Jeanette O'Connell Obituary

Jeanette "Ippy" O'Connell

Concord, NH - Jeanette "Ippy" "Mrs O" O'Connell passed peacefully surrounded by her family on December 5th.

Ippy was born on January 21, 1929 in Montpelier VT, attended elementary school there and then in Barre Vt. Following elementary school her family moved to Concord and she attended Rundlett Junior High School and Concord High School, where she met the love of her life, Robert "Conky" O'Connell. At CHS, Ippy lettered in bowling and was a member of the Acapella Choir, as well as performing in the Pirates of Penzance. She graduated with the class of 1946 and, after 2 years of courtship, married Conky in 1948.

Ippy was an avid reader and worked in the Walker School Library when her children were students there. She loved skating, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and her favorite sports team, the Boston Red Sox. She was thrilled when she was able to take her grandson to his first Red Sox game and introduce him to Fenway Park.

Ippy loved swimming and for many summers she would take her family to Newfound Lake where they would camp with a long-standing group of family and friends. She taught, or at least tried to teach, her children how to swim and instill her love of the water in them. Ippy was also known for her delicious Newfound Lake Midnight Burgers which were enjoyed for by kids and adults alike.

Ippy, or "Mrs O" as she was fondly known by many, many families around the White's Park area, was the crossing guard at Dewey School. For 20 years she made sure that every student made it safely across the busy intersection between Dewey School and White's Park. She kept every card she received from her young charges and always remembered their parents and siblings names.

Ippy is predeceased by her daughter Sandra Jean O'Connell Quint, her parents, Mildred and Einar Carlson, brother Arvid Carlson and sister Lynda Burnside.

She is survived by her husband of 77 years, Conky, sister-in-law Ann Carlson, brother-in-law Richard O'Connell, daughter Jo Ann Hopps, son and daughter-in-law, Dale O'Connell & Shelly Andrew, her grandchildren, Cari Ann Dahood, Lucas Hopps, Steven O'Connell, Dylan (Laura) McDermott, Sarah (Jt Travers) McDermott, and many beloved great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Concordia Lutheran Church, 211 N Main St. Concord NH. on January 21st at 2:00pm with a gathering immediately following the service at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 N Main St. Concord, NH.

In lieu of flowers Memorial donations may be made to your local school's library, or a charity of your choice.

Starting in 1986, Mrs. O got me safely across that dangerous intersection every day to and from Dewey School. I'm now 45 years old, but I still remember her kindness and how pleasant she was - I always looked forward to seeing her. I'm sorry to hear of her passing, but I'm glad she was able to touch so many kids' lives (and that I got to be a part of it). All the best to her family and friends.

I'm so sad to hear of Mrs. O's passing. I am 40 now, but I was one of those little kids at Dewey school who she helped safely cross the street. All of us kids really adored her, she was kind and patient. It's an honor all of us kids got to be a little piece of her life's story. Sending love to her family and friends.

I had the good fortune of growing up down the street from Mrs. O. She made the best grape Kool-Aid on the planet and her Whoopie Pies had bakery level magic. She was the local Uber driver, before anyone called it that, carting all us teenagers to and from school, friends´ houses, YMCA and sporting events. If I needed a paper typed for High School, she was all in. You could say she was showing up for my future, although I didn´t realize it at the time. Ippy was always up for a late-night game of bid-whist after her son, Dale, aka Oaki´s circle of friends got out of work. She valued connection and turned an ordinary night into something memorable. I´ve had the opportunity to visit her many times over the last 2 years at the nursing home; Ippy never lost her spark. She became the greeter and made everybody feel welcome.
Throughout every stage of her life, Ippy gave others her time, her undivided attention, and her warmth. That´s a legacy that will endure long after memories fade. Rest in Peace, Ippy.
