Commander Thomas Anthony Vellanti

Thomas Vellanti Obituary

VELLANTI, COMMANDER THOMAS ANTHONY He was born the son of a World War I fighter pilot and housewife in Brooklyn, New York on February 13th, 1932 and passed away on December 27th, 2008. He attended high school in Bay Shore, NY and finished at Miami Edison Senior High. He graduated at the top of his class from Civil Engineering School with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Miami. He then went on to graduate from the United States Coast Guard Academy Officers Candidate School in New London, CT. He held these commands during his long and distinguished career with thirty four years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard Active Reserve. He retired at the rank of Full Commander. He also continued to work as a builder and real estate developer for fifty plus years in Homestead and the Florida Keys. He and his father, Frank Vellanti, Sr., brother Frank Vellanti II, and brother-in-law George Busher, Sr. together developed many homes is Hialeah, and The Sun Tan Village Shopping Center. They later relocated their operations to develop and name what is known as the community of Leisure City for a retirement community in South Dade County. Their company, Sun Deck Homes, developed the concept of a solidly poured concrete home which was virtually hurricane proof as a testament in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. He also developed Royal Colonial Mobile Home Park, Leisure City Stores, Coconut Palm Trading Post, Treasure Village in the Florida Keys, and Twelve Oaks RV Park in Sanford FL. He was married to his wife and soul mate, Velia, for over fifty two years and they resided in the Florida Keys. It was a true love story for many years. The city boy meets the daughter of a Sheep Rancher from Roswell, NM and the rest is history. He was the Commander but she was always the Commander-In-Chief, and that was just the way it was. In fact, he used to call her the Chief. He was her whole life and she was his. He was a true family man in every sense of the word. He must have done something right when all of his four children thought of him as their best friend and hero. Wow, what a man! His most important priority during his life was his being and speaking with his wife and family, and knowing that they were alright. He had a lot of personality. What a character - a unique combination of charisma, charm, and just good ole common sense. He was always the life of the party and he loved to be around people to laugh, joke, and eat good Italian food. He had a passion for the sea and all the peace and enjoyment it gave him. He was an avid fisherman throughout his life. From his early years growing up in Sheepshead Bay, NY to his later years on the Keys. He had many more accomplishments during his lifetime, and helped many people along the way. Through his actions, he loved and received love. He respected and received respect. We will all surely miss this wonderful man, loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and even greater human being that made this world a better place for those who knew this wonderful man. He is survived by his daughter Maria Berry; his sons. Thomas II, Joey, and Chris; son-in-law Dennis Berry; daughters-in-law, Tina, Ziggy, and Helen; grandchildren, Andrew Anthony, Regina, Marina, Matthew, Nicholas, Rocky, and Tommy III; sister, Nina Busher, sister-in-law Lucy Vellanti; cousins Joe and Marie Valicenti; and all of his loving nieces and nephews; we would like to mention a very special thank you to his long time bookkeeper and confidant Ms. Jane O'Brien, his foreman and right arm for many years Mr. Rudy Bawel, and his manager for twenty years Mr. Sid Bennet, and Dr. Raymond Crissey. Lastly, his great friends Ms. Jeanine Ianni and Ms. Elsie DuBois. And the list goes on with all of his wonderful friends. Wow! What a man! We are gonna miss you ole boy! Love Ya Pop Your Best Friends, Maria, Tom Jr., Joey and Chris Visitation on Friday, January 2nd, 2009 from 5:00 - 9:00pm at Branam Funeral Home in Homestead. Well, it has been eight months since I lost my father now and it sure has been rough without him. I miss the ole boy a lot. I think everybody misses him. He just made this world and everything in it a better place for all. I wish that he was still around for at least another couple years but that is life. In his own words he always said it is not a perfect world so get over it and move on. I will try to do just that ole boy. But it aint gonna be easy every day without you. Take care up there partner.

Dearest Uncle T, I love you, the casum your leaving can only be filled with fond memories and echos of your voice and laugh making others laugh. And for me, the true love I saw in all your greetings with Auntie Bellia. Thank You and Auntie Bellia for being loving and supportive, always and unconditionally.
Thank you for doing me the honor of walking me down the isle at St.Patricks. And you and I know how special it was for you to allow me to continue to drive the GTO, even after I almost ran off the road on our family trip to New Mexico.
Auntie Bellia, Mia, Tommy, Joseph, Christopher, my heart is with you.
All my love,
Marguerite

I was 17 years old when I met him, so he's always been "Mr. Vellanti" to me. My parents divorced when I was 8, so when I was 'brought into the family" as best friend of his son, Joseph, he was lilke a 2nd father to me. I tell people I'm a "born again Italian" because of the the great influence Mr. Vellanti and his fantastic family had on me.

My prayers and condolences to the family at this sad time in their lives. CDR Vellanti was in my Coast Guard Reserve unit in the mid 1970's and he was a great officer and a great CO. He treated everyone with respect and he had a great sense of humor and we had laughter in our unit. Equally as important he took a number of us to the old Picciolo's restaurant on Miami Beach for lunch because they had great Italian food. I have a photo memoriam to him online and if you Google his name it should appear in the search results.

Godspeed CDR Vellanti!

Velia, Chris, Mia, Thomas, and Joey -I am so sorry for your loss. Tom was a great man and loved by so many. I know God is walking beside you as you go through this difficult time and although the path isn't an easy one, you all have been given the courage, faith, and optimism to keep going on in the fashion that would make Tom proud. You and your families are in everyone's prayers and I know that the Lord has you close to his heart, as you are surrounded by the wishes and prayers of all those that care about you so much.

May your grief be lightened by the wonderful memories you have. In the years I've known Tom, he has always made me smile. In time your sadness will turn into comfort as you remember him.

My sincere sympathy in the loss of a great man. I will never forget Tom. He and I were into boat racing and in 1953 Tom asked me to go to the National Stock Outboard Championships races in Syracuse, N.Y. We stayed in the family home in Bayshore. To everyone's suprise I won. That was the first of six National Championships. I'm convinced that Tom was a big part of my successful boat racing career.

Celebrating a life well lived. We especially appreciate and remember your assistance during Hurricane Andrew and how we all survived in your home in Homestead, while you were driving in the storm to get to your mobile home park in order to help your friends and residents there.
Another special memory is being at the hospital together to share with Chris and Stephanie the birth of our grandson, Nicholas. I remember you said that he would be a big guy since his hands were so big at birth. You were right. We will have the memories forever.
How like you now to go on ahead and prepare places for your family. Watch over them well until you are all together again.

The tribute to Tom in the Herald captures the essence of this fine man’s spirit.

I still remember all the joyfull laughs when we first met for brunch in Key West with Judy and Stephanie, Tom, Velia and Chris. We have shared the height of joy together and then our private tears later.

I so enjoyed your family and am very sad for this loss. I know Tom will never leave you however and your lives will go on with beautiful memories of him, the lessons he taught all of you as husband and father and of course love never dies…His love defies death and lives on forever in those he touched. Great people never leave us as they are with us in every action we take.

I think of your family often every time I visit out youngest son Grant who lives on Belle Meade Island. The Vellanti home is still the most beautiful on the island and I love the history….the Contessa and her handsome husband, the great escape, brothers overboard, the gifts of gold that enabled your families success in America along with a great deal of hard work, the building of neighborhoods in New York, Hialeah, Leisure City and much more. I know Tom’s sons will carry on this noble heritage along with their sons just as it has been in the past.
