Jon Holman Moores, age 76, died Monday, July 20, 2009. He was born in Fayetteville, Tenn., to Cyrus Lemuel Moores and Jean Flack Holman. He was a graduate of Lincoln County High School in Fayetteville and was a letterman in football, basketball and baseball.
He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Law School. At Vanderbilt, he was a member and president of Sigma Chi Fraternity and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honorary fraternity. At Vanderbilt Law School, he was a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and the Vanderbilt Law Review.
He was a retired partner of the law firm Harris, Caddell and Shanks, P.C., and previously a partner of Caddell, Shanks, Harris, Moores & Murphree. Mr. Moores was a member of the Bar Association of Morgan County (president), Alabama Bar Association (vice president), Tennessee Bar Association and Alabama Defense Lawyers Association. He was an Alabama Bar Commissioner. He practiced law in Decatur for over forty years.
Mr. Moores was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, elder and trustee. He was an active servant to the city of Decatur in many capacities, including the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Association, Rotary Club and Decatur Jaycees. He also volunteered as a youth baseball coach for many years. He was a founding director of First American Bank and served on the board of directors for 22 years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlotte Orr Moores; and four children, Jean Moores Tauss (Gary) of Vancouver, B.C., Robert Wilson Moores of Huntsville, and Jon Holman "Jack" Moores Jr. (Kendal), and Louise Moores Brown (Steve), both of Decatur. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Robert Wilson Moores Jr., Jon Holman Moores III, Elizabeth Grace Hess, Jon Garrett Moores, William Webster Brown, Charlotte Jean Tauss, Landess Louise Brown and Charles Curran Moores.
There will be a graveside service at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Roselawn Cemetery, Roselawn Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Neighborhood Christian Center, 706 Bank St., Decatur, AL 35601, or the Decatur Free Clinic, 245 Jackson St., Decatur, AL 35601.
