Clifton Douglass Obituary

Dr. Clifton Ford Douglass, Jr., M.D.
August 1, 1927 - February 18, 2023
Clifton Ford Douglass, Jr., M.D., age 95, died on February 18, 2023 surrounded by his family after having lived a life of love and laughter. Born in Sherman, Texas on August 1,1927 to Ruth Harrell and Clifton Ford Douglass, he and beloved sister, Ruth Ann, were reared in the United Methodist Church which provided a foundation for his devout Christian faith. Upon his graduation from Sherman High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in WWII. At its culmination, he headed to Austin where he earned his BA from the University of Texas and met the love of his life on a blind date. Clif professed his love for Sharrard Hopkins of San Antonio, and became unofficially engaged during a "pinning ceremony" singing with his Delta Tau Delta pledge brothers in front of Sharrard's Tri-Delta sorority house. Clifton and Sharrard Jane married in 1949 and soon moved to Galveston where he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School in 1955. While training in New Orleans for his specialization in Radiology at Ochsner Clinic, they welcomed their three babies before returning to San Antonio in 1961 to begin his practice with Radiology Associates. Clifton enjoyed his memberships in the Bexar County Medical Society, T.M.A., A.M.A., the Texas Radiological Society and the Radiological Society of North America and went into private practice in South Texas until his retirement in 1998. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Douglass was never too busy for his family, community or church. As an Eagle Scout himself, he enjoyed his role as Scout Master for many years and loved serving his church as Lay Leader, first at Laurel Heights Methodist Church and later at Alamo Heights Methodist Church. Clif had a deep love for the game of golf and spoke with great reverence about "the time he scored a 71 on the Old Course at St. Andrews" before laughingly confessing that that score was indeed accurate, but only on the first nine holes. He and his son, Clif III, won the Father-Son Tournament at the San Antonio Country Club, this time being victorious throughout the entire 18 holes.

Dr. Douglass was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years and will be greatly missed by his three children: Heather Douglass Wolff (Harry), Clifton Ford Douglass III (Beth), Hillary Douglass Noe (Russell), six grandchildren: Harry Walter Wolff III (Erin), Clifton Ford Douglass IV "Ford," Katherine Elizabeth Douglass "Kate," Heather Noe Reagan (Joaquin), Laurel Noe Rittenhouse (David), and Sage Noe Blount (Rowe) and nine great-grandchildren: Harry Wolff IV "Hank," Weldon Wolff, Lyle Wolff, Wyatt Reagan, Stella Jane Reagan, Thomas Rittenhouse, Christopher Rittenhouse, Georgia "Finch" Blount and Cordelia Blount.

In lieu of flowers, the Douglass family would be honored by a donation in his name to Susan G. Komen. Arrangements will be provided by Mission Park Funeral Chapels North for a private family service. You may sign the online guestbook at www.missionparks.com.
