Passed away peacefully in San Mateo at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness. Jim was born in Chicago, IL where he met his future wife Rita Leonard while working at the National Traffic Safety Council. They married in 1951 and later relocated to St. Louis, MO and then to San Mateo in 1960.
During the 1950's, Jim began a career in the vending industry in sales and service working for such companies as Continental-Apco, National Vendors, Coffee-Mat and Rowe International. He was well respected and much admired within his profession for his knowledge and dedication. He also worked with his son, Jim Jr. in the vending business.
Flying was a lifelong passion including participating in the Civil Air Patrol and Quiet Birdman. He piloted a Piper Super Cub and a RCAF Harvard Mk IV (T-6) with Jim Jr and participated in many airshows. He was an avid collector of model airplanes and cars.
An animal lover, he enjoyed spending time with his dogs and taking them to Fort Funston (Snoopy, Clyde, Brandy, Kona and Fred).
He followed his three grandchildren's educational and athletic pursuits (soccer, baseball, basketball and football) while they attended Notre Dame and Serra High Schools. He also took immense pride in their academic accomplishments while at Santa Clara University (Matt), Stanford (Will) and the University of Kansas (Brittany) as well as watching his grandchildren play sports in college.
He is survived by his son James C. Powers (Valerie) of Foster City, grandchildren Brittany (Foster City/Lawrence, KS), Will (San Francisco), Matthew (Natalie) and great granddaughter Madison (Lee's Summit, MO)
His wife Rita predeceased him in 2011 and son Scott in 2009.
Jim's sense of humor and quick wit will be missed by those whose lives he touched. Donations in memory of his life may be made to Serra High School Basketball and Football programs, Notre Dame High (Belmont) Soccer and The Peninsula Humane Society.
