Rudolph Konieczny Obituary

Rudolph Konieczny Jr.

South Deerfield, MA - Rudolph Andrew Konieczny Jr., of South Deerfield, Massachusetts, passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 79.

Rudy was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts on October 30, 1946, to Rudolph A. Konieczny Sr. and Jennie (Iwanicki) Konieczny, the second of four children. During his childhood, at the age of six, Rudy was diagnosed with polio, the sixth case in Chicopee in 1952. Fortunately, he did not suffer paralysis, though the experience shaped the determination and resilience that would define his life.

He attended public schools in Chicopee, graduating from Chicopee High School in 1964, where he distinguished himself as a standout athlete. He played on Chicopee's championship football and baseball teams, earning All-Western Massachusetts honors for several years. In 2009, he was inducted into the Chicopee High School Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing his exceptional achievements in both sports.

Upon graduation, Rudy was recruited by legendary Notre Dame football coach Ara Parseghian and attended the University of Notre Dame as a student athlete. There, he earned his place as a starting player and Monogram Club member-an honor given to varsity letter winners-and played on the 1966 Notre Dame National Championship Football Team, one of the most celebrated teams in college football history. This, along with the close relationships with his teammates and mentors, remained one of his most cherished accomplishments throughout his life. Rudy graduated from Notre Dame in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the College of Arts and Letters.

After briefly beginning his career as a teacher and coach, Rudy entered the business world, where he built a distinguished forty-year career as an executive specializing in human resources and labor relations. He worked for several major international companies, including Spalding, Litton Industries, James River Corporation, Avery Dennison, and ITT Corporation. Colleagues remembered him for his integrity, intelligence, and attention to detail. He was valued as a trusted advisor during difficult periods and contributed to strategic decisions well beyond his HR responsibilities. His professional relationships were among the most meaningful in his life, and he maintained close friendships with former colleagues long after retirement.

Rudy met his wife, Mary Beebe, while they were teaching together at the Kolburne School in New Marlborough, and the two were married in Great Barrington in 1974. They shared a loving partnership that spanned just over fifty-one years. Together they raised two daughters, Megan and Mary. Rudy was a loving, devoted and supportive father to his daughters. Many sporting events and family vacations spent on Cape Cod and the Maine coast were treasured memories that will be held close by those he loved.

Rudy believed in giving back to his community. He was a lifelong member of the YMCA, where he volunteered and provided guidance through his human resources expertise. He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee in his early years and later became a devoted member of Holy Trinity, now Blessed Trinity Parish, in Greenfield.

In his personal time, Rudy enjoyed all sports and loved tinkering with and driving the sports cars and vintage motorcycles he owned throughout his life. He had a wealth of knowledge and experience, and his perspective, wisdom and skill for repairs of all kinds were gifts to those fortunate enough to know him. He also treasured the time he had with the family pets throughout the years, in particular their most recent golden retriever Libby who was never far from his side during his retirement.

Rudy's presence was substantial, and his absence will be profoundly felt by his loved ones. In addition to his beloved wife and daughters, he leaves behind Megan's partner Mark Florczyk as well as countless colleagues, extended family and dear friends who will miss his guidance, his generosity, and his unwavering sense of responsibility for caring for one another. He felt things deeply and cared intensely about the people in his life and the principles he held dear.

In addition to his parents, Rudy was predeceased by his sister Beverly of Chicopee and his brothers Michael of Chicopee and Anthony of New Port Richey, Florida.

Funeral services and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wrisley Funeral Home in South Deerfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Franklin County YMCA, or The Brothers of the Holy Cross, Notre Dame, IN.

Rudy and I worked together for years at James River Graphics. He was a complete professional, always well prepared and working in the best interests of the company and employees. He was a skilled problem solver and excellent communicator. I'm smiling now just thinking about the many projects we took on together. My deep condolences to Rudy's family and wide network of friends.

I was a teammate of Rudy's for four years in high school. I still remember coach Moge putting Rudy and Me against each other. Rudy being and offensive lineman and me a linebacker. Two Polish kids going head-to-head. I have a great picture from a class reunion of the football team with Rudy and fellow teammates. My condolences on your lost.

Rudy played football with my cousin, Kent Lefebvre at Chicopee High School. That was quite a team! I played football with Rudy's brother Tony at Chicopee Comp and Rudy was an assistant coach. Rudy was a terrific person. I couldn't say enough great things about him. I next met Rudy at Spalding Sports when he was in employee relations. He was always a calming influence both on the field and in business. He was always such a great and inspiring person and such a great loss to his family and to those who knew him!
