I went to the Department of Moral Philosophy at St. Andrews University as a Junior Lecturer in 1960, where Tony was initially a slightly terrifying boss to have, but during the seven years I spent in his department our professional relationship soon turned to friendship. He used staff seminars to air legal-philosophical issues, and this stimulated my interest in the subject, which became my main teaching focus when in 1967 I left St Andrews to work in the Department of Politics at Reading University. Sadly, we had no more contact after 1967 when we both went our separate ways from St Andrews, but I have been delighted and amazed to read of the richly varied academic interests he continued to have until quite late in life. He was an inspiring teacher and colleague, and I am proud to have known him. Incidentally, it was I who introduced him to the operas of Janacek, to which he became especially drawn.

Bien chère Cora,
Nous sommes bouleversés. Nous aimions beaucoup Tony, c'était un gentleman d'une rare gentillesse. Nous pensons à toi.
Jean-Yves t'écrira à son retour.
With Love
