Loki Rourke Obituary

Mickey Rourke's remarkable comeback finds him nominated for a best actor Academy Award for his role in The Wrestler. But he'll have a heavy heart at this Sunday's Oscars -- Rourke's beloved Chihuahua, Loki, died early Tuesday morning. He was 18. Rourke told Barbara Walters in an interview for her annual Oscar special that his dogs are ''everything'' to him. He even thanked his dogs -- ''the ones who are here and the ones who aren't here anymore, because sometimes when a man's alone, all you got is your dog'' -- in his Golden Globes acceptance speech last month. Before Loki's death, Rourke had four Chihuahuas. He's had as many as 12 throughout his life. TMZ.com caught up with Rourke Tuesday night on his way out of dinner at the Waverly Inn in New York. He said Loki died about 5 a.m., and that he still didn't have the words to express how he was feeling. Rourke hosted a weekly karaoke night at RokBar in Miami Beach last year called Loki Karaoke to bring awareness to PETA Miami. The 52-year-old actor told Walters that his performance as aging professional wrestler Randy ''the Ram'' Robinson represents the best work of his career. ''It's the hardest movie I ever made, and it's the best movie I ever made,'' Rourke told Walters in an interview to air on her ABC Oscar-night special. Rourke -- who rose to fame in the '80s for his work in films including 9 ½ Weeks, Diner, Rumble Fish and Angel Heart, but whose popularity dropped off afterward -- told Walters that ``the dogs were there when no one else was there.'' ''I sort of self-destructed,'' he said. ``The wife had left, the career was over, the money was not an ounce.'' When he was at rock bottom, he said he realized, 'I don't have kids. The dogs became everything to me. The dog was looking at me going, `Who's going to take care of me?' '' Asked if he could have imagined a year ago that he'd be nominated for an Academy Award, Rourke said, ``Put it this way: I always, I always felt if I could get back in the game, I'd have a hope. I mean, I always had a hope that I would. But it's not always in your hands. It's always, there's the material, there's the director. It's all gotta sort of come together at the right time.'' Rourke said he relished the chance to take a leading role and credits director Darren Aronofsky for giving him a chance. ''I'd ruined my career, and that's all anybody would take the chance on me, would be a week here, a day here, three days there,'' he said. ``What I want to do is, I just want to do the best, the best work that I can, that I got in me. And that's what Darren [Aronofsky] brought out of me. I want to be able to take that same work ethic to the next film.''

(Isaiah 11:6) The wolf will reside for a while with the lamb, and with the young goat the leopard will lie down, and the calf and the lion and the fattened animal will all be together; and a little boy will lead them. So it will be in the not so distant future God has promised we will have access to nature's wonders in animals and never long for an animal companion ever again, what joy for all us animal lovers.

MICKEY ROURKE, WE ARE SADDENED BY YOUR LOSS OF LOKI. WE KNOW HOW YOU FEEL BECAUSE WE HAVE CATS WHO ARE OUR CHILDREN. WE HAVE 7 CATS WHO HAVE PASSED OVER AND ARE WAITING FOR US AT THE RAINBOW BRIDGE. WE HAVE NEVER GOTTEN OVER THEIR DEATHS AND NEVER WILL, WE THINK OF THEM EVERYDAY. OUR CATS THAT WE HAVE NOW RANGE IN AGE FROM 3 YEARS OLD TO 20 YEARS. THEY ARE VERY SPOILED AND PAMPERED. OUR CATS ARE AT THE CENTER OF OUR UNIVERSE, EVERYTHING REVOLVES AROUND OUR CAT FAMILY. OUR CATS ARE OUR WORLD, OUR EVERYTHING. MICKEY, YOU ARE ONE OF OUR FAVORITE ACTORS AND WE WERE SO HAPPY WHEN YOU WON YOUR ACADEMY AWARD AND WHEN YOU THANKED YOUR DOGS, I CRIED-WHAT A SWEET AND TENDER MOMENT. IT IS ALWAYS NICE TO READ ABOUT SOMEONE WHO CONSIDER THEIR PETS TO BE FAMILY JUST LIKE WE DO. MICKEY, WE WILL KEEP YOU AND YOUR DOGS IN OUR PRAYERS.

I don't know what I would do without him. I feel so much grief for your loss. I only recently saw a photo of you with your little dog and I thought, "what a great guy." My heart went out to you when I heard that Loki died. I still cry for my beloved Chihuahua who died in 1971. Beloved best friends cannot be replaced, but new ones can fill our lives as a distraction and to help ease the pain. I saw a photo of you with your new friend and wish you happiness together. Sometimes when life is too hard, they are our only reason to get up and get through the day. Good luck tonight -- hope you add Oscar to your home.

So sorry for your loss. While Loki cannot be replaced, the time will come and you will once again enjoy the love and companionship of a new pet.

As you well know, there are many pets out there still looking for their "forever home" and I am sure the right one is waiting for you now.

God Bless you and Loki both.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved pet. I, too, lost my beloved Beethoven on 4/3/07. I feel the pain as if it were yesterday. He was my dog, my defender, my partner. I was his life, his love, his leader. Your beloved dog will always be in your heart. You will be reunited someday at Rainbow Bridge. Know in your heart that your dog loved you and still does. I also lost my chihuahua, Brutus, last year at the age of 18. There were times he drove me crazy but he was a wonderful pet. At least I know I gave him as happy a life as I could and I know you did the same for your beloved pet. I believe that our pets wait for us in heaven and that we will see them again.

Loki Rourke, you are for ever and always in my heart for being a dog that was owned by a famous person who got a lot of plastic surgery but may now win an Oscar. I am so sad, I am not sure how I will go through the rest of my life here on earth knowing your in heaven -- all dogs go to heave, right?

I hope that in the after life you are also a dog, but a dog with angel wings, and you get to chase balls IN THE SKY WITH YOUR WINGS.
