Eva Miller Obituary

Eva Miller died on July 27, 2024, after a courageous battle with arterial disease that she fought with faith and determination. She was born on January 28, 1942, to William and Eva Miller in Memphis, Tennessee.

Eva attended the University of Memphis where she received a master's degree in English and Literature.

She taught there and at various high schools for almost 40 years. An expert in Southern studies, Eva often spoke at Ivy league schools on William Faulkner. But her true passion was her church and youth ministry, Knightlife, where she touched young lives through her leadership. She grew especially fond of a close-knit group affectionately known as "The Miller Boys." With immense pride, she considered them her legacy.

Small but mighty, Eva was a faithful servant and loyal friend. She had a passion for dogs, especially Cairn terriers which she owned and enjoyed grooming. She also delighted in bird watching, gospel music, shopping, and trips to the beach.

Eva was preceded in death by her parents, William and Eva Miller, brother William Miller, Jr., sister-in-law Patricia Miller, and nephew William (Buddy) Miller III.

She is survived by her niece Mary Alice (Miller) Callaway; great nephew Liam Callaway, great niece Allie Callaway and dear friends Kathy Bartosch and Henry Miles.

Eva would like for us to appreciate nature, care for animals, enjoy good friends, be kind to others, and trust in God.

Her service will be Saturday, August 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at 2nd Presbyterian Church, 4055 Poplar Avenue, Memphis TN 38111 with reception immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to 2nd Presbyterian Church (https://www.2pc.org/).

Ms. Miller tried to get Faulkner through our thick heads at Sheffield, and back in the day when high school students could go on field trips took us to Oxford, MS, to meet some of his family and get to know the author on another level. She was also one of my Daddy's customers at Morris Hardware, so we went to her home a couple of times for repairs. Times have changed, but I bet Ms. Miller didn't. May she rest in PEACE. Cathy Brake

Eva was one of my teachers at Sheffield High School who had a tremendous impact on my desire to write correctly, regardless of the format. Her English classes were structured to make you recognize writing mistakes and understand how to use proper grammar. I remember as a kind gentle soul, with the roar of a lion. She will truly be missed. Rest well, English mentor!!!
