June 20, 2008

Growing up, if my brothers and I weren't with my parents, we were with our grandparents; their home has always been our home. Memories of those times flash through my head: cold, sweet watermelon on a hot summer day; lazy Sunday afternoon naps on that fuzzy brown couch; grandpa fixing my covers after I kicked them off in my sleep; bologna sandwiches with fritos after school; Little Debbie snacks always in abundance; listening to him whisper the names of his children and grandchildren as he laid in bed praying for them at night.

Throughout his whole life my grandpa loved and served God, his family, his friends, his neighbor, and his country. He was a humble man who loved wholeheartedly. He may not have always expressed his love with eloquent words, but he displayed his love through the work of his hands. And he allowed God to use him to touch people's lives. He carried out the commandment that Jesus gave Simon Peter in John 21:15-17:
When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?”
“Yes Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him a third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”

My grandpa fed the hungry, gave water to the thirsty, clothed the unclothed; he took people groceries, gave children candy, mowed neighbors' lawns. He constantly gave out of his own need. He lived with a purpose, fulfilling his calling. He spent his life “storing up treasures in heaven” because his life was not his own; his life was hidden in Christ.

There is a poem by George Herbert, a 17th century poet and parson, that reminds me of my grandpa. It's entitled Colossians 3:3, a verse which states Our life is hid with Christ in God.

My words and thoughts do both express this notion,
That Life hath with the sun a double motion.
The first Is straight, and our [daily] friend,
The other Hid, and doth obliquely bend.
One life is wrapt In flesh, and tends to earth.
The other winds towards Him, whose happy birth
Taught me to live here so, That still one eye
Should aim and shoot at that which Is on high:
Quitting with daily labor all My pleasure,
To gain at harvest an eternal Treasure.
[My Life Is Hid In Him, That Is My Treasure]

As Herbert describes in this poem, my grandpa had two lives: a physical one here on earth that we all experienced and enjoyed; and a spiritual one, that was cultivated as he loved and served others.

So as we grieve and bid farewell, let us also rejoice and take comfort, because at this very moment Mariano Miranda is experiencing that which he never fully experienced here in this world: He is basking in the glory of God. He is savoring his Father's delight. He is overwhelmed, and probably a bit embarrassed, with the abundance of his treasures. And we, as part of his living inheritance, must carry on his legacy. We must love our neighbors as ourselves and give them that which they lack, knowing that when we meet Grandpa in heaven again he will be bursting with pride on our behalves.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone.
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Mae,tears and grief are from God because of the joys and memories we had with our loved ones.
Mother Teresa liked to say;
'What have I done to God.'My brother knew that when we sin it is also unto God, so I thank him for his example of humility and love.
'What have I done for God'
We will never know on this side those he blessed with his right hand and his left and us never knew. A servant of God
'What have I done with God.'
The question is not if we know God, but does He know us. Jesus said 'you will know them by their fruits'.God knew Marion.
'What have I done inspite of God.'
Marions love for Jesus and his gratitude for His sacrifice was by deed and word. May we follow his example.
Thank you father for my brother. Hold him tight till we arrive.
Proverbs 11:30 The FRUIT of the RIGHTEOUS is LIFE, and HE who WINS SOULS IS WISE.
Psalms 17:11 The LAW of the Lord (10 Commandments) is PERFECT CONVERTING the SOUL.
Thank you father for a brother who was wise, who not only heard your LAW but perservired untill the end. TO God be the Glory, Amen

Dear Aunt Mae, We are saddened by Marions death, but rejoice in knowing he is in Heaven. I have so many wonderful memories of the Summers spend in Diboll thanks to you and Marion. Eating watermelons and playing by the creek and the "woods",trying to ride that old mule I will always remember. Marion got me a summer job at Knapp Chevrolet one Summer and I liked to died in that old warehouse from the heat - but he make sure I drank lots of Cokes! Your trips to Monterrey, Mexico afer the War to visit "El Tio" and the pictures of everyone in "Sombreros" and "Charro" is a real treasure - the memories go on and on and he will be sourly missed.God bless you and your family. Love Emilio

Aunt Mae and Family,
It's at these very moments when we have to realize what a privelidge it is to be a Miranda. All that have gone before us have been truly remarkable people and Uncle Minky was no exception. I will always have fond memories of him: every visit to Diboll, we could count on the mexican bread from Fiesta - the sodas he had stocked in the cooler in the trunk of his car - the fishing trips to Lake Livingston (of course, Mark, Sherrie and I would spend most of our time either in the picnic basket or at the marina buying snacks, compliments of Uncle Minkey!)- the trips to Fastrill - Aunt Mae amazed at how loud the t.v. could actually be, and I could go on forever... Most of all, I remember a true champion for our family. He has left a piece of himself within each generation of our family, and I will always strive to be the kind of person that our patriarchs would want us to be. May the Lord grant you peace during this time and for all of us as well.

Uncle Minkey - I'm saddened that I cant be there to pay tribute to your life with the rest of the family, but please know that until we meet again, I love you.

Aunt Mae & Family:

We are saddened to hear about the passing of our favorite “Uncle Minky”. Although we will all dearly miss him here on earth, we know he is now in a better place with our Lord and Savior. He was a bright ray of sunshine in our lives, always with a great deal of humor, no matter what the circumstance, and we so very much enjoyed his visits to Diboll; there are so many wonderful memories. One special memory is that he was instrumental in our getting acquainted and playing cupid during the summer of 1959. He was always so very generous in providing assistance to his sister Rosa, (my mom), and our family all during the year, not just at Christmas and special holidays. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and may God grant you peace at this time.

With our love and prayers, Louis and Fran Rodriguez
