LaMar Berrett Obituary

LaMar C. Berrett 1926 ~ 2007 LaMar C. Berrett passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, August 25, 2007. He was a man of integrity, determination, order, and love, in undeviating pursuit of righteousness. LaMar was born March 28, 1926, in Riverton, Utah, to his loving parents, John Harold Berrett and Stella Wright. He was one of seven children. At the tender age of 18, during World War II, he was sent to Belgium, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, seeing 110 combat days for the US Army. After his military service, he served a mission for the LDS Church, in the Southern States Mission, and in later years served a mission with his wife in Kirtland, Ohio. LaMar married his sweetheart, Darlene Hamilton, on Aug 3, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. They recently celebrated 57 years of sweet companionship, and exciting adventure. LaMar and Darlene are the parents of nine children: Marla (Vincent) Fuerer, Kim (Ellyn), Michael (Karen), Susan (Mark) Wilcox, LeAnn (Kevin) Brock, Nathan (Tricia), Evan (Heidi), Ellen (Steven) Robison and Jared (Spring). He is also survived by his brother, Vere, and sister, Yvonne Bishop; 49 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and several other foreign born students who became part of the Berrett family. LaMar's number one priority was his family. He had a special relationship with his grandchildren, and they adored him. The family cherishes special times they have spent together on vacations and at family reunions. LaMar valued education and became a teacher. He taught LDS seminary in Heber and Copperton. He received his BS degree from the U of U, and Masters and Docotorate degrees from BYU. As a professor at BYU for 29 years, he served as Chairman of the Department of Church History and Doctrine for nine of those years. BYU honored him with the Religious Education Service Award for teaching, research and publication. He was a beloved teacher and mentor and has been a great influence in the lives of thousands of his students and colleagues. His passion for teaching led to directing Semester Abroad programs in Jerusalem, and 51 tours to Israel. Church History sites, Book of Mormon lands and other parts of the world have come alive to many who have gained an understanding of their scriptural and religious heritage under his tutelage. LaMar researched and mapped the Mormon trail, documenting the history of the restored LDS church from the eastern seaboard to the great Salt Lake Valley. He was the editor for the six volume Church History series, "Sacred Places". These books bring Church History to light and life. He was recently honored by the Oregon California Trails and America's History Trails Associations for discovery and preservation of the trails. LaMar was given the gift of drawing people to him. They respected and adored him. His life was rich with the fruits of influencing, leading, guiding and brightening the lives of others. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 30th at 11:30 a.m. at the Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East, Orem. A viewing will be held Thursday from 10-11:30 a.m. and Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the same location. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In the early 80's I took every class that I possibly could taught by Brother Berrett! He instilled a love for Church History in me that remains vibrant. I have talked about him for many years, and my children know things about him through my sharing of experiences in his classes. He and I had several private conversations after he found out that I am from the South. I loved hearing anything he had to say! His lectures not only taught about the history of the church, but also the importance of doing that which is pleasing unto the Lord. I will always remember with a smile his reference to that which will drag us down as being "carnal, sensual, and devilish", because he said it in such a quirky quick way. I use that same phrase with my teenagers! I will forever remember the wonderful experiences I had learning from him!

Dear Darlene:
I was so sorry to hear of LaMar's passing. I know how lonely and sad you are and will be for some time to come. It has been over a year and a half since Vern left me and I am still struggling. It is so hard to lose our sweethearts. I often remember our old high school days many years ago when we saw each other every day at Jordan. My, how fast the years have flown. I wish you the very best and want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I was unable to go to the funeral because I don't drive that far anymore but I wanted you to know that I care. God Bless!
Love, Claudia Marble

Dear Berrett Family,
I had the privilege of participating in two separate Holy Land "Lamar Berrett" tours as a young woman. These experiences changed my life in so many positive ways. Brother Berrett was an inspiring, energetic, personable teacher and guide. He will be missed.

Dear Darlene and Family: Although the expectation was there for his passing it still came as a shock. We so enjoyed working with LaMar doing the aerial photography of Mormon historic sites and, especially, the work at Adam-ondi-Ahamen. LaMar was an inspiration to my students working on those projects. We will miss his warm friendship and spirit.

Dear Darlene and Family: La Mar was one to be admired for his honest endeavours in research. We so enjoyed working with La Mar at Adam-ondi-Ahamen and in doing the aerial photography of church sites in our airplane. He was an inspiration to my students on these projects. We think highly of his publications on travels in the Holy Land as well as the Mormon treks. We will miss him.

My wife Laura grew up next door to LaMar's daughter Marla. When Marla learned that Laura and I were dating, she rushed over with Down Berrett Lane to show off baby pictures of me. I was one of the last Berretts to make the cut (I think only one other person younger than I was included) I'll always be grateful he compiled that book, as I feel I have grown closer to my Berrett ancestry through it.

Dearest Berrett Family,
A true saint has left this earth. I was one of his students on that legendary first Semester Abroad to Israel and was forever changed by Brother Berrett's influence. He wasn't just a teacher, he molded lives. And he lives on in every seminary and Institute class, Sunday School or Relief Society lesson taught by his many "children" throughout the kingdom of God. May you be comforted with all those fabulous memories of this giant of a man.
Love, Christie Hansen Frandsen

I am one of those who was "drawn" to Brother Berrett. I taught racquetball at BYU for 15 years and coached the Racquetball Team there for 12 of those years. Brother Berrett was a "Racquetball Junkie." He loved the game and the fun association he had with others who loved it as much as he did. He'd catch me at the racquetball courts or stop by my office once in a while just to share his enthusiasm of the game. What a delight it was to be around him! I admired so many things about him -- most of all his friendliness and happiness. I will miss seeing him! Thank you for a beautifully-written obituary about him.

Dear Darlene and family, I can't believe Brother Berrett would ever leave us. He was so outstanding in everything he did and inspired so many students.
