James "Jim" Duke Obituary

James "Jim" Duke, 83, passed away July 24, 2025, surrounded by his daughters, who were his world. A lifelong storyteller, a master of dad jokes, and a man who never met a stranger, Jim lived a life full of laughter, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him. Born in Sidonia, Tennessee, Jim was the kind of man who remembered everything-names, stories, birthdays, and the little details that made people feel special. He had a gift for making anyone feel like the most important person in the room, whether he'd known you for a lifetime or just a few minutes. His faith was evident in how he lived and loved. As a devoted member of Central Church since its original location on Linden Avenue, he greeted everyone with his endearing smile and southern charm. He enjoyed many years sharing his love of the Lord through song as a member of the choir. Jim, also known as Jimmy, graduated from Treadwell High School-home of friendships that would last a lifetime. He also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force Reserves, this chapter of his life along with his love of Jesus helped shape the strength and integrity he carried into everything he did. After his service, Jim found his true calling as a Realtor. He spent decades helping people find home-not just in real estate, but in the way he made them feel. His Crye-Leike family meant the world to him, and he considered his coworkers lifelong friends and trusted companions. Above all, Jim was a devoted, father, grandfather, and friend. He built a life rooted in love and legacy. His greatest joys came from time spent with his family, and his greatest strength was the quiet way he showed up for them, time and again. Of all the roles Jim played in life, "Daddy Jim" was his favorite. He adored his four grandchildren beyond measure, proudly cheering them on at games, their accomplishments and celebrating their milestones. His love for his family ran deep, steady, and unconditional. Jim is survived by his children, Dana Whitworth (Jason) and Wendy Marable (Brian) and grandchildren Connor, Grayson (Audrey) Jon Duke and Sarah Kate, sisters Peggy Rinaldi (Richard) Nelda Giatris as well as countless friends, clients, and classmates who became like family. He was preceded in death by his mother & father Kathryn Duke and James Duke as well siblings Jerry Duke and Elaine Young. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on August 1st at Central Church, visitation 10-12 and Memorial Service to follow. The family asks that you honor Jim's memory by sharing a story, telling a great joke, laugh out loud, make a new friend or simply making someone feel seen-just like he always did. He was truly one of a kind, and to be loved by Jim Duke was to know you mattered. The one who made everyone feel like somebody, the constant and the calm in our storms. There will never be another Jim Duke but may his legacy live on by offering the world more of who he was.

Jim and I were in the same homeroom (12-8) at Treadwell High so I have known him for many years. He was a fine upstanding man who I am so sorry for his loss. He was the one who always, along with several others, arranged our Treadwell runions every 5 years. A lot of folks are going to miss him.

Sad to hear about uncle Jimmy. I always enjoyed my times with him when I lived in Memphis or visited there. Same with my phone calls/ chats, he always had funny lines. Gone but Not forgotten. God Bless

I've known Jim Duke since high school at Treadwell. He was Jimmy back then. He was a member of a monthly lunch group of fellow Treadwell graduates that I am part of. He always had a smile, a laugh, a story or a memory. My wife got to know Jim as a fellow Crye-Leike real estate agent. As she told me, "Everyone knows Jim Duke!" He will be missed...really missed! But I know I will see Jim again in Heaven when God calls me home someday.
