Homer Rice Obituary

When considering Homer Rice's legacy at Georgia Tech, there's a little something for everyone, for both the hardened pragmatist and dreamy idealist. Because Rice, who died Monday at the age of 97, so naturally worked both sides of that street.

He was part program-builder, arriving at Tech in 1980 and sparking a sporting renaissance on The Flats during his 17 years as athletic director. Where before him there was a football team that teetered on irrelevance and signs of dry rot throughout the athletic department, there followed one of the golden periods of Tech athletics. Highlighting Rice's reign was a football national championship, a men's basketball Final Four appearance – both in 1990 – and six different programs enjoying at least some time atop the national rankings.

And part person-builder, who dared step beyond the often cynical, win-today realm of college athletics and advocate for a player's long-term well-being beyond the field. His "Total Person" program, which stressed life skills, career planning and self-improvement, was the model for a similar course later launched by the NCAA.

Make no mistake, Rice served the bottom line of winning. "When he took that job in '80, Georgia Tech was probably as low as it has ever been and will never be again, whether it was facilities or funding," said Bernadette McGlade, one of Rice's initial hires at Tech as its women's basketball coach, now the commissioner of the Atlantic 10 Conference. "He literally reinvented and rebuilt an entire academic institution's athletic program."

As Rice put it succinctly in early 2023: "We were able to put some money together and some wins together and one by one, we moved it forward and gained a lot of success."

But he also reached deeper into the athlete, past the fast-twitch fiber to the mind and spirit, to where the ever-fading ideal of college athletics lives.

"His most important legacy is in the education and self-esteem the student-athletes earned by going through his program," said Bill Curry, the football coach hired just before Rice's arrival who spent the 1980-86 seasons there before leaving for Alabama. "If you took the Total Person program it affected everything else in your life and made a difference in your life. I think that's Homer's gift."

Our family had the honor of knowing Dr. Rice and his wonderful family for many years. Our father grew up with Homer, having attended Ft. Thomas High School and competing in sports and academics with him. His career at GA Tech was impressive as were the milestones along his career path that got him to Atlanta. But all along he always had quality time with the family. He was a first class gentleman, a legend and a leader who will be missed by so many. Rest in peace Dr. Rice.

Dear Karen and the entire Rice family, I am so honored to have known such a first-class man as Homer! He meant a lot to me and my parents over the years and we were so excited that he moved to Atlanta and could turn Tech Athletics around. But his legacy with building up athletes and helping them to realize their full potential outside of sports, is probably his most prized accomplishment. What a blessed long life he had and our whole family is thankful to have been a part of Homer´s life! Rest In Peace Homer!

Honestly, perhaps no other man in my life set a better and more enduring example of how to live one's life. A leader's leader, my Uncle Homer personified quiet confidence steeped in deep Christian conviction (Phyllis was my mother Angel's sister). He honored others by a faith which allowed him to see them as God's children. He not only encouraged us to be our best, he modeled and taught it. Exercise, good nutrition, erudition, and spiritual habits were his lessons to me. And service...I'll never forget him telling me when a tennis ball went out over the fence "Eric, the best sportsman is always the one who goes and gets the stray balls, not the winner in points." Homer knew what winning really meant, and that's why success followed him. I will remember him always.

I am from Ft. Thomas Kentucky and Coach Rice was a living legend in Ft. Thomas in the late 50s, early 60s. His wife, and my mother taught kindergarten together. I had broken my thumb playing Junior League Baseball when I was 10 or 11 and upset I would be out for a while. Coach Rice took me aside and showed me his crooked thumb he injured at Centre College and told me I would be alright. I will never forget that a living legend from Ft. Thomas took the time to console me. I remember it like it was yesterday. Nancy, Hope to see you at the Reunion this summer. Thinking of you, your sisters, and the rest of the Family.
