I learned of Mardrey's death via the Stony Brook University Crew Newsletter. I am a 1968 alumnus of the university and something about her first name clicked in my memory. I loved rowing for my three years at SBU; I was a stroke and co-captain in my Senior year. Over the decades, I told the story about a very strong-willed and courageous woman who was Coxwain in my shell; at the time, before Title IX, no women were allowed into varsity sports - and Crew was no exception.
When I saw the photo in these pages, I was taken aback at how quickly I recognized Mardrey's face! She may have even had similarly short hair as an undergrad. My recollection is that when we lined up to start our crew races, Mardrey was sometimes the recipient of crude and insulting remarks yelled by other male oarsmen.
Reading the handwritten letter she wrote about the poor conditions under which we rowed, the under-funded budget which the coaches had to work with throughout my rowing years (1965-68) was absolutely spot on! All of us had to love the demands of rowing to put up with the hardships.
And finally, I saw the photo of our old rowing shirt!! I still have mine.
Thanks Mardrey for drawing me back to a singular shared experience we had as undergraduates.
In closing, keep on rowing "harder."

Mardrey visited me when I was in NH to visit my daughter and Grandkids. We went on a walk where she told me about her love of geocacheing. It was a happy memory I will hold in my heart.

Rand,
I am so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed spending a little bit of time with Mardrey when she came into the office.
I am unable to attend the service but I will be thinking of you and your family.
Sincerely,
Mindy

I can vividly recall when the Swenson family moved to the Upper Valley, and a new student arrived in my fifth grade class. I was blessed to get to know Mardrey through my friendship with Ingrid, and enjoyed many playdates and overnights at their house in those younger years.
As an adult I was lucky enough to see her shopping at the Co-op Food Store in Lebanon when I worked there as a cashier. I always enjoyed seeing her smiling face and hearing her response as I asked her how everyone was doing.
Sending my love and well wishes to the Swenson family during this challenging chapter.

Sending love to the family. I have so many fond memories of walking dogs and hanging out most afternoons with Mardi, while our dogs played. Hugs, Hermine
