Mary Mangan Obituary

Sister Mary Bonaventure Mangan, a legendary educator in Tarrant County, died peacefully at Holy Spirit Convent in San Antonio on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007.
Services: All services will be held at Holy Spirit Convent, 301 Yucca Street, San Antonio 78203. Reception of the body with evening prayer: 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the wake service at 7 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection: 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cassata Learning Center, 1400 Hemphill Street, Fort Worth 76104, or to the Ministries of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit, 301 Yucca Street, San Antonio 78203-2351.
She was born in County Limerick, Ireland, on Jan. 19, 1914, and joined the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate in 1932. After receiving degrees from the University of Incarnate Word and St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Sister Bonaventure taught in various schools of the Congregation in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
She was the principal of Our Mother of Mercy Elementary School in Fort Worth from 1962-1975 and associate superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Fort Worth from 1974-1983. In 1975 she co-founded Cassata Learning Center, an alternative school designed to meet the students’ needs through nontraditional, personalized education. She worked at Cassata until she retired in 1998.
Jody Lancarte of Joe T. Garcia’s said that Sister Bonaventure "opened her arms and heart to all and inspired us to be better persons. She was an amazing woman who was ahead of her time. She thought that working hard would answer every problem. Sister was always positive seeing the glass as full rather than half-full."
Sister Mary Venard Fulbright remembers Sister "as an excellent educator who had a passion for inclusiveness. Sister Bonaventure made every person whom she met feel special. She was relentless in seeking help for those who needed it as illustrated by her remark to a potential donor: 'This is the last time I will give you the opportunity to support these worthy youngsters.'"
Survivors: Two sisters, Sister Rosaline Mangan, England, and Bridie Kiely, Ireland; and one brother, John of Washington state; and numerous relatives and friends.

Sister Bonaventure sought a solution for young people falling through the "cracks" in traditional education. Her solution was the opening of Cassata Learning Center- one of Tarrant County's first alternative high schools. Sister's gift of inspiring others to achieve positive results under great odds, affected the lives of Cassata students, as well as the faculty and staff. I feel honored to have worked at Cassata with Sister as associate director and principal.
