Jack Glickman Obituary

Jack Glickman

Florence, MA - Jack Glickman passed away peacefully, with three of his daughters by his side, after a period of failing health on April 18th just days short of his 96th birthday. Jack was born at home on Ventnor Ave, Atlantic City, NJ – notably the yellow property on the Monopoly board - to Louis and Rose (Singer) Glickman. The youngest of seven siblings, he spent many of the happiest days of his life playing on the beach, walking on the boardwalk and being a runner for his lifeguard brothers. Jack attended Franklin and Marshall College and was the third Glickman brother to graduate Phi Beta Kappa. Jack was then commissioned into the US Navy where he attended and taught in the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and served in Korea aboard the USS Salem.

During a trip to Northampton to visit his niece and nephew at Clarke School for the Deaf, he met his future wife, Evie. They settled in town and raised their children, while Jack followed in his father's professional footsteps, becoming a certified New York Life Insurance agent. He spent many years building his business while meeting people all over the Pioneer Valley. He was incredibly passionate about helping his clients plan for their financial futures and after 35 years, Jack found a protégé in Rob Ostberg, who met his high standards and took over the business, making him proud.

Jack was a dedicated father who made certain to live within walking or biking distance from his children's home and kept that promise while also spending as much time as he could proudly attending dance recitals, gymnastics meets, baseball games, musical concerts, in addition to providing endless homework help. Jack was most content tending to his gardens, watching college basketball and golf on tv, playing and teaching bridge and eating chocolate ice cream (always in moderation and lately only on Sundays).

Just before his retirement, Jack found love again with his wife Nylda. They spent years living and traveling all over the US and Europe and settled in a wonderful community in Arizona where they could both enjoy the warm weather and special friendships. They especially enjoyed trips to San Diego and Puerto Rico with Nylda's family where Jack could practice his Spanish and return to the beach.

Jack leaves behind his children Ruth (Scott) DeLisle, Gail Glickman, Emily Lazar (Marc), David and Amy (Aharon) Sharff, 13 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews as well as his stepfamily Sahira (Powel) Kazanjian and their children. Jack was predeceased by his parents and his siblings Richard, Murray, Charlie, Clara, Karen and Faye, wives, Evalyn and Nylda, his niece Linda Rose and his grandson Matan Lev.

The family would like to make special mention of and give heartfelt thanks for the extraordinary care provided to him by the Linda Manor staff in the Life Enrichment program and the Pioneer Valley Hospice. His last two weeks were full of comfort provided by his newest "family" of caregivers.

Arrangements are entrusted to Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home; graveside service will be private. If you are moved to do so, please consider donating to the Pioneer Valley Hospice in Jack's memory or buying a life insurance policy for those you love.

My mom was in the hospital bed next to Evie at one point of my mom´s illness. I remember Jack telling us that his parents made him memorize all the streets. He always brought a breath of fresh air to a hospital room that we as a family will always remember.

May Jack´s memory be a blessing to his family and all who knew him. The extended Glickman family has a special place in my heart.

Dear Ruth, Gail, Emily, David, and Amy, I am very sorry for your loss.
I knew both your Mom and Dad.
My fondest memory of Jack is when you were young children and every day during the summer he brought you to the Northampton Swim Club for swimming lessons. He was such a devoted loving father.
