years he and I worked together at Dow Jones. He was a rarity - a consummate news person who also had keen business skills and, most of all, common sense. And, above all, he loved family. All of you will be in my prayers in the coming days.

I only met Mr. Shaw on one occasion at an event at Charlotte Country Day School, but I have felt and seen the reach of his spirit through the lives of many he has touched over the years. I know he will be greatly missed. I am quite certain, however, that the tenderness of his kindness combined with the power and integrity of his business acumen, will be felt forever.

Ray Shaw and his sons, Whit and Kirk, are the type of people you want to work for your entire career. When they named me editor of NASCAR Winston Cup Scene in January 1993 it was a professional dream come true, but it was their caring for you as a person that made it a fantastic place to work. Ray always had time to talk with you and he was truly interested in your well being, as well as the publication for which you worked. He appreciated and encouraged family. During my first year as Scene's editor, he wanted to make sure my parents could attend the races at Charlotte while I was working, so he hired a limo to transport them from my house to the track and provided them with seats in our company suite. When Alan Kulwicki was killed, the Shaws made sure I was able to get to Wisconsin for Alan's funeral. Ray Shaw was the type of man you would gladly work long hours for because you knew he supported you and you never wanted to let him down. His death is a tremendous blow to his family and the publishing business. Even though I had not spoken with him since 2003 when I left as Scene's editor, I thought of him often and I will miss him.

I worked at then Winston Cup Scene and Illustrated in the early 90's and it is still one of the best places I ever worked. It was nice to see an owner and his family deeply involved with the employees every single day. Ray was always approachable, friendly and eager to stop and engage me in conversation. Even if it was just talk about the weekend. He truly cared. The Shaw family will never be matched and my sympathies are with you.
