Sue Dietrich Obituary

Sue Eleanor Brown Dietrich Sue Eleanor Brown Dietrich, 90, of Tallahassee, died on Saturday, February 2, 2008. A service will be held for her at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday, February 6, at Bevis Funeral Home, with burial at Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 t o 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, at the funeral home, and again after the burial at the home of Fred and Pat Dietrich, 1309 Piedmont, in Tallahassee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the LeMoyne Art Foundation, 1125 N. Gadsden, Tallahassee, FL 32301. Sue Eleanor Brown Dietrich was born 90 years ago, on September 11, 1917, in Starkville, Miss., to Dr. And Mrs. Harry Bates Brown. The family later moved to Baton Rouge where her father taught at LSU and where she grew up. She graduated from LSU with a master's degree in art and her thesis consisted of a large fresco mural on the wall of a classroom building. Several years ago, this mural was restored and she was invited to come to the unveiling, a great honor and a highlight of her life, recognizing her significant artistic talent. In 1940, she married Tommy (T. Stanton) Dietrich a sociology doctoral student. When he was drafted to serve in World War II, and they moved to Arlington, Va., and she took part time jobs she could do at home, doing drawings of ferns and also maps for the Smithsonian. After the war was over, Tommy finished his Ph.D. in sociology and obtained a faculty position at FSU in 1948. The family moved to Tallahassee then, and has remained here every since. When they moved to Tallahassee, they had two children; soon they found their dream home and proceeded to have four more children. In the early 60's she went back to FSU to get her teaching certificate renewed. She took art classes in pottery and became a wonderful potter, producing a large series of works, many related to her love of gardening and flower arranging. As the family children grew up, she had more time to devote to her talents and interests. She continued with her pottery, and became a gardener of chrysanthemums, for which she was very well known. She was extremely generous with her "mums," giving them to friends and associates. It also gave her more time to spend with her grandchildren, who were so important to her - Theresa, daughter of Eleanor; Tenley and Matt, daughter and son of Fred; Drew and Kurt, sons of Bruce; and Ann, Sarah Marie and Nick, daughters and son of Mark. All of these interests continued throughout her life. She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor Dietrich of Tallahassee; four sons, Fred Dietrich (wife Pat), Bruce Dietrich (wife Karen), Mark Dietrich (wife Margot Palazesi), and Don Dietrich, all of Tallahassee; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Stanton (Tommy) Dietrich; and son, Stanton Dietrich.

Mark and Margo, you and your family were so wonderful with your Mom these past years. I loved watching her at Halloween giving out candy to the kids, while rocking in her chair. She had such joy being around your children. Know that she is now watching over all of you and keeping you safe.

Eleanor, I am so sorry to learn of your mother's death. She was such a giving person - her time, her knowledge, her talent - what fun I had at the floral classes she taught for University Club members in her work room, with so many beautiful, award-winning flowers just outside. You are blessed to have such a wonderful mother. Hold close those memories. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
