Amos Hoyt Obituary

Amos Derby Hoyt

Hanover, NH - Amos Derby Hoyt was born in Hanover, NH on January 7, 1931 to parents Amos Currier Hoyt and Mildred Derby Hoyt. He passed peacefully at Hanover Terrace on January 28, 2026 at 95 years of age.

Amos attended the one room school house in Hanover Center. He graduated Hanover High School in 1949. He married Donna Somerville of Norwich, VT in 1950 while serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

After discharge from the Navy, Amos attended Keene Teacher's College, graduating in 1958. Subsequently, he relocated to the Upper Valley where he and Donna raised their four children, living for a short time in Enfield, then Hanover for many years and then Enfield for many more years.

Amos taught Industrial Arts in the Hanover (Dresden) school district for a number of years. He touched the lives of many students and was known for his ability to logically think through issues, and for encouraging independence and logical thinking. He was an inventor of solutions to problems as well as physical objects. He enjoyed working on Model T's and Model A's and taking them to parades and on tours of the Upper Valley.

Upon retiring from teaching, Amos owned and operated a small construction business and later a repair service in Enfield, NH. He retired to Wilmot NH where he enjoyed spending time with his family and many grandchildren. He moved to Roger's House in Lebanon in his later years, where he and his dear friend Juliette King enjoyed retired life, keeping busy with countless "activities or projects" that Amos instigated. Amos loved to mentor and give to his neighbors when they were in need.

Mr. Hoyt was predeceased by his parents, his four sisters, Janet Thompson, Helen Smith, Elizabeth Jones and Dorothy Smart, his former wife Donna, and his son James. Amos is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Jane and Steven Plumley of Enfield, NH, Pamela Hoyt-Denison and Timothy Denison of Epsom, NH, and Ellen and Lloyd Hackeman of Enfield, NH, as well as 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his cherished friend Juliette King of Lebanon NH and her awesome children, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

Amos was a wonderful and very entertaining man. He had a huge influence on me when I worked for him in the summers as a teenager. He was a great teacher and taught me a lot, from construction and landscape work to truck driving and heavy equipment operation (although he once told me never to claim to be a carpenter). Everyone in town seemed to know Amos and would exchange waves with him as we drove past. I looked up to Amos and will always remember him fondly.

I first met Amos 11 years ago when I moved into Rogers House. We quickly learned he taught @ Hanover High while I was a student there. Amos was warm, welcoming & brought out the best in people. I will forever remember the Christmas gatherings Amos & his family hosted @ Rogers House for years. They were always the hilight of the season for many of us. My condolences to all those who loved Amos. He was one of a kind. RIP Amos.
