October 3, 1953 - September 22, 2018
Steven Louis Hutzler passed away from this lifetime far too early on September 22, 2018. Born October 3, 1953 to Louis and Norma Hutzler, Steve was a fourth-generation San Franciscan. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1971 and after a brief stint as a lineman for Pacific Bell, he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the San Francisco Police Department in 1977, where he worked for 28 years. Steve's final detail was working with SFPD's finest the motorcycle "solos". Steve lived to protect and serve his community both in his professional and personal life. After retirement, he moved his family to Corvallis, Oregon where he continued to cherish and build the community he loved. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I had the pleasure and honor to work a plainclothes car with Steve on the 1900-0300 watch at Central Station.
He was a good guy--and great cop. I learned a lot by watching how Steve treated the down-and-outers and how he talked with all kids of folks--dope addicts, prostitutes, and so many other Tenderloin denizens. He made them feel like human beings.
He wasn't play acting, he had some sense that enabled him to care and understand.
If you were working with "Red," (as a lot of street people called him), you were automatically OK with people who didn't generally like cops.
They knew you were with a good man and you got the benefit of a doubt because they knew Steve treated folks fairly.
If there was a door to go through or a tough battle, you wanted Steve. If there was someone grieving because their loved one had overdosed, he was the one for that too.
And between all of the tough stuff he saw and went through, he managed that smile and a good word that could light up a room.
He was was easily one of the best cops and one of the greatest humans I've known. I was blessed to have worked with him.
My deepest condolences to the Hutzler family.

Steve Hutzler: What a quality human being. I will miss your seemingly endless ability to inspire and motivate. You're stronger than you think you are and When your mind says quit, your body still has another 40% to give are two of your sayings that I will never forget. Beyond your skills as a yoga teacher, you were a genuine spiritno pretense, no small talk, just a sincere and honest connection every time. You are loved by so many and we miss you

To the Hutzler family, I am shocked and saddened to read of the death of Steve. When he retired , he just left quietly as he always did, no fan fare no nothing, now he has done it again. My heart as yours is very heavy. I will never forget your quiet wit, and the equal way you treated everyone. You will always be in my heart, until we ride again, God speed my brother solo.

I will miss my brother beyond words. He was the person in my life that helped me make sense of what was not so sensible. He always told me, " You're stronger than you think." Well Steve, help me make sense of this. You will be forever in our hearts! Say Hi to Mom and Dad while you're at it

Steve was my brother and I miss him. I will always remember when I did not know what to do he would say to me, "When I don't know what to do, I go pick something heavy up and lift it!". I love you Steve. You will forever be missed.

To the Hutzler family.
I am very sorry to hear about the passing of Steve, and your family is in our prayers. Steve was one of the strongest men I knew in the S.F.P.D. family. He took time to instruct me on how to be a better bench press competitor. Steves, Joe, and John's efforts paid off for us, as we all made S.F.P.D. PROUD that year!!
My wife has very fond memories of Steve, as he was part of the training staff at the academy when she went through. The things he taught her kept her safe during her career and we are thankful for his presence in our lives.
Sincerely,
J and Danielle Newman, Sonoma CA

Molly and Family,
I worked with Steve our last 10 or 12 years or so on the SOLOS. Had many lunches with him and great conversation. He had a wit and wisdom about him way beyond his years. His memories of his road trips with Joe and Moose, will live on forever. My sympathies to you all, and know he was loved and respected by all he worked with.

Though I only knew Steve for a few months as a Bikram Yoga teacher at my local studio, he made enough of an impression on me that I've been deeply saddened by the news of his passing - the idea of him never being far from my mind these last days. What a special soul he was. I can only imagine where in the cosmos he might be right now....

So sad to read this today. Steve was a PT instructor at the academy when I came through and though he was pretty quiet, you could always get a chuckle out of him. Condolences to his family.

I cannot begin to say how much this man meant to me... As a fun, down-to-earth, caring yoga instructor at our studio in Corvallis, Oregon it was obvious how much he cared for his students. We are heartbroken... life has suddenly taken on a different tint. Steve will be dearly, dearly missed.

I met Steve when we were both 12yrs. old. He ran with his neighborhood gang, the Marview Mauraders and played clarinet (I played drums) in the school band & orchestra. Later in high school Steve played football, was the light-heavyweight boxing champ (I was light-middleweight champ) and he was a star in the Senior Show ! In our late twenties Steve taught me a valuable lesson about myself that I still review daily. That's the kind of good friend that he was. We had many adventures together, but I'll never forger the look on his face when we took him surfing at Ano Nuevo , nearly half a century ago. Farewell, old friend. Knowing you was truly my pleasure. Yoga ?!?! Really ?!?! Way to go, Hutz !!!

Steve touched my life profoundly with his great talent as a yoga teacher. He was absolutely loving and generous. It just flowed from him. I knew that when I walked into his class I'd feel secure and happy throughout and it would never seem repetitive or boring. Everything he said was meaningful or funny - or both. I truly loved him. It's strange to love someone who you only know in one role, but that is what he inspired in me. I cannot imagine the grief of those closest to him....I am so sad and sorry for your loss.
