MURL HUFFMAN Obituary

HUFFMAN, Murl Age 100, of Centerville, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2020. From 1919 to 2020, Murl lived through 18 Presidents, three major wars, and three pandemics. Born in Peru, Indiana, he worked after school during the depression to help support his family. He attended Manchester University and in 1941 married Charlotte Olinger of Trotwood, a wonderful marriage that lasted until her passing in 1999. In 2011 he married Marjorie Bogan of Dayton. Murl is also survived by three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, who now miss him tremendously. As a West Carrollton High School civics and government teacher, he taught over 12,000 students from 1945 to 2008. He took mentorship from Charles Kettering and Andrew Cordier, who considered him a friend. His students have spread their achievements across the City of Dayton, the state and the nation. Perhaps most notable was his desire to stay in touch with many of his former students over the years, and their desire to keep in touch with him, even after his retirement at age 88. He founded the high school golf team, took several teams to State, perfected a decent game himself, was a SWBL Coach's Trophy winner, and is a member of the Hall of Fame. In 1968 he was elected the first President of the 80,000 member Ohio Education Association. Manchester University honored his unique and innovative teaching philosophy and methods. As caddy master at Moraine Country Club in the 50's and 60's, he helped to support and grow the Evans Scholar program. Due to continuing COVID precautions, there will be no calling hours, and private graveside services will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Sanner Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and other staff at Kettering Medical Center and at Ohio's Hospice of Dayton for their kindness and the exceptional care they provided. Memorial contributions may be made to The Dayton Foundation, for "The Murl Huffman Scholarship for West Carrollton High School."

I wish I had cared more and had been into his class when I was taking it. He was a funny guy and he had a lot of knowledge to offer. He had all kinds of funny things he said. I remember him saying this to a student who didn´t bring his homework to class: "You got a PacMan dog, huh? I´m kidding, I´m kidding." There were more witticisms he said, but I can´t remember them.

Looking back all those years ago It was an absolute honor and a privilege to have Mr. Huffman as a teacher. He was extremely dedicated to the school and all of the students. In my opinion he was one of the best Civics teachers to ever stand in front of a classroom. I’m glad I got to see him again at our 50th reunion.

My fondest memories of Murl are trips with The Social Science Club and appearances on his weekly TV show, "Headline Hunt." I don't know how many years it was on the air, but I was a member of the WCHS team, along with Jim Blasingame, Joanna Clouse, Jerry Coon, and Judy Randall. Jim was the leader of the group and dutifully brought us together to create and rehearse secret signals that served as short cuts so we could come out on top against teams from other high schools. What a fun-filled, exciting way to introduce teenagers to the world of public television!

I shall always treasure my memories of Murl from attending his classes at WCHS. I was fortunate to travel with him and the Junior Council on World Affairs twice to Washington, D.C. and New York City. This instilled in me the love of travel and learning about other cultures throughout the world.

I was a student of Murl's in 1973 and still remember his presence in the classroom. I have even more vivid memories of him as our golf coach. That wonderful laugh at the end of our round was a reward in and of itself. The look on his face when the team won the SWBL tournament was truly a joy to behold. A truly good person willing to say the right thing when it needed to be said. He will be missed by all who knew him. My thoughts go out to his family.

You would not know me, but I came to know
Mr Huffman through my father, John Newberg. My father taught advanced math classes at West Carrollton High School while Mr Huffman taught civics. I went to Miamisburg High School, but came know a variety of West Carrollton teachers via my father. So much for background. I always thought of him as a vibrant and fun person. I know my father had much respect for him. Please accept deep sympathy from me and in behalf of my late father. i think it is impressive when someone makes such a positive impression on me nearly

seven decades ago that the above words come so naturally.
Peace, Earl Newberg

Mr. Huffman was an integral part of my learning and enjoying the game of golf. He taught me how to caddie and learn the etiquette of the game along with getting a lot of exercise and make a little money. I still enjoy the game and have fond memories of the days at the caddie shack. I will honor Mr. Murl Huffman everytime I play a round of golf by playing the game with the respect that he taught all us . I send my my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Murl Huffman!

What a wonderful man Murl was. My mom was a student if his, and they maintained a friendship over decades, as he did with so many of his students. I always found that remarkable, and a testament to his caring about his students as people. I recall as a kid that when he would visit, we would have fascinating conversations about current events, and he would always want to know my and my brother’s opinion no matter how ill informed we were. He forced you to think, encouraged you to ask tough questions, and inspired you to be engaged with the world. I’m sorry to see him go but grateful to have known him.

Mr. Huffman was always a favorite teacher and an inspiration. As adviser to the Social Science Club, (the Junior Council on World Affairs), he opened doors to the world for me. When I was ill two years ago, he telephoned with hope and encouragement. It isn't every day a 74 year old former student receives a supportive call from her 99 year old teacher! He was one of a kind; I admire and appreciate him so much. His family have my deepest sympathy.

What an intelligent and thoughtful man, whose memory will be cherished by many. The fact that I grew up knowing Murl simply because he had taught my mother in high school and continued to keep up with her and her family for her entire adult life speaks volumes about the care he felt for his students and for people in general. I feel blessed to have known him.
