Beverly Otis

Beverly Bingler Otis passed away peacefully at her home in Nelson County, Virginia, on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 74, surrounded by loved ones.

Beloved daughter of the late Monk and Fredell Bingler, Beverly was born on July 18, 1951, in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was during her school-aged years that she met her future husband of 49 years, Russell Otis. Beverly and Russell lived a vibrant life that included international adventures, professional disco dancing, building their dream home by the river, and raising two daughters, Elizabeth and Allison.

Education was a central value in Beverly's life, and she dedicated an impressive 37 years to teaching Biology to students at Albemarle High School. Generations of students were inspired not only by her passion for science but also by her steady encouragement and unwavering belief in the potential of each student. Long before it was common, Beverly was a woman in STEM-leading with intelligence, determination, and quiet strength. After graduating from Lane High School, she went on to earn her undergraduate degree from James Madison University and her master's degree from the University of Virginia.

Beverly had been a devoted fan of University of Virginia athletics since childhood. She was an enthusiastic supporter of UVA basketball and football, attending every game she possibly could. Cheering on the Cavaliers was more than a pastime-it was a joy she carried with pride and excitement to the end.

Beverly will be remembered for her sharp mind, her dedication to her students, her love for her family, and her lifelong enthusiasm for gardening and travel. Her impact lives on in the many lives she touched, both inside and outside the classroom.

Above all, Beverly was a doting mother, sister, wife, and friend. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Russell Otis. She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth McKinley Otis and Allison Otis McCoy and her husband, Taylor McCoy; her brother, James Bingler, and his wife, Mary Russell; her two nieces, Alaina and Hannah Bingler; and her sister- and brother-in-law, Rick and Gail Manson.

A service to celebrate Beverly's life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at The Greencroft Club. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her honor to the University of Virginia Athletics Foundation.
