Milton Woodside Obituary

WOODSIDE, Jr., Milton Henry "Woody"

Milton Henry "Woody" Woodside, Jr., 76, of Brunswick, Georgia, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2024, at Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, surrounded by his family. Born on May 27, 1947, in Durham, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Milton and Nan Woodside.

Woody grew up in Clinton, North Carolina, and was the oldest with three sisters and a brother. He was a proud alumnus of Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia, and The Citadel - the Military College of South Carolina (class of 1970), where he served as a Summerall Guard.

Before making his home in Brunswick and the Golden Isles in 1973, Woody lived in Washington, D.C., serving on former U.S. Congressman Ronald "Bo" Ginn's staff, and later with U.S. Representative, Lindsay Thomas, in Georgia. Woody accepted the position of President of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, in 1985, where he proudly served the Glynn County community and the state of Georgia for 34 years until his retirement in May 2019.

The list of community projects with Woody's fingerprints on them is long, The Sidney Lanier Bridge, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the Brunswick harbor deepening, the Southeast Georgia Health System, the College of Coastal Georgia, the Jekyll Island Foundation, Rotary Club, the Leadership Glynn Program (impacting future community leaders), and Glynn County's strong tourism industry are among the projects he held dear.

A retired military officer, Woody served honorably 26 years in the U.S. Army and the Georgia Army National Guard. His commitment to community and service was profound and unwavering.

Woody's list of accomplishments, awards and board memberships was extensive, yet he remained modest, preferring to highlight others and not himself or his own achievements. Despite that modesty, Woody was deeply honored to be recognized by the community he loved. Recognition from the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce, Glynn County Bar Association, National Guard Association of the U.S., Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives, the local council of Boy Scouts of America, Georgia Trend magazine's repeated recognition as a "Notable Georgian," and the recipient of the Alfred W. Jones award among others, were all near to his heart. Perhaps the late U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson's words summed Woody up best, during a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate: "A great friend, someone who is always there."

Despite his career and accolades, Woody's true joy was the love and laughter he shared with his family. His wife, Ellen, his children, Mary Gould and Jay, his grandchildren, and his extended family were the most important.

Woody was preceded in death by his son, Milton Henry Woodside, III, "Jay"; his parents; and his sisters, Helen Woodside DuBose and Anna Woodside Morisey. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Gould Woodside; his daughter, Mary Gould Woodside Moorhead and her husband, James, of Lake Forest, Illinois; his brother, Joseph Redmond Woodside of Knoxville, Tennessee; his sister, Jeanne Woodside Honeycutt of Barnstable, Massachusetts; sisters-in-law, Sydney Woodside and Gayle Gould; brothers-in-law, Charles DuBose and Gary Gould; numerous special nieces and nephew; and his cherished grandchildren, James Woodside "Woods" and Mary Bremer Moorhead, who affectionately called him "BigWoo."

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shepard Center in Atlanta, Georgia, or the charity of your choice.

In remembrance of Woody, engage with someone new today or take a few extra minutes to offer a firm handshake and a meaningful conversation.

Woody Woodside is an icon for the Golden Isles community he served so well. Woody and Bob Hurt were key to helping Rep "Bo" Ginn bring the Federal Law Enforcement Center headquarters to Brunswick in 1974-75. I remember him well during his long service as the Chamber of Commerce´s Executive Director . He, Bob Hurt, Frank Norton and Wil Edington were leaders, with others, in making FLETC´s move and development a real American law enforcement training operation success story. Woody never lost his zest for working on any and all ways to improve the life and businesses in the southeast corner of Georgia. I will miss his guidance and, among other things the Annual Congressional visit he engineered for Chamber Members and allies. On the wall of the Palm Restaurant where the Chamber travelers would meet after a long day on the Hill, Woody has his own place of honor celebrity sketch in a gallery along with many other famous people.
My prayers are for Woody and his family.

So hard to lose such an influential person who was like my older brother. Woody always made sure the Ginn kids did our homework and assisted this poor math student when necessary! He told it like it was - in a kind, firm manner and followed with a joke. It was always a treat to see him when we visited the coast. Thank you, Ellen and Mary Gould, for sharing him with the citizens of our state. I appreciate the forever imprint he has had on my life. With love.

Dearest Woodside Family:

I was a proud classmate of Woody´s at The Citadel, and like like all those that knew him, he made an impact on my life! Even in the many years since our graduation, each time I would see him, he would share words of encourage and he genuinely made you feel like he was glad to see you!

His subtle leadership qualities were endearing and awe-inspiring....he always stood out as a leader in any group due to his passion, full engagement, his ability to listen and his infectious positive attitude and humor. Woody made the world a better place and he will be sorely missed.

God bless Woody´s family and may that precious soul Rest in Peace. He is gone but NEVER forgotten.

I met Woody at a makeup Brunswick Rotary meeting in 1980s. We became friends and laughed at how crazy politics can be. Pam and I always enjoyed visiting with Woody and Ellen when down at the Lambrights for Georgia-Florida weekend. He was always fun to be with at later visits and was always willing to help with any problems we ever had. Woody hired our daughter Heather to work at the Chamber and she learned so much from him as a mentor. Pam and I are praying for and thinking of Ellen all the family at this time of their great loss.

Woody Woodside was one of a kind. He was among the first people I met when I came to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) 41 years ago. And he remained a good friend for all these years. He was a valued member of Congressman Bo Ginn and later Lindsay Thomas´ staff and was heavily involved in the transfer of FLETC from Washington DC to the deactivated Glynco Naval Air Station near Brunswick.
During his career as a Congressional staff member and later as President of the Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce he made significant contributions to the well being and growth of this community.

His passing is a great loss to our community and he will be missed by many.
May God rest his soul and bring peace to his grieving family.

I met Woody when he first came to Brunswick in 1985 when I was on the Chamber Board and involved with the membership drive. We had a lot in common as we both had recently come from Atlanta and he knew a lot of the same people I did. As time went on and my involvement with the Chamber was reduced due to family and business obligations, Woody remained such a good friend and was always ready to sit down and catch up. You felt as if you were the only person in the room or restaurant. That´s a real gift for someone who knew so many people. He was very supportive of my St. Simons book using it as a presentation to speakers and guests of the Chamber. Just last year I asked him to give a reference for someone close to me and he did it with no hesitation and let me know immediately the result of his recommendation. He was one of a kind and I will miss him as a good friend and good ambassador to Glynn County. If heaven has a Chamber of Commerce, I know who the new director will be.

What a massive loss to the many of us who knew and loved Woody.

Our community has suffered a huge loss of an incredible man.

2014, when I first moved here, we met and were part of the Seafood Nutrition Partnership.

Together we endorsed the health benefits of seafood. Woody stood out to me instantly.

My respect and fondness of him, what he did for the community, and the impact he had on me and all who new him was beyond words.

To his family and loved ones I extend my sympathy to you. The memories will never go away if this incredible man

My parents Hugh and Ernestine Langford were good friends with Woody. I ran into him not to long ago at First Friday and told him who I was, and he told me he worked with my parents on the Bo Ginn campaign. He also told me how much he loved and respected them, I will never forget his kindness. My love and prayers go out to the Woodside family

Col. Frank Norton, Bob Hurt and I visitied Woody in the Mojave Desert when his National Guard unit was in preparation for deployment for the Persian Gulf. We saw Woody as the soldier that he had committed over 25 years of his life to being. He was covered with desert dust, but he was there fully engaged with the men under his command. Amazing to see this kind of dedication along with everything else that he did for his community, his state, and his country.

When Woody was born the mold broke. My sincerest sympathies on a quality human being who left this world a much better place because he was sincere and he was genuine. May all of your tears turn into smiles as soon as possible.

Some people touch our hearts and we are forever blessed. How blessed the Ginn family was to have Woody in our lives. Woody was like a big brother to me back in the day when he lived with our family during dad's first campaign. I will always remember Woody 'tutoring' me in Algebra! After all these years, I will miss just knowing he is a text away. Truly, it is hardest to lose someone who really showed us how to live. Long will his legacy live on.
