Richard Comtois Obituary

ALTON — Richard Arthur Comtois, of Alton, N.H., died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, after a long battle with an illness. His three sisters and two children, Chris and Tara, were by his side to the very end.

He was born in Dover, N.H., the son of Emily and Philippe Comtois. Richard grew up in Dover and soon after graduating high school, joined the U.S. Army and served his country honorably.

Richard's bravery during the Vietnam War earned him a National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, Richard worked for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was an outdoor enthusiast who loved to canoe and fish. Richard also enjoyed watching the Boston Celtics and attending New England Patriots games in close to zero degree weather. He chose to live out his days near Alton Bay because of his love for the outdoors and the close proximity to his family, friends and the water.

Richard is survived by his son, Chris, and daughter, Tara. His two grandchildren, Kaydis and Kagen; his sisters, Suzanne, Patti, and Janet; his niece, Maya and nephews, RJ, Toby, Cory and Seth also survive him.

Rich was a class member of mine from DHS, class of 68. It's sad to see a fellow veteran pass from this life. I moved away to California when I was a junior at DHS and have mostly lost contact with almost all my classmates. I remember Rich to be such a good person and have often thought of him and many others from my class. I too served in Vietnam in the USN from 1968 - 1972 (three tours). My sincere condolences to all his family and loved ones.

To The Comtois Family

Sorry to hear of your loss. I saw Richard at the Class of 68 reunion in October 2008. I had not see him since we were growing up together. I had been emailing him on occasion after he found me on "Classmates". It was great to see him at the reunion and I was shocked to see the paper today. I will miss him alot.

RICHIE********I HAD KNOWN HIM FOR MORE THAN 16 YRS. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THT I AM SO PROUD OF YOU RICHIE, FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY AND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY THOUGHTS. ANYONE THAT GOES TO WAR AND THEN GOES BACK AGAIN ON PURPOSE, IS OKAY IN MY BOOK... YOU WERE A GREAT FRIEND AND A GOOD GUY. I REMEMBER THAT YOUR FAVORITE COLOR WAS GREEN. THAT WAS EASY TO UNDERSTAND WHY, BECAUSE IT WAS THE COLOR OF YOUR ARMY UNIFORM. YOU ALWAYS DID LIKE ANYTHING THAT WAS CAMOFLASE. THE ARMY WAS PART OF YOU AND YOU WERE PART OF THE ARMY. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND LIVE AN EVERLASTING LIFE IN HEAVEN...... ALL OUR LOVE!

My condolences to Richard's family.
I knew Richard from his time spent working at the Shipyard. At the time I was the Sheet Metal Shop Union Predident and we had helped Richard with some VA issues. He had served his Country honorably and it was time for the Country to honorably serve him. I was from Massachusetts at the time and Richard gave me a POW-MIA pin with the Mass. state seal. I proudly still wear it today and it is a constant reminder of what a good man he was. You will not be forgotten.

We met Richard last year when he square danced with us. We are glad he was able to dance for a while. He seemed to enjoy it.

We are grateful for all that he sacrificed for our country so the rest of us can live in freedom.

May the memories of his family and friends bring them comfort.

I remember Richard from the apprentice program at the shipyard. For the short time I knew him, he made an impression on me and I often wondered where and how he was. I pray he has found peace.

Suzanne, Patti and Janet

When I awoke this morning and read the paper I was totally shocked to hear of my friend Richard's passing. We have not been in touch for years but we shared many many good times years ago. We hunted, fished, like to party and sometimes just sat around and shot the breeze. I will miss him and always remember him.

I hope things will be fine with all of you as time passes.

Rich was a very good friend and was more of a family member than a neighbor, we fished year around spent lots of time at the bay watching the boats and Rich loved his fried clams.
Rich was very proud to have served his country and we were very proud of him. We always went to Veteran's Day ceremonies and the moving Wall when it was around and we would look up the names of his friends on the Wall who never made it back. We shared all our Holidays with Rich and he with us,He enjoyed watching sports and rooted for the Home team. He talked often of his children and Grandchildren and was very happy with them in his heart. My Wife Marie and I will feel like a part of us is missing for a very long, but knowing Rich has been an honor and we know he is in a better place now.
