Letitia Ellis Obituary

Letitia Ellis

Pomfret, VT - Letitia Dick Ellis (1934-2026)

Letitia Dick Ellis, PhD, psychologist, author and humanitarian passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at the age of 91. Born May 9, 1934, in New York City, she was adopted and raised in Lake Forest, IL by Jane Warner and Edison Dick with two siblings, Marnie Last and brother Edison Warner Dick. She graduated from Smith College in 1956 and in 1957 she married William C. Ellis (1932-2018). She received her doctorate in counseling Psychology at Northwestern University ('82). In 1990, she and Bill moved to Santa Fe, NM allowing her to concentrate on her research and writing, leading her to her true passion for helping children in need. Titia and Bill moved to Woodstock, VT in 2001, a place they quickly fell in love with and remained engaged members of the community. In 2008, Titia founded the All One Family Fund to assist integrating at-risk children into healthy homes. She published The Search: A Memoir of an Adopted Woman in 2010, and in 2012, co-founded Woodstock's Adoption Triad Peer Group, serving birth parents, adoptive parents, and adoptees, which continues to meet to this day. Her family and friends loved and admired her tenacity, her intelligence, her quiet strength, her adventurous spirit and most importantly her huge heart. In her own words: "My deepest wish is that people will choose to react with love and hope instead of becoming overwhelmed by all the bad news in the world." Titia is survived by her half-sister Susan, her children David Ellis, Robin Ellis Driscoll, Bill Ellis Jr. and eleven grandchildren.

The family is planning a private memorial to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to UNICEF-USA.

My sincere sympathy in the loss of your mother. I met her through the Adoption Triad a dozen or so years ago. I am our daughter's adoptive mother and went to the first meeting feeling our family had resolved most of the issues we faced but also wondering if there were things we missed. I stayed on, mesmerized by the work she and Judith did to enable sharing by adoptees, birth mothers, adoptive families and others who were part of the process.
Her strength and commitment will be long remembered and appreciated by those who's lives she touched.
