Douglas Nicholson Obituary

Nicholson, Douglas
Robert
Cincinnati, OH: A long-time resident of the Rochester, NY area, passed away in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 20, 2007, after a brief illness; Bob was 85. Bob had recently moved to Cincinnati to live closer to his children.
Bob grew up in Avon, New York. He attended the University of Rochester on a full scholarship, and received his B.A. in Mathematics in 1942. He then entered the Navy and served as an officer on the USS Mervine, DD-489, a destroyer escorting ships across the North Atlantic during WW II. After the war ended, Bob was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Lieutenant and he resumed a promising career as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals' farm club system. Seeking a more traditional vocation, Bob returned to graduate school at the University of Rochester where he earned an MS in Business Administration in 1948. He took and quickly passed the rigorous CPA exams, and was hired by the accounting firm of Williams Clapp & Co., which later merged with Deloitte, Haskins & Sells. Bob became managing partner of the Rochester office of Deloitte, Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte & Touche) in 1967, where he served numerous clients with distinction until he retired in 1982. After retiring, Bob maintained a part-time association with the firm, as well as a limited private practice. Bob was listed in "Who's Who in America" for many years. During his retirement, Bob had more time to deliberate on the economic problems faced by the United States. Bob wrote a book (published in 2002) addressed to the ". . . people in the United States who are at or below the poverty level in income, most of whom cannot afford a college education for their children, and many of whom have no health insurance." Bob presented his beliefs about solutions to problems that have plagued the less fortunate members of our country. Bob's hope is that responsible people will read and follow his prescription for curing these serious social problems. In addition to his accounting career, Bob served as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of Highland Hospital and he taught mathematics at the University of Rochester for many years. Bob was a major contributor to the University, and he assisted with numerous capital fund drives for the University and for the Rochester Institute of Technology. In his private life, Bob was a master bridge player, he built several grandfather clocks, and there was not a household appliance or fixture that he could not fix. Repairmen rarely visited the Nicholson house. Bob loved to play golf, tennis, and squash. He was a member of Oak Hill Country Club for many years where he greatly enjoyed the challenges of the East Course.
Bob married his college sweetheart, Gertrude Scott, in 1944. Together they raised four children, gave generously to many charities, and traveled extensively. Gertrude passed away in 1996. Bob was also predeceased by his sisters Jeanette, Beverly and Frances, and by his brother Richard. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Elmer Liljenquist; his daughters and their husbands Laurie & Bruce Allman, and Susan & Ed Atkisson, his sons and their wives, Scott & Donna and Steven & Sheri; and by his granddaughters Yazmine Jade and Misty Lynn, and his grandsons Kirk and Isiah Pistner. He is also survived by his niece, Christi Caruso, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews and 8 step-grandchildren.
Bob will be missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. At Bob's request, private services will be held for his family. Memorials may be made to the D. Robert Nicholson Endowed Scholarship Fund, c/o Monroe Community College Foundation, 228 East Main Street, Rochester, NY 14604, or to Sunset House Hospice, 3746 St. Paul Blvd., Rochester, NY 14617. Remembrances to the family may be sent c/o Laurie Nicholson, 6526 Harnesswood Court, Mason, OH 45040, or c/o Susan Nicholson, 1535 Indian Meadows Drive, Franklin, TN 37064.

Dear Laurie, Scott, Steve, and Susan, my cousins... I want you to know what an intriguing man your Dad was to me. A truly mysterious man. What you said at the Memorial Steve, was great. "He didn't believe in saying much unless it had value!" What I really wanted to share with you was the joy I felt at his memorial . Even before the memorial I felt it. I had told a friend that morning that I felt such joy and I couldn't explain it. Only when I arrived there at the service, did I realize why! Laurie when I saw you dancing to the song "Amazing Grace"at the burial the joy that I felt, was uncontainable- just like the torrents of rain water that rained down on the tent. And then when the song ended , the rain had stopped and the sun was shining! What a wonderful celebration of your fathers life that was ..
As I was pondering my own fathers life recently, I came across a poignant quote from Chuck Swindoll. I don't know if these were his words, or he was quoting somebody else....."A life well lived is never truly forgotten, but often takes on a whole new dimension. It even gathers wings and flies- far and wide, as messages of integrity, truth, honesty, and humility, linger in others minds.......Truly your Dad and mine were men with strong values and principles to live by.... They will never be forgotten! I love you all and you will be in my prayers in the months ahead. With love, Ruth (Nicholson) Magin

Dear Family
What a fitting obituary-Bob was all of what was written and more.I worked for Haskins & Sells from May 1970 through January 1976 and continued to see Bob at tax seminars in Syracuse in the late 80's and early to mid 90's.My heartfelt sympathy - saying goodbye is never easy - regardless of how long one has lived and the footprints they left on the path of life with whom they walked.

Mr. Nicholson was a very excellent person and it was a privilege to know him. He was the kind of dad everyone should have.
