Neil Anthony Roper

1947 - 2024

Neil Roper, 77, of Memphis, TN, restaurateur and raconteur, died February 25th, 2024, after a short illness.

He attended Staples High School in Westport, CT., University of Virginia and graduated from Michigan State University. During his time at Michigan State, he became a huge Spartans fan. He worked in Overton Square in the 1970s, eventually moving on to be part owner of the East End Grill, Partners and part-owner and General Manager of the Belmont Grill. He retired in 2015.

He spent his time gardening, working around the house, and going on road trips. He was heavily involved in his former high school class activities, specifically their high school reunions. He had a wonderful sense of humor which consisted of practical jokes, puns, and pranks. He was a very well-read individual and could carry on lively discussions about politics, current affairs and particularly music, which he was extremely passionate about as an audiophile. His infectious laugh was recognized by everyone who knew him. Those who knew him saw past his gruff exterior and loved him for his idiosyncrasies.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Denise, his parents, Eugene and Estelle Roper, and brother Timothy. He is survived by his sisters Anne Roper of Dublin, Ireland, Margaret Trainor (John), Erin Roper, his brothers Brian and Kevin Roper of Memphis, nieces and nephews, and his loyal cat, Buscher.

A gathering honoring Neil will be at Alex's Tavern on May 9th at 3PM.
