Mira Braunstein Obituary

Mira M. Petrovic Braunstein

Concord, NH - Mira M (Mimi) Petrovic Braunstein, a longtime resident of Concord NH died on February 28, 2026. She was born in Zagreb, Croatia, the eldest daughter of the late Ivan and Paula Petrovic.

Growing up in war- torn Europe her earliest memories were of bombings, killings, starvation, hiding with her family for survival and friends disappearing overnight. She was haunted by these "gray images", as she called them, throughout her life. It prompted her to engage in humanitarian work, most notably with Bosnian refugees in the 1990s to help them make a successful adjustment to the new world.

In her teenage and young adult years there was deprivation and lack of liberties under socialistic rule in Croatia. She immigrated to the US in 1966 and settled in Concord NH. There she met and married a fellow psychologist, Leonard (Len) Braunstein. Mira obtained her MA degree in clinical psychology from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and continued her post-graduate education in the US.

Her professional career included a staff psychologist position at the Institute for Study of Developmental Problems of Children and Youth in her native Zagreb; A psychology intern and later staff psychologist at NH State Hospital, working primarily with adolescent girls; a teaching position (lecturer) at Nathaniel Hawthorne College in Antrim, NH; An associate professor of psychology at New England College in Henniker, NH teaching for over 35 years, twice at it's British campus in Arundel, Sussex.

She provided close mentorship which grew into friendship with numerous students, who credited her for their life accomplishments. Upon her retirement Mira continued to teach on a part-time basis in the NEC Prison Program in Concord NH, helping men turn their lives around.

Mira remained a faithful companion to her husband Len "in sickness and in health", cherished her twin daughters, Alexandra Lee and Andrea Jeanne, and her granddaughters, Leah Margaret and Suzanne Emily. She organized and looked forward to yearly family vacations in the Boothbay Maine area. Mira was an avid reader who loved classical music, the Beatles and nature. One of Mira's favorite hymns reads in part: "There is a land beyond the river, that we call the sweet forever, And we only reach that shore by faith's decree…".

Mira enjoyed attending the yearly Festival of Lessons and Carols at St. Paul's with her women friends. She was a member of Christ the King parish and cultivated a warm relationship with the Carmelite sisters. Honoring her husband's Jewish traditions she participated in yearly Hanukkah and Passover celebrations.

Mira was predeceased by her husband Len, her parents, a baby brother, a nephew and numerous aunts and cousins, all of Croatia. She leaves her daughter's families, Alexandra, Michael and Suzanne Scott; Andrea, David and Leah Nepa; her sister Alexandra and her family in Croatia; a niece and family in Tasmania and numerous other relatives and friends in the US.

There are no calling hours; the burial will be private.

Mira was an inspirational professor of mine at NEC.Henniker, NH in the early 1980´s. She became my guidance counselor and dear friend. I was invited to her home many times and enjoyed seeing Len and the girls, her warm company and delicious Turkish coffee! She has a special place in my heart. I shall love her always.

For many years Mira was a colleague, a neighbor (with whom I occasionally car-pooled), and a friend. She made delicious dinners accompanied with wonderful music. We shared a love for movies and discussing them along with pedagogies. Her students appreciated her care for them. Thank you, Mira, for your wonderful presence and your appreciation of the absurd!

Alexandra and Andrea, My heartfelt condolences on the loss of your mother. Mira was a wonderful person - always so kind and helpful. I saw her at Christ the King church a few years ago and it was good to reconnect. She was my sister Betty's very close friend. Mira gave me my first job which was babysitting you two on Spring and Trinity streets in Concord. May God's peace comfort you at this time.

Mira was a strong student advocate here at NEC. She would often help to organize Take Back the Night events and worked hard to empower and support students in the Women's Network. She made a difference here on campus. Sending best thoughts to her family. Rest in peace.
