Lettie Brown Obituary

BROWN, Lettie Margaret Jensen

March 12, 1936 - March 6, 2024

Lettie Margaret Jensen Brown, 87, of Athens, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Gladys Jensen; and her brother, Dr. Peter Jensen. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Jensen; her three children and their spouses, Tony Brown (Lisa) of Gainesville, GA, Nancy Strandberg (Gregg) of Highland Beach, FL, Barbara Brown Hedrick of Fairview, NC; seven grandchildren: Amanda Brown, Pete Brown, Blake Hedrick (Emily), Lauren Ware (Matt), Paige Wimmer (Trey), Cole Strandberg (Belle) and Jensen Strandberg Keusch (Ben); and her seven great-grandchildren.

Lettie was born at Emory Hospital and was raised in Atlanta. She attended Morningside Elementary and was a graduate of Grady High School Class of 1954. She attended the University of Georgia and in 1958 obtained a Degree in Executive Business Administration. She was a valued member of the Delta Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma and a Phi Delta Sweetheart. Upon graduation, she worked for an investment banking firm in Atlanta. In 1959, she married Rudy A. Brown, Jr. They lived in St. Louis, MO, Atlanta, GA, Montgomery, AL, and Columbus, OH, before building a home in Dunwoody, GA. There, they and their three children created lasting memories and enduring friendships with their neighbors of Village Mill.

Lettie used her organizational skills as Personnel Manager at Lord & Taylor, Operations Manager at KGB Interiors and at Lewis Reeves Properties. She was a proud member of the Dekalb Junior League and a founding member of St. Lukes Presbyterian Church, where she played a major role in the Children's Ministry. In 1979, she and Rudy started a home building business; she was the Business Manager and remained there until her retirement in 1994. As Atlanta expanded, they moved to Alpharaetta and then to Statham. In 2004, she moved to Athens, GA where she established her own home and volunteered with the Salvation Army, Athens First United Methodist Church and the Athens Bridgearama.

Lettie had a passion for friendships, family and sports. She loved her time at the beach whether it be with family or her special group of girl friends. Her favorite places were St. Simons Island and Perdido Key. She always looked forward to playing Bridge with her friends around Athens and going to Bible studies at her church, as well as watching the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves. She set an incredible example of what it means to be a good, steadfast friend and demonstrated the power of friendship for those around her. Above all, she valued family and doted endlessly on her grandchildren (and great-grandchildren) who affectionately refer to her as "Mamaw." She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community.

A gathering of family and friends for Lettie will be held Monday, March 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens, Georgia. The Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, March 12 at 11:00 AM at Athens First United Methodist Church in Athens, Georgia, followed by a Graveside Service at 3:00 PM at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Lettie was a special friend from Morningside. We went through Morningside Elementary School, . Grady High School, and the University of Georgia together. Then we went our special ways but always kept in touch, and I visited her often.
I have lost, with many, a dear friend. Janet Edmmons McKean
