I asked some of your colleagues in Clarksdale last week about you and learned you were ill. I sent a message that I never realized you would not receive. But the memories I have of Harris Barnes are of a true professional who loved the business and people of Agriculture. Harris Barnes was always the caring contributor and replacing you will be difficult.
This large family you are leaving behind should be conforted to know your memories are lined with respect and love.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Barnes and his brother at a book signing in Vicksburg, MS. He was the picture of a true southern gentleman. As an amature journalist and photograper myself, I know his loss will be felt by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am so thankful to have been fortunate enough to be a close friend all of my farming life with Harris and especially for the Lord letting me spend so much quality time with him this past year.

I awoke this morning, sat at my desk with a cup of coffee to check the agricultural updates from across the cotton belt, and learned of Harris's passing.
I am sad that he has left us, but can truly say my life was blessed by knowing and working with Harris Barnes!
I spent Friday looking at cotton plots in Lee county SC, where Harris and I spent time together in the late 80's working to gather farmer testimonials for Dow Chemical. Harris was on my mind last week............I had been meaning to send him a card to let him know how I was doing, but instead I now post this condolence.
What a fine man he was. His manner and ways with people were unsurpassed, and his work ethic/ professionalisim outstanding. I can still see him (76 years old)in blue jeans and printed cotton shirt, climbing up on the top of his Chevrolet station wagon, positioning for that perfect crop shot. Boy,could he take good pictures! He taught me a few points:
1.)He always wanted his subjects to remove their hats and sunglasses despite the glaring July sun.
2.)Never take a picture of footprints in front of the person you were photographing.
If I could have ordered up a man to pattern a father after, it would have been Harris!
In the prolouge to Pat Conroy's novel The Prince Of Tides, he speaks of geography as "my anchorage,my port of call".
Harris'epilouge might echo ,that he too was truly rooted in our wonderful geography of the South and it's people, culture, and agriculture.
I wish I could be in Clarksdale today to pay my respects in person on this beautiful Sunday, but will keep Harris and his family in my thoughts and prayers
Farewell Harris. My life is richer for having known you.

I am a professional photographer specializing in agriculture. Harris left a wide trail for me and others to follow. I continue to be amazed by the number of people I run into who ask me if I know Harris Barnes. I am proud to say that I new him.
