Mary O'Dougherty Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Mar. 2, 2009.
O'Dougherty, Mary Ann Mary Ann O'Dougherty was born on Halloween, October 31, 1953, and grew up in South Minneapolis. She spent her early years developing her skills as a singer and musician, taking piano lessons as a child and performing in high school musicals and talent shows. She attended Regina High School and earned a BA in Music Education at the University of Minnesota. After graduating from the U in 1975, Mary Ann's passion and drive for life launched her global travels to more than 30 countries, where she studied languages and performed. After spending time in the Middle East, Europe, and South America, she settled in Brazil for five years. There her love of food and singing intersected in a jazz nightclub she owned called Mandala. In the mid-1980s she returned to the Twin Cities, and while working in local fine restaurants joined "The Consort", one of the first bands to bring "world music" to the Twin Cities. Mary Ann's band, "Mandala", highlighted her roots in Brazilian music and native-like fluency in Portuguese, her beautiful alto voice and incredible stage presence that captured the hearts of thousands. From in the mid-1980s onward Mary Ann used her true gift of teaching that combined her love of singing, culture, art and music. She created an artist-in-residence curriculum that was offered in local and statewide elementary schools. In 1991 she started teaching music for the St. Paul Public Schools, first at Cherokee Heights Elementary and later at Eastern Heights Elementary. She completed a Masters Degree at the University of Minnesota. Mary Ann began teaching at the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis in 2005. Mary Ann and her husband Steven Alm met in 1990 and were married in 1993. They were the very best of friends and spent time traveling, camping and sailing together. Mary Ann had a rare capacity to connect deeply with people. All who knew her will remember her open, genuine, buoyant spirit, intensity and infectious vitality. She loved to hear everyone's stories and tell her own. She was an avid chef and talented party giver, was passionate about her close friendships and loved her family dearly. Mary Ann was an ardent supporter of social justice and put her values into everyday practice. As singer/performer, teacher, colleague, friend, "tia" (aunt) and family member, she touched the lives of many, many people in a profound way. Mary Ann O'Dougherty, of Minneapolis, passed away on February 25, 2009. Preceded in death by her father, James Aquinas O'Dougherty. Survived by husband, Steven Alm; mother, Patricia O'Dougherty Kast; aunts, Donna Rajkowski, Eileen O'Dougherty; siblings, Patrick, Michael (Nelly), Margaret Wright (Frank), Maureen (Michel Ravaz); nieces and nephews, Sean, Megan, Stefan, LemLem, Mihretu, Hannah, Sam, Josh, Elli, Lexi, and Griffin; and many cousins. Was looking to see if she had any other CD's out beside the one I was aware of and was surprised and disappointed to learn of her death. I enjoyed watching her perform and still enjoy my Mandala CD as one of my favorites.

I watched Annie (the original) with my 4 year old last night and she was amazed that I knew the words to all of the songs. It really got me thinking about all of the music we covered with you during middle school. I don't know anyone else who knows every word to Johnny B Good, Yellow Submarine, Blue Suede Shoes or the theme to Flashdance because they learned it in middle school. We were so lucky to have you and I am so thankful that I can share all of this music with my children now.

Mrs. O'Dougherty, I smile as I read all of these memorable moments posted by those who were blessed to have known you. You have had a profound impact on us all and I hope you are being rewarded tremendously in heaven.

Mrs. O'Dougherty was my 5th grade music teacher at Cherokee Heights Elementary. I remember her infectious smile, her wonderful personality, her love of teaching, the fact that her birthday was on Halloween and that she loved loved loved trolls! I still sing a couple songs that she taught us back then "Don't Fence Me In" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" ...
It saddens me that she is gone.

I will always remember Mrs. O'Dougherty.

I only learned of Mary Ann's passing today...many years later, but just as sadly. Mary Ann and I attended Regina High School together, but our addiional bond was that we shared the same birthdate. We also shared many of the same classes and because of that gift, I was able to enjoy her smarts, her smile, her rebelliousness and her popularity. Our freshman "world studies" teacher gave her the name of "ODO" (O-dough) and it "stuck" with her friends. I may be wrong, but I believe she was even shorter (by a 1/4 inch or so) than I was then. I had no doubt, however, that her personality was MUCH larger, richer and remarkable.
I am so very sad to learn that she is no longer sharing her beauty and brilliance with us.

Mrs. O'Dougherty - best music teacher EVER! There are a few songs that I still hear today, and I can just picture her vibrant, happy, cheerful-self! I will never forget her naughty trolls that snuck out every night and did naughty things throughout the school including, emptying all of the water out of the pool! She was a wonderful great person. I'm sure her family is not the least-bit surprised to see how loved she was by SO many people. She has left, with me, so many fun filled memories from music class. Rest peacefully Mrs. O!

Ms. O'Dougherty was my Music teacher at Cherokee. . From fifth grade up until sixth grade. She inspired me to go into music, and to pursue something in art. It's because of her that I appreciated music more. . I thought about her everyday since the day I helped her pack her Trolls on the last day of school. As I write this I'm doing my best not to cry- She really was a great impact on my life. I really miss her. .

Today, I had a passing thought--"Wonder whatever happened to MA at the Malt Shop?"--and was so saddened to find news of her death. MA, you were so full of life and beauty, vivid in every possible way, and unforgettable more than 30 years later. You were one of several Malt Shoppers who opened my eyes to a bigger, more mysterious world, although I was too young to appreciate your impact at the time. I'll always remember your sweet and soulful renditions of "One Less Bell to Answer" and "Here, There, and Everywhere." Rene, please accept my condolences on the loss of your sister.

Even though it’s been almost two months, there’s a big part of me that still can’t believe this tragedy happened. Mary Ann was such a sweet, sassy, and passionate woman who lived life in a way that is inspirational. I remember her singing with joy at an IPR showcase, talking about her travels and of joining Steve on the road, and discussing the importance of voting, especially in light of the women’s suffrage movement. She loved sharing her knowledge and experiences with others and for that reason, among many others, she was a beloved teacher. The influence she has had on others and the mark she has left on this world will continue to live on. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Mary Ann’s family, friends and everyone else who loved her and whose lives she enriched.

Our hearts are torn. MA was a great classmate & Regina sister. At school as with the rest of her life she was creative, fun loving & beautiful. Many thoughts & prayers to her family, friends & other Regina sister who loved her. Peace with past memories. Love.

March 14, 2009

I did not know Mary Ann but feel as though I do. As I live in the area I was a passerby that horrible night and have kept her and her family in my thoughts and prayers. I knew nothing of her but could feel her amazing spirit. As a teacher myself and after seeing all of the wonderful memories her students and friends remember, I can only strive to be half as inspiring as she was. Know that she has affected even strangers with her life!
You will continue to be in my prayers.

Steve,
My heart goes out to you and Mary Ann's family and close friends. When you spoke of her, there was always a special glimmer in your eyes that showed me how much she meant to you. You had a love that not too many people will ever experience in their lifetime. She will always be your Wife, Soul Mate and Best Friend, that will never change and your memories of her will get you through each day with a smile on your face for having had her in your life. May the love you shared help lighten your heavy heart and friends and family embrace you and help you get through each day. I will honor her through a contribution to WhiteEarth Reservation in her name.

Love and Peace be with you Steve.

To the family and friends. My deepest regrets and sympathy to you from Maastricht, the Netherlands. Through Mame Osteen I met Mary Ann, and there began my appreciation for who she was as an individual and a talent. Her passion and intensity informed her life and her music; her warmth was as broad and deep as her hospitality. My own dear husband, Martijn, recently past away. I can only hope he was there to greet Mary Ann and that they are partying the style for which she is known.

My heart hurts since learning that you have lost a dear daughter whose dazzling talent and kindness impressed everyone who met her. She is singing with angels now, and the melodies she shared on earth will go on in the memories and dreams of the many students, colleagues and friends who loved her so much.
My prayers are for you, dear friend, that God's love will bring healing to your pain.

Mary Ann died about the same time of year that Buddy Holly died. Mary Ann adored Buddy Holly. I also think that Mary Ann sang at the Apollo theater in Harlem when she visited New York. Amateur night at the Apollo is Wednesday night. I was a huge admirer of my sister, Mary Ann.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to have had Mary Ann in my life even if it was such a small fraction if one were to measure in increments of time. I however believe that the quality of Mary Ann's spirit is a huge gift that I will carry with me forever. She is a true treasure and I can't even begin to express just what she means to me. She taught me so much and I am amazed at the depth we connected. We are kindred spirits always and I will miss the opportunity to share future encounters, laughs, smiles. I will miss seeing the twinkle in her eye but my mind I will always cherish the memory.

Everyone who worked with Mary Ann at Cherokee Heights School is very sorry to hear the loss of Mary Ann. I remember going into her class where all the trolls were lined up. She told the children delightful stories and taught them so much history. She would then teach them them the songs related to the history or era they were studying. She was a beautiful person and wonderful teacher. She will be missed and blessings to her family.

Mrs. O'Dougherty was my music teacher at Cherokee Heights Elementary in 1997. What I remember most about her was her love for music, her captivating stories and her troll collections. Mary Ann--Mariana as I always called her--blew into my life like a tropical wind about the time she returned from Recife, Brasil in 1984. Eve MacLeish and I had just begin our Latin music show, Con Canto, Con Ritmo on KFAI (then headquartered in the attic of the Walker Church). Within 2 years KFAI had moved to the second floor of then then-Butler Drugstore on Bloomington and Lake; and Mariana had become an inextricable part of our lives. She appeared on our show; we went to as many of her gigs as we could; and we had the pleasure of her laugh, her extraordinary voice and her infectious joie de vivre at countless parties and get-togethers, most of them centered around food and music. I can honestly say that I learned most of what I know about Brazilian music from her. Mariana, a born teacher even while performing, always delivered little jewels of information about the music she loved so much. She sang at Eve's wedding in 1988 and at mine in 1992, giving the most gorgeous, dramatic rendition of Te Quiero (I Love You) that I have ever heard, as a gift to us. On March 3, 2009, Eve and I devoted our entire show Corazon Latino (KFAI, Tuesdays from 1-3) to her and her music. The show will be online in the KFAI archives for 2 weeks. It is almost inconceivable that someone as luminous and vibrant as Mary Ann could suddenly disappear from our lives. Steve and all of her family: my heart goes out to you. All I can say is that we were lucky to have had her among us for the last 55 years. But that does not lessen the sorrow at her passing. My deepest sympathy.

To all who knew and loved Mary Ann, especially her family, friends, and students — my most sincere sympathies for your loss.

Mary Ann O’Dougherty was such a spitfire spirit—she used to tell me stories of summer sleepovers on the sailboat, of the delight she took in her mom’s visits, of her times as a songstress and nightclub owner in Brazil, and of her travels across the world with just her voice and guitar to fund her adventures.

I remember her proudly showing me her new red motor scooter with matching helmet in the case, and telling me how much gas she got to the gallon taking that beautiful River Road between work and home.

Mary Ann had such a zest for life, and I loved her stories. Poet Diane Ackerman once reflected, “I don't want to get to the end of my life and find that I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” In all my days, I don’t believe I’ve ever known anyone who lived the width of her life more completely, or with more music, laughter and style, than Mary Ann O’Dougherty.

Thanks, sweetie. We’ll never forget you.

If I close my eyes, I can hear O'DO's voice in my ear as we stand on the bleachers during a Regina choir concert. She always helped me stay on track and in tune. In fact, her strong alto voice really carried our section.

O'Dougherty and O'Rourke -- seems like we were alphabetically linked throughout grade school and high school. We were both short, Irish and loved to sing. At Regina, way before any of us ever knew what self-esteem, self-confidence and self-love were, Mary Ann lived them. She knew who she was, what she wanted and loved herself in the process.

At 2 p.m. tomorrow, I will join you all as you celebrate O'DO's life by playing the Regina Choir CD and singing my heart out, trying to stay in tune. Please know that I keep all of Mary Ann's family and friends in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Steve and Family,
I worked, laughed, and sang with Mary Ann in her class at Eastern Hts. We became instant friends, both being Irish Catholic school girls and sharing a love of music. Steven
This is really sad news, as we will always remember Mary Ann singing in the Penthouse atop of the Kahler Hotel in Rochester.
As a guest in our home she was adorned by us and my Father-in-law who was visiting us from Germany. And how thrilled we where that she was able to be at our informal wedding and sing a few of our favorite songs at our lake side home in Prior Lake.
As I have always enjoyed the CD of "Mandala" I will close my eyes and see her smiling back at us like she always did in the Penthouse.
Sorry we never had the chance to meet you but know Mary Ann will truly be missed not only by you but by all those who where lucky to meet her and fall in love with her wit and charm.
Our deepest condolence, prays and thoughts our with you.

Mary Ann--One of my favorite memories is the Juerga at Judy's in WB when you and Mandala arrived from a gig at 2 a.m. and proceeded to play for us well into the wee hours. Your velvet voice floated through the hot summer air and took us all on an incredible journey. Your beautiful smile and inimitable spirit will remain in our hearts forever.

Steven,
I know you only from the R22 list so I realize it is presumptuous to think of us as friends. However, I appreciated your words then and am so sorry for your loss.

There are no words of true condolence but I have found some comfort in my own experience in the thought of da Vinci, that as a well spent day brings happy sleep, so life well spent brings happy death.

Your Mary Ann truly achieved a well spent life. Be well.

I was just thinking about her. I always have because of the songs we sung at Cherokee. I remember when she started there. She was a very joyous person. The songs are stuck in my head and always will be. Sounds silly, but but when I am doing nothing, a song will pop into my head from those days, and I actually can still here her voice. I guess until now I never really stopped to think what an impact she had on me. Out of all of my teachers who I have forgotten, she is one who will always be in my mind, my heart, and best of all, my ears. There is a lot I could say about her. But I suppose it is best to say, she was a happy woman, too happy to want us to feel sad. God bless you all.

Over 30 years ago we worked together at the old malt shop on 50th street. I don't recall if she was a waitron, a (soda)jerk or cooking up those delicious soups and salads in the kitchen, but she was a presence at that most magical place. She was a sprite then, so happy and always smiling and laughing, I'll never forget you MA. And now, by the light of the moon the woodland sprites dance and play with you singing into the night .
My heart goes out to the family and those near and dear to her...

many of times we would go to class when she taught at Cherokee Heights Elementary wondering when she was going to let us play with her troll dolls. well i think it was once a month she had a day where me and my peers could come and play with the troll dolls during the specified class times. those were memories of her that i will always remember and will never forget. And another time was my sixth grade year when she had a choir/ play for people who wanted to sing and act. God i remember all those times... God bless her soul and my god give her peace.

My heart is breaking for you and your family. MAO'D as she was fondly known to me will be painfully missed. I feel so lucky to have had her in my life. She enriched me and my family's lives immeasurably. What a loss.

Most sincerely

Steve,
I knew you and Mary Jane back in Mankato, then moved to the cities and met Mary Ann through different musical circles. When the two of you met (without any help from me!)it was what I like to call a 'plesant shock' and I was very happy for both of you. You were good for each other for many years and we've all got a lot of wonderful memories of Mary Ann. She touched a lot of lives and she'll be missed by a lot of people.

Steve and Family,
I'm so glad I got to see Mary Ann at the Dakota a few weeks back. As always, she lit up the place with her joy and enthusiasm, and was proud to have Steve and her mom there at the club that night. She brought so much light to this world and will be sorely missed by all of us who were privileged to know her.

To Mary Ann's family -

I have so many fond and fun memories of Mary Ann from our Regina days. Her energy and her creativity were absolutely infectious. You couldn't help but have great time when O'Do was around!

I am so sorry for your loss. Mary Ann will be deeply missed by many.

Doc, we have been friends forever, never so much as an argument between us. I value you and Maryanne`s friendship. We will walk through this field together. I loved her and I love you.

I was lucky enough to have Ms. O'Dougherty as a music teacher in elementary school at Cherokee Heights. She was a wonderful teacher and had so many incredible experiences to share. She told vivid stories and gave such encouragement to her students. In my future travels when I go to Brazil, I will certainly think of her as that it one of the clearest memories I have of her, sharing stories about a places that she loved. I feel fortunate to have known her, even as a child.
My thoughts go out to her family for their loss.

Steve, I am so sorry about your wife Mary Ann. Although I never had the opportunity to meet her, Travis and Kalin always told of such good times they spent with you and her.
My thoughts are with you.

The Cherokee Heights school community mourns the loss of a dearly beloved teacher. I am most grateful for her gift of music which she shared with hundreds of children. Her "informances" left their mark on many, many families over the years. Through her guitar and her voice we learned about cultures and history and stories and the love of music. Please know that the imprint which she left will live on in the hearts and minds of children and fellow staff.

To all of Mary Ann's family and friends, I profoundly share your grief from afar. May this tragic passing somehow bring us all closer together in our hearts, which I am sure is what she would want.

I am stunned, saddened, and flooded with memories of M.A. When I first met her in the early days at at The Malt Shop, she was all smiles and music and that never changed. Even her speaking voice lilted! Life doesn't make sense sometimes, but hers did. We were all so lucky to know her.
As she named me - StellsBells.

Dear family and friends of Mary Ann,

I'm shocked and deeply saddened by news of Mary's passing.

I'm a fellow instructor at IPR and although never talked with Mary Ann in depth, the few times we did speak, I could tell she was a very passionate, caring person. I know the halls or IPR, not to mention the classrooms, will not be the same without her. I know she touched many hearts and minds with her vast knowledge and experiences.

My thoughts are with you all who knew her so much better than I did.

Peace to you on your new journeys, Mary Ann.

Steve, family and friends - Go outside in late February or early March at about 9pm and find Orion in the southwest sky. Follow the three bright stars that are his belt up and to the right to the first bright star. That star is Aldebaran in the face of Taurus the Bull. The light from that star left there about the same time that Mary Ann was born. I will always think of that star as Mary Ann's star. She still shines.

I had fun working with Mary Ann at Eastern Heights. I never tired of her stories, such as driving from Brazil to the US. She always had a smile on her face.

Dear Steve and family,

Thanks to Mary Ann and Manadala, I developed a great and abiding love of the beautiful music of Brazil. It was such a musical treat to perform with Mary Ann and that band, and I learned so many wonderful songs. She had an incredible energy and ability to connect with an audience. She'd have people doing a dance line through the old Dakota! What great times. Mary Ann was an inspiring musician and educator and always so much fun to be around. What a horrible, tragic loss. But she touched so many lives in so many ways, I am sure she'll never be forgotten. I feel very lucky to have known and worked with her. My deepest sympathy...

I have been a student of Mary Ann's at IPR for the past year and a half. I never saw her without a smile on her face. She was always sincerely happy to see each and every one of her students day after day. I think my favorite memory of her is going to the art museum with her. She will be deeply missed and she will forever hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life.

To Steve, family and friends, Words can't express our feeling of loss. Mary Ann held a wonderful and special place in Ronelle and my life. We lived on one side and she lived on the other side of our old Powderhorn duplex. We walked around Calhoun at least a hundred times, vacationed with Steve and Mary Ann in Lake Tahoe and continued the fun in San Francisco. Mary Ann and I drove down HW1 from SF to LA. What a trip and of course tons of laughs. I’ll never forget all the meals, the parties, the Juicy Lucy's at Matts and the afternoons at the Enblom's pool in EP. She was a special friend. I'll miss her calling me Kently and Kingy. I never knew where she came up with that. My Mom adored her. Who didn’t? So full of life and adventure. She taught me so much about music, food, the joy of travel and the wonder and richness of all cultures. Talk about being a citizen of the world. I can’t imagine a world without her and her music. I can't imagine missing Thursday’s celebration of her life but it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to make it. I just have to send my love to all of you who are mourning with us. Steve, you know we love you and you’re in our thoughts and prayers. Kent Strand

TO THE O'DOUGHERTY FAMILY: I used to live in the old "Tangletown" neighborhood and remember your family well. I remember playing tennis and walking to the beach with Peggy. I am so sorry for the loss of Mary Ann. She sounds like she was so vibrant and full of life!
