I remember SSG Voelz well. We were at COP Saint Michael; she was there to support the 3-505PIR. I remember as one of the best NCOs. We all come to respected her as she was very confidence, competent leader. We all come to like her and treat her like one of us, she was cool, could cussed like one of the boys, would dips sometimes on long missions. She was one of the first female we (Infantry) work alongside. Every Paratroopers on that small COP comes to respect her as a leader, every one of us Paratroopers took it really hard when she was killed. The Younger Paratroopers took it especially hard, because they all worked with her, and she taught them many lessons on how to proper ways to handle explosive/IEDs. She is miss and often thoughts of. Thank you SSG Voelz. May you rest in peace and keep looking out for the Paratroopers.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and to also let the Voelz Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Tomorrow will be Veterans Day and I just wanted to express my thanks to you and your family for the sacrifices you have made. I didn't know you but I knew of you when you stopped by our hospital on your way to heaven in Baghdad, Iraq. I never forget that day, your husband when he arrived to see you and the sacrifice you made that day. Although it's been a few years you are still remembered.

I wanted to come here to express how deeply Kim's story has touched people who never knew her. I am a college English instructor, and one of my assignments is to have students review the StoryCorps website and choose a podcast to write about. Quite a few of them choose the one Max did about Kim, and they are so moved by her bravery and so inspired by their story.

Another Memorial Day passes.
When we were kids eating burgers and playing ball on this day, who knew how it would bond us all in a solidarity of spirit and commemoration later?
I remember three events in my live so clear I can almost reach out and touch them again. I remember where I was and what I was doing, the temperature, who I was with and the sensations that make it nearly surreal.
1. Space shuttle challenger, 01/28/86 - I was with my recruiter Tony Adams (who remembers their recruiter?) on the way to a high school when we heard it on the radio.
2. 09/01/01 - I was in a DR.'s waiting room and watched it unfold from start to finish. My Endocrinologist's office. I was alone there. Blue carpet. It was a nice day outside. One of the nurses had brought home made muffins. I remember the smell of coffee and vanilla.
3. When I heard the news about Kim. I had just got back from getting the EOD teams badged and oriented around the 18-acres in DC. I was in the small open area in front of the TSD building where the people all come outside to smoke.
My Boss's Boss Mick was there for a budget meeting with the bean counters and he mentioned it in passing to the EOD personnel. It was like I had been hit with a shovel in the face, not merely slapped.
I asked him at least 2 times if he was sure it was Kim Voelz? I guess I had hoped he was mistaken or had heard wrong and he was playing a black sort of joke EOD people are sometimes fond of.
I had loved being an instructor at Redstone Arsenal. I was honored to have taught both Max and Kim for EOD Phase-III, as well as Unit Refresher, BNCOC, and Pre-deployment at one time or another.
Before I learned about Kim's passing it had not been that long since I had taken her in a group of EOD techs around for that same briefing. She came up first and did White House Duty, then the very next month Max came up and did his month.
EOD is such a small world really.
It seemed like moments between when the two of them did their OEOB and when I was hearing that terrible news about Kim.
When Mick had satisfied me that he wasn't playing a joke and went over to answer questions and chat with "my EOD group" I stood apart, calling to memory that day long ago at the Phase-III dig-site where soldiers had to demonstrate practical knowledge and operation of the hydraulic pavement breaker on the SEE-vehicle.
Kim was not a large person, and the pavement breaker weighed 90-lbs by itself without the hoses and the bit.
I still remember all of my fellow instructors yucking it up and pointing while she set it up for operation (unaided of course) and I still remember how very proud I was of her for getting a "GO" on it.
That was the memory I had while standing there in front of the TSD building. Because from that point forward she did many other things that made her 'the standard' or the 'template' that I judged all females who wanted to be EOD techs. She was smart, tough, (funny) and competent...and a hell of a friend.
You were lucky to have each other Max. Both great people. God bless you. /raisesbeer

My memory isn't what it used to be but here goes. I met Kim (then Fahenstock) on a VIP mission in Houston in '97 or '98. She was stationed in MS, a unit I had just left in '96. She was an awesome person and seeing her smile made an ordinarily mundane mission seem new and exciting. I ran into her a few more times in the late '90's and she always had that smile on her face! I feel lucky to have known her; and even though I didn't know her other than those few missions, I still think about her from time to time. My heartfelt sympathy to her husband, family and friends. Rest in peace Kim, you are missed.

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I didn't personally know Sgt. Voelz. I had the opportunity to learn about her because of a trackable coin in her memory and honor through Geocaching.com. Mrs. Voelz has her own coin and it is moved by a tracking number from place to place and from person to person telling her story. It can also be tracked around the world. This particular series of coins is called "Fallen Heros Geocoin" and they honor fallen soldiers of the USA in the Iraqi war. It is a special honor to be able to read about Sgt. Voelz. Thank You to her and her family for the brave sacrifice made for the freedom of all people and for my family and our country.

THE WREATH is symbolic of the achievements and laurels gained by minimizing accident potentials, through the ingenuity and devotion to duty of its members. It is in memory of the EOD personnel who have given their lives while performing EOD duties.
THE BOMB was copied from the design of the World War II Bomb Disposal Badge; the bomb represents the historic and major objective of the EOD attack, the unexploded bomb. The three fins represent the major areas of nuclear, conventional, and chemical/biological warfare.
THE LIGHTNING BOLTS symbolize the potential destructive power of the bomb and the courage and professionalism of EOD personnel in their endeavors to reduce hazards as well as to render explosive ordnance harmless.
THE SHIELD represents the EOD mission which is to protect personnel and property in the immediate area from an inadvertent detonation of hazardous ordnance
Rest in peace Kim. You will always be remembered.

Max and family. I am very sorry for this loss. Though I know its been a little while now since Kim's death I have wanted to send my condolences since day one of hearing the news. I am the recent widow of SFC Scott Smith, a tech stationed with the 737th. He was kia in the same place as Kim on July 17th 2006. I remember hearing of the news of Kim and how you were there with her when she died. We were stationed at Picatinny and I wanted to come and attend the funeral services but Scott wasn't able to make the funeral date due to TDY. I really feel your pain and loss and I don't know how you deal with it as I am going through some of the same things and not sure how I am dealing with the loss of such a great husband, best friend and a hero. I always have felt a deep sadness anytime I heard of an EOD tech being killed. Its a small family and they will always be my family. I hope you have found your peace that everyone keeps speaking of. I have doubts that peace exists for me. I will keep you in my thoughts and I wish for safe returns from all your incidents, deployments, tdy's and vips.
Sincerely,

I look for your presence often Kim. I don't think there is a month that goes by that I don't tell your story. Not the story of your dying. That was the least thing I could ever relate about your life....but about how you lived. You see Kim...that day you were at the dig-site in Huntsville and you picked up that 90LB pavement breaker and did what I showed you to change the bits...and did it competently and with no complaints even though ALL my associate instructors were poised to laugh at you at your slightest mistake...You became my hero way back then. You became the mold by which I then judged all other female EOD techs from THAT MOMENT forward. To this date...29 may 2006, you are still that mold. There are few male EOD techs that live up to the standard you set. You were pretty, You were tough, you were confident, funny, and competent. I wish I was able to have died in your place. You are so terribly missed KIM.
God bless you and keep your family always.
