John Pretto Obituary

John Battista Pretto

Greenfield, MA - John Battista Pretto, 69, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenfield on Sunday, August 10th, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and his beloved cat, Houdini. He was born in Pittsfield on November 28, 1955, the youngest of six children of Lino & Florence (Martin) Pretto.

John was Honorably Discharged from the Navy, after which he earned a B.S. from MCLA in North Adams. He proudly served over 32 years in federal service, including 30 with the U.S. Postal Service. He was known for a strong sense of justice, quick wit, and standing up for the underdogs.

He loved fast cars, faster motorcycles, and bicycles that could outpace traffic. In his later years, he spent much of his time gardening and birdwatching.

John is survived by his wife, Nancy Pretto; his children, Kai Pretto & Christina Briscoe; son-in-law, Jay Briscoe; future son-in-law, Jay Neal; grandson, Michael Briscoe; and his brother, Lino Pretto. He also leaves behind his dear brother-in-laws, Joe Audette & Timothy Wheeler, in addition to many other family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local food bank.

He will be missed more than he probably ever expected.
