Dear Chabot family,
I was a transfer student at American University in 1976 and was in Dr. Chabot's Modern Fiction class. He often came to mind when I told people how excellent my professors were at AU. I had transferred from Sewanee, which at that time considered anything "modern" too "of the moment" to bother studying. Dr. Chabot's course was relevant, entertaining, and serious, and terribly valuable. I recently bought a book we'd read in that course, and so googled his name. I am so sorry to see he recently passed away. I didn't know him other than the smart professor with a cigarette and Diet Coke (I think), but you knew he was just a good man. I am sure his family is grieving his loss. You have my deepest sympathy and condolences.

Dear Susan and family,
Mary Jean Corbett passed this sad news along to me, and I want to share how much Barry/Dr. Chabot meant to me in my graduate school years at Miami (87-91). I had two classes with him, memorable for the rigor as well as the laughter; I loved his reading lists, his classroom persona, and the challenges he set for us. In his role as mentor and department chair, he worked with me on my job search, and my own 31-year career at URI was definitely influenced by the example he set as a colleague with integrity and kindness. I respected him so much, and Mary Jean and I have often talked about him (and you) over the years.
Warmly,
