Cyrus McKell Obituary

Cyrus Milo McKell, Ph.D. 1926 ~ 2009 Cyrus McKell was born in Payson, Utah, in March, 1926, the son of Robert Dewey McKell and Mary Cecelia Ellsworth. He was the second of three sons and an older daughter. When he was only nine years old, his father died unexpectedly. His mother raised the young family as a single mother, during the Depression, working afternoons and evenings as the Librarian for the Payson City Library. Cyrus attended school in Payson. Upon graduation from high school in 1944, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation student in Texas but he did not finish his training before World War II ended. He then returned to Utah to attend college at University of Utah. He married the love of his life, Betty Marie Johnson, in 1947, after meeting her through his sister, Jean Marie, who was Betty's supervisor. They had three boys and two girls. One son and one daughter did not survive the birth process. Cyrus earned a B.S. degree in Biology and a M.S. degree in Botany and Geography, at the University of Utah. He was a member of ROTC. In 1952, President Dwight Eisenhower awarded him his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He completed Medical Service Officer Training, becoming an Administrative Officer of the Air Force Base Hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas. After the war, he was the Principal of Tabiona Schools in Tabiona, Utah for a year. To fulfill his goal of higher education, he and Betty moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where he earned a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology, Range Management & Soils at Oregon State College (University). He gained wide experience and professional contacts in his subsequent employment as a USDA Range Plant Physiologist at the University of California at Davis campus, where he also did postdoctoral work in Crop Physiology. From there, he was invited to be the Chairman of the Agronomy Department at University of California at Riverside, where he attained full professorship. After almost a decade in Southern California, he returned to his Utah roots in 1969, accepting the Chairmanship of the Range Management Department at Utah State University. From 1971-1975, he was Director of the Environment and Man Program, a grant program funded by the Ford Foundation, also at Utah State University. After that, he directed the Institute for Land Rehabilitation from 1976 to 1981 at Utah State University. Cyrus never "applied" for jobs, he merely had to decide among the myriad employment offers that constantly came to him during his career. From Utah State University, he moved into the business world, where he served as Vice President for Research at NPI, a biotechnology company, in Salt Lake City. Cyrus returned to academia, this time at Weber State University, where he fulfilled his dream of serving as Dean of the College of Science. He continued his involvement with Weber State long after his retirement, establishing a botany scholarship there. Though always modest of his accomplishments, his research has resulted in over 230 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including editor or co-editor of 7 books. He received a Rockefeller Foundation Travel Grant to Nigeria in 1965, a Fulbright Academic Fellowship to Spain in 1967-68, a six month project in Kenya with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Governors Medal in Science and Technology in 1990, and in 1999, he received the Willard Gardner Prize for Distinguished Accomplishments in the Sciences. He has served as a member of the Utah Governor's Science Advisory Council and a member of Cache County Planning Commission. During his academic career, he served as a member or chair of scientific consulting groups to foreign countries, being sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, United Nations FAO, USAID, American Academy for the Advancement of Science and the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations. He consulted on agricultural field work and environmental development problems in over 30 countries, including, but not limited to, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Mexico, China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Malaysia, Australia, and Cyprus. Retirement was anathema to Cyrus. He told everyone that he "would never retire;" that he "would work until he died." In fact, this is exactly so, because at the time of the circumstances leading to his passing, he was repairing the sprinklers for his condominium complex, a volunteer position that he joyfully performed. Though he officially retired from Weber State in 1995, he continued to head various community enrichment projects, as well as serving as a consultant with Applied Ecological Services, Inc. as well as Oasis Industries, Inc. His last community service included membership on the Holladay City Planning Commission, a position he has held since 2003. He also served as Editor of the Sons of Utah Pioneers monthly newsletter. He was working on the next newsletter at the time of his passing. He remained active in the LDS Church. Cyrus was a teacher, mentor, role model, and counselor to many people in his life. He had hundreds of students who benefited from his guidance. As a husband, father, and grandfather and great-grandfather, he was the most loving and beloved of all-"the Best Daddy, Grandpa and Great Grandpa Ever." His love of education and personal advancement left a lasting legacy on the world. He was truly a force for good in the world and always looked for the positive in everyone and everything. We will sorely miss his ready wit and enduring smile. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Marie. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 16th. He leaves his two sons and his daughter. His surviving children are all college graduates: His daughter, Meredith (Eugene), is a solo family law attorney in Vancouver, Washington. Brian (Silvia) is Of Counsel in his law firm in Miami, Florida. His son, John (Jana), is a software engineering manager in Logan, Utah. At this time, he has ten grandchildren, and two months ago, he welcomed his first great-granddaughter, the third great-grandchild to his family. Cyrus's viewing will be held at the Holladay Town Hall, 4580 South 2300 East, in Holladay, Utah at 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with a short viewing period from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Holladay North Stake Center, 4395 South Albright Drive (2145 East). Interment and Dedication of the Grave will be at the Spanish Fork Cemetery following the service at 2:00 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.holbrookmortuary.com Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made at any Chase Bank branch to The Cyrus M. McKell Education Scholarship Fund, an IRS-approved tax exempt charity, of which donations will be forwarded from the Fund to Dr. McKell's Botany Scholarship at Weber State University. The family would like to invite all those who valued Dr. McKell's influence to join him and his love of education by supporting his scholarship program.

Dear Betty and the McKell Family

Cy’s legacy is in his family, his deeds and the people he mentored and advised. Cy mentored me through a PhD at Utah State University and surely played a significant role in my move to UC Davis as Extension Rangeland Management Specialist in 1978. Early in my UC Davis career he just showed up one day to say hello and see how I was doing. Over the years we have exchanged notes, emails and phone calls just to check in. I will remember my last meeting with Cy and Betty at the Society for Range Management’s annual meeting in Salt Lake City.

Under his mentorship I grew as a professional and learned to teach. Gail and I extend our condolences to Betty and the rest of the McKell family. Cy McKell is not only best dad, grandpa and great-grandpa but also “best major professor”.

Cy, may the wind always be at your back and the grass always greener at the next camp.

It’s truly amazing how many descendants of Milo Andrus and Lucy Loomis Tuttle have lived lives of great distinction. Though I did not personally know Dr McKell, as a Lucy Loomis Tuttle descendant I am truly indebted to him for all his years of service. Thank You

Cy McKell was and is a personal hero. In his presence, I knew there was a better way to live my life. Humble, compassionate, spiritual, bright, witty, and always present in the moment with a listening ear and light in his eyes. I look forward, in an even better place, to wrap my arms around him and thank him personally for his silent, profound contributions in my life.

I served in a calling with Cy in the Valley View 11th Ward and I consider him one of the finest examples of a man. He was such a hard worker and a kind spirit. I often found myself wanting to be more like Cy Mckell. I learned so much about attitude from this man. He will be missed!

I have always felt blessed to be apart of such a strong and loving family. My Grandpa & Grandma (William and Freda) Mckell always talked and told stories of the past about Uncle Cy and all of their other siblings and how they got through everything together. Knowing all those stories and memories and feelings that were shared, our families always were close, so seeing and talking with each other at family reunions and get together was always a blessing and a good trip down memory lane and creating great paths for the future. My family and I give our deepest condolences. Great Uncle Cy will be missed.

Dear Betty, Meredith, Brian and John:
Janeal and I offer you our most sincere condolences in the passing of Cy. I have often said he was one of a kind and really believe that. I can say I have known three key people over the years (other than family) who have played a critical role in my life. Cy was one of those three! I will forever be indebted to Cy for providing a wonderful example. He was one who gave vision, encouragement and confidence at pivotal points in my life. Thanks to each of you for sharing him with me. It seems like just yesterday that we were all young and living during a wonderful era in Riverside CA. We pray for our Heavenly Father to bless you all with his most choice blessings of love and comfort at this difficult time

Aunt Betty,
I have always felt blessed that Grandpa Hardy married Grandma Mary. I couldn't have had better relatives than my McKell steps, who didn't feel like steps. When I was traveling for my company some years back to visit Evans and Sutherland Computer, I got to visit with Uncle Cy several times and at least once with both of you. I was proud to know him. Please keep in touch, at least at Christmas.
Love,

Now that I live in the area I wish I had made time to get to know Uncle Cyrus better. I guess you always think there will be time later and then you see a newscast and it all changes.
My sincere condolences to the family.

I love my grandpa so much. He was always my favorite person in the world and even now that I'm married, he is tied for first. He was my hero and inspiration, mentor, and friend. I love him and will never forget him!

Our whole community mourns the loss of Cy. He was always smiling and willing to help or offer advice on planting various trees, shrubs and flowers in our complex. We had many interesting conversations about world travel as he had been to, and lived in, some very exotic places. My sympathy goes out to Betty and family, wishing them the strength to carry on Cy's legacy.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Cy was a wonderful friend, mentor, and colleague. As the Dean of the College of Science at Weber State University, he advanced the institution in many significant ways. He was always supportive of the faculty, and was a true friend to the students and the staff.

Cy was an inspiring man. I (Sam) treasured our association. We enjoyed working together on our book: "Wilderness Issues in the Arid Lands of the Western United States."

Cy was a transformative person who made the world a much better place. Our deep condolences are with Betty and the family on this tragic loss.
