Anthony Butterfield Obituary

ANTHONY BUTTERFIELD United States Marine Corps "Tony" Tony began his life on earth on May 4, 1987, in Fresno, California. He was taken from us on Saturday, July 29, 2006. It is a date which will be remembered in our hearts as the day our hero was sent to live another life in Heaven. Tony attended Garfield Elementary School, Alta Sierra Middle School and Buchanan High School. For those fortunate enough to know Tony, they'll remember how much he loved his family, his friends, his grandmas cooking, volleyball, soccer, anywhere on the beach, and most of all he loved the Marines. He had a laugh which was one of a kind, and a smile which was contagious. He brought joy and love to many lives. He loved children and had a way about him, a presence which made them listen, learn and enjoy his stories. He had decided before his senior year that the U.S. Marine Corps would be his home after graduation, so after receiving his diploma in June he immediately left for boot camp to train with 'The Few and The Proud'. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion as a scout based out of Twentynine Palms, California, making many friends throughout all of his training. He deployed to Iraq on March 4, 2006, to serve in support of Operation Iraqi Freeedom. Tony made the ultimate sacrifice for the country that he loved. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Purple Heart. He finished his journey on earth a confident, honorable Marine, a Hero and a Man. Semper Fi. Because Tony so loved Disneyland, we have decided he would have no greater joy than to send a child and their family there each year. He is survived by his parents, Keith and Robin Butterfield; his older sister, Britney Hunt and her husband Glen; his older brother, Jeremy Butterfield; his younger sister, Bailey Butterfield; his grandparents, Bruce and Glenda Butterfield, Kay and Jack Pruett, and Ed and Paula Robinson; his aunts and uncles include Rene and Steve Mooshagian and their children Janaye, Bobby and Danielle, Teri Richey and her children Jared and Jourdan, and Eddie and Kristi Robinson and their children Danika and Rylee, all of Fresno, California. He also had numerous other great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins, relatives and many, many friends. A Funeral Service will be held at Clovis Hills Church on Tuesday, August 8, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Clovis District Cemetery. A reception at New Hope Church in Clovis will follow. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Tony's name to Wish Upon a Star Foundation, PO Box 4000, Visalia, California. BOICE FUNERAL HOME308 Pollasky, Clovis 299-4372

Tony,
Not a day goes by where I don't think about you. From your name tattooed across my arm, to the chilling radio transmition I heard that day while on post. I had the privledge to go to high school, SOI, 3rd LAR and deploy with you.
I remember the time in SOI you bet the CO, Fresno St. would beat Boise St. and the CO had to get down and push in front of everyone. That was cool!
I am so sorry it has taken me so long to come and see you, but when Matt (Abbate) died last year I had to come home to see you both and say goodbye. I'm gonna try and see you more often, pls understand that I have always felt guilty for coming home without you, yet I am so fortunate to have lived and fought by your side.

Anthony, Christian, Jason, Phillip, Randy, Chad, Adam, Shane are always in my heart and thoughts. The 29 was really a very hard day for me and my family. We had you remembered in the memorial we had here in Winter Haven " A Day of Honor & Remembrance". Two Marines of Delta Co 3rd LAR came to speak about you guys. So great to know that you will always be remembered. Ethan did great telling stories about you guys and so as Courtney. And I think as they attended the memorial it also helps them heal to speak about each one of you. The Seven warriors the Dragoons. You guys are good Marines and awesome.Semper Fidelis is the right word

It seems fitting to write to you on this Fourth of July. Without you, your brothers in arms, our veterans and all branches of the Military, we probably wouldn't know what freedom meant. From freedom of speech and religion, to the small things that we take for granted like walking our dog or shopping, I thank you. I don't think that saying thank you seem enough. I will Honor you until the day I die, and, I Will Never Forget.

Hello Mrs Butterfield and family,

I am DI Sgt Ethan Duncan Arguello's mom. Ethan served with Anthony in the 3rd LAR Wolfpack during the 2006 deployment to Iraq. He was a Lance Cpl then, now he's at Parris Island turning recruits into Marines.

I haven't posted before but I've kept you in my heart and my prayers these past years. Ethan holds him in high honor and will remember him always.
I read all their stories again this week. What a fine young man you raised.

Ethan suggested that I let you know I've mentioned Anthony in a post to my blog. I also plan to put together another post with a brief biography of Anthony and his fellow heroes between now and Memorial Day.

I wanted you to know that we will be thinking of you on this Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is a day that once was just a day for me. Then, my grandson joined the Marines and my life changed forever. I learned what the word patriotic meant, and, the sacrifices that you young heroes made. I will be at the beach on the 31st. I will sit on the beach and watch the beautiful waves which are eternal to me. I will think of you and the sacrifice you made for all of us. You, too, are eternal and will never be forgotten.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know 'Tony', but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

My prayers go out to you and your family. Tony was a good friend of my son, Lance Corporal Derek Habbley. They trained together and became close as they shared their journey of becoming a member of the Marine Corp. family. Your family was so kind and gracious to welcome my son into your home on Thanksgiving and for that I want to extend my heartfelt thanks. God bless Tony and all of the service men and women for all that they do.

I have been a Marine for 28 years. I have had my share of losing members of my Marine Corps family. I feel your loss, I mourn it, and I wish you serenity and comfort in the fact that your Marine was transferred to Heaven's Guard Duty detail. Very few things in life move me, yet the love this young man had for his family and expressed in his final letter really gripped me and made me feel proud to wear the same uniform he did. In the end I say to you "TONY"; Sleep and rest, you are the best. Thank you for your devotion and I say to you LIFE'S RACE WELL RUN, LIFE'S WORK WELL DONE. AND THE HERO'S CROWN WELL WON!
May god bless you and and keep you in his care. Semper Fidelis

It's been over a year now and I'm finally able to search around and see what Tony and his fellow Marines went through. I have a picture of Tony and Mason (Gary Jr.) On my desk and I think of them often. We are so sorry for your loss and just know he and you will be in our hearts for ever.

August 15, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Lance Cpl. Anthony Edward Butterfield. Thank you for your sacrifice. My name is Michael. I live in Knoxville, TN. While recently searching the net for my latest idea for a blog, I ran across a letter. A letter written by Anthony. A "If you're reading this letter." I can't explain the emotions I have felt since reading that letter. It was the first of it's kind I had read. A 19 'boy' gave his life for me and my country. I did some research and found some details about his life, and his death. i began to think about where I was on the day of July 29, 2006. It was 2 days before my 30th birthday. I was at the beach with my family. Little did my wife or I know the amazing sacrifice that took place at that exact time. Little did my 5 and 8 year old kids know, that a hero had just given his life for our freedom. Thank You. Thank You Lance Cpl. Anthony Edward Butterfield for your sacrifice. If anyone knows how to contact the family of Anthony, please send me an email, as I would like to send my condolences.

To our dear friends. We did not know Tony but in our hearts he never goes away.We are extremely proud of his decision to protect us at any cost. That takes a special person. It has been a year since his passing and not a day goes by that he does not enter our minds and a special prayer is said for him and all of these young men who have been so brave. Dear Tony,
Not a day goes by that we don't think of you and your family, and your passion to serve our country. It was good for us to visit with you today. We felt your warmth in the sun and your presence in the breeze that came up. As we drove home it is as if you requested that Tim McGraw song on the radio, so you could speak to us. It is hard to believe a year has passed. The little reminders of the time you shared with our family, the photos, the momentos and of course, Sebastian make us smile and we think of the you. Everytime I see a VW bus, I think of you two kids running out to Pismo. You are our hero and you are forever in our hearts.

Hi Tony. Know that everyday of my life I think about you boys. Every time I offer a prayer I pray for you that God will keep you in His arm and care although I know well that you guys are already with Him maybe doing that makes me feel better. We had a great time in DC with Kathy, her brother and the Galvez family, The Newman, and the Butterfield your family. Your mother is just so sweet. We got to meet your grand parents too.. It was a very pleasant day of reunion and the great surprise of the Remembrance is to see Kenny Lyons walking and standing on his unifrom. He did a great improvement since I last saw him at Twenty Nine Palms. We also dine with Lt Cornel Jones and his wife. Your death Anniversary is coming. I cannot believe that it is almost a year now.I arranged a Memorial for you and the seven boys of 3rd LAR Dragoons this 29th of July. It will be at St. Joseph church in Winter Haven. The services will start at 1:00 PM till 5:00 PM. There will be masses for you and the boys and few churches of Polk county will also hold a mass. Tony you have left us an extended family and thank you again.

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I know that there is nothing we can say to take away the pain you are feeling - but I just hope knowing that there are so many people out there that do care about you!

Our son is also with the 3/4 and I know that this was very hard for him.

Please know that we are thinking about you now - and in the months ahead.

Your son is a hero - and will always be remembered! He is now an angel watching over all of us.

God bless and Semper Fi,

Very Proud Marine Mom of LCpl. Brad T. - 3/4 Weapons Company

My dear Tony. It was a joy in my heart that the boys of 3rd LAR are back home safe with their families. It was also a pleasure to meet with the families of your buddies Jayson,
Philip,Adam,Chad,Randy, Shane and your dad & mom, and meeting your mom made me known you.
What kind of a person were you, and her kindness and thoughtfulness
made me remember the kindness you have shown to our country, the kindness you have shown and shared with my son Christian and your fellow Marines, the devotion of your mother to the Fallen Marines family is also seen in the
dedication you have shared with the Marine Corps and your countrymen. We are so proud of you boys. Thank you again Tony, and may you Christian and the rest of the boys enjoy peace with God, the angels and the saints. We will always remember you, and will always love you. Semper Fi.

The butterfields-

I knew tony very well, he was a huge part of my life throughout high school. He was always there for me in my time of need, I did my best to do the same. The last time I saw tony was before he left to bootcamp and I never imagined that it would be the last time I ever see him. I also know Jeremy, he's a wonderful person and a character like Tony, you guys did an amazing job rasing tony as all your beautiful children, he had a heart of gold, and he will live in mine forever. I hope that you all are hanging in there, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

To the Butterfields,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. When I first heard it hit me like a stack of bricks. Tony and I were in the delayed entry program together and I remember always looking forward to the DEP functions because I knew Issac and him would always be there crackin' jokes and having fun. I still don't want to believe but know that I am keeping you at the forefront of my mind and am constantly praying for you guys. Tony was a great person and an awesome Marine. He will be greatly missed.

It was with great sadness that my husband and I learned yesterday of Tony's passing. With a daughter in the Air Force, and a son who just got out of the Coast Guard, we have some understanding of the sacrifices that military families make. Tony and his family have made the ultimate sacrifice and he died a Hero. We remember Tony as a delightful child, full of energy and always smiling. Our hearts ache thinking of the pain that Robin, Keith and their family is going through. We are praying for them, the families of the other soldiers that were killed that day, and for every soldier who is serving our country now.

Dear Tony's Family,

I was in shock when I heard of Tony's passing. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I grew up with Tony all the way through 6th grade. We played on countless sports teams together throughout our childhood from soccer, to football, and on the playground. I even remember the 6th grade party at your house. Then I moved to Clovis West and would occasionally see him from time to time. Then along came CART. Where I was able to see Tony almost everyday. I remember Tony, David and I talking about the past and how things have changed so much. Both Tony and I talked about how we were both joining the military after high school. Tony the Marines and me the Army. Tony gave the greatest sacrifice anyone can give to our great country. I would have loved to serve with Tony in Iraq. He was my buddy and I'll never forget how he could turn anything into something funny. He will be greatly missed. I was unable to attend the funeral because of a training mission. But I will be back home in Fresno sometime in September. Tony you are my hero. God Bless the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

I did not have the honor of knowing your beloved son, Anthony. But from what I have known of him, he was so loved, as he also loved, he was very courageous and a child of the living God. May knowing he is at rest in the fathers arms, bring much comfort to his family and friends. May God's peace be yours and his spirit see you through each day.

Our hearts and minds are sad. This young man must have been totally unselfish. We never met Tony but he is part of us biologically and that makes our sadness deeper. He is a Marine forever. God will take care of him and reward him for his bravery. Life will go on but we will all be a little more gratefull for the sacrifices that are being made in Iraq. Ours is the land of the free because of the brave.

We do not know you, but our hearts go out to you in this difficult time. We do not know your pain, but share your sorrow. My husband will be deployed in October and as each day gets closer my heart aches, not knowing if he will return home safe. This weekend while visiting families in Clovis, my brother (father of Jeremiah Baro) spoke of your loss and told us he attended the vigil for Tony at Buchanan HS. We understand your loss and there are no words to express how sorry I am to hear of this news. I hope that family and friends will be near you to ease the pain of losing your son. Each time we hear of the loss of one of "our" boys, our hearts cry out. We know several families whose sons are serving in Iraq right now. We are praying for your family as we pray for all of them - for the peace that comes from knowing where your precious son is going to spend eternity, and for the merciful grace that will allow you to smile when you think of good memories and special times laughing and playing with Tony. May God above bless you and keep you. May He hold you in the palm of His hand and carry your family through this painful time. You are in our prayers.
