Byron Norwood Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

Sgt. Byron Wayne Norwood Sgt. Byron Wayne Norwood, USMC, was killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq, at 12:06 p.m., Saturday, November 13, 2004. Byron was born in Austin, Texas, August 11, 1979, to Bill and Janet Aston Norwood, and was the third of five children. Byron graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1998 and was active in marching band, jazz band and drama. Upon graduation, Byron joined the Marine Corps, following in the footsteps of both of his grandfathers who served with the Marine Corps during WWII. After boot camp and then School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, Byron returned to Austin for reserve duty and college from 1999-2000, and in late 2000 began active duty as a recruiter s assistant. He went to active duty with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines in July 2001 as a Corporal. He completed a sea deployment with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from June through December 2002. From February to May 2003, Byron s unit fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During a year back at Camp Pendleton, Byron spent time studying Arabic and was deployed to Iraq a second time on June 19, 2004. He was promoted to Sergeant July 1st, and participated in the training of Iraqi Special Forces as well as duty with Weapons Company. Byron believed strongly in the Marine Corps objective to assist in the rehabilitation of Iraq and in protecting the American people. He had a passionate love for his country, his family, his friends and God. Byron s captivating sense of humor and beaming smile enriched the lives of those around him. He shared his love for his family and friends openly and considered it an honor to be their protector. Byron was kind, sensitive and considerate, always placing others needs before his own. Byron s last selfless act was giving his life for his country. Byron is survived by his parents, William and Janet Norwood of Pflugerville, sister Kristen Norwood Hullum and husband, David of Pflugerville, brother Grant Norwood of Austin, sister Grayson Norwood of Austin, and brother Colin Norwood of Pflugerville, as well as grandparents Jake and Jeane Aston of Houston. Aunts and uncles include Ron and April Aston, Randall Aston, John Scott Norwood and Nancy Norwood. Cousins include Adam, Laura, Emily, Rachel, Melanie, Megan and Jason Aston, and Christopher and Cassandra Norwood. Byron was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Louise Norwood. Visitation will be held at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville on Saturday, November 20, 2004 from 5:00 7:00 p.m. Services will be conducted on Sunday, November 21, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Pflugerville High School Fine Arts Center, followed by interment with full military honors at Cook-Walden Capital Parks, 14501 N I-35 in Pflugerville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sgt. Byron W. Norwood Memorial Fund to assist Marines wounded in action and to benefit families of Marines killed in action. Send c/o Tx. I was just a small girl when you were taken from this world, but I´ll never forget running into your arms when you came to visit my parents after coming back from a deployment.
You´ve been the sunshine in my hair and the shadow on the ground ever since.
I love you and miss you dearly Norwood.

To the Norwood family... its been 15 years since the passing of Byron. He will never be forgotten ... that is a fact . He gave his ultimate sacrifice for all of us here in the United States for freedom . Still there are no words due to his life that was cut too short. Byrons loss as well as the thousands of other soldiers should never be forgotten. May the Norwood family still find some comfort after so many years. May Byron be in Gods hands and give him enteral peace til we see him some day in heaven . God bless every active soldier still protecting the United States and every war veteran that they all deserve nothing but the best.

It only seems fitting that we should honor you on this Fourth of July. If it weren't for you, your brothers in arms, our veterans and all branches of our Military, we would probably not be living the lives that we are able to live today.
From freedom of speech and religion, to the very small taken for granted freedoms like taking a drive, shopping, walking our dog, we thank you.
To say thank you just doesn't seem to be enought. I will Honor you for as long as I live. I Will Never Forget.

We thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence
We often speak your name.

Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part
God has you in His keeping
We have you in our Heart.

Happy Birthday, baby brother! Today would have been the big 3-0, wow. It's so hard to move into our 30's and leave you behind, frozen forever at 25. I miss you so much sometimes that I can't breathe.
Our family met at Baby A's for our annual celebration of your life. We toasted you with Jack and Cokes in your honor. Then Grayson, David and I enjoyed a bite of cake with you at the cemetery.
Can't wait to be with you again - I love you.

Today I watched the moving tributes from this young man's sister and on looking at the messages written here, I noted that today is his birthday. While every special occasion such as this one inevitably brings bittersweet memories, I'm sure that the love and devotion that is so evident in the photos and what you've all written about him will enable you to continue to share your love and all the good memories as well. Happy birthday Byron - you are honored and remembered, even by those of us who weren't fortunate enough to know you in your lifetime.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Byron, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To Mr. and Mrs. Norwood and family members; words cannot express on your loss of your son. Even though I never knew your son Sgt, Byron Norwood, somehow he has touched my heart due to the fact that I also have a son his age. Today, Monday, August 11, 2008 is his birthday, and almost four years since his passing. I cannot image how much you all miss Byron. May God almighty some how manage to heal your grief. With his pictures I'm sure you will never forget him. If you don't mind I will pray the rosary for him, light a candle for Byron at the Basilica Shrine in San Juan, Tx and for the Norwood family. I am proud for his honor and service and for what Byron stood for. Hopefully one day I can go to Pflugerville and place some flowers and honor him for his duty. Once again, may God some how comfort the Norwood family through prayers. I'm sure Sgt. Byron Norwood will forever live in our hearts for he is in a better place. I, Armando Rodriguez thank Byron from my heart for his honrable service. God Bless you all.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,

Do not stand at my grave and cry-
I am not there... I did not die...

Thank you for your service. You are an American hero and will not be forgotten.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Happy Birthday, Bro!
You would have been 28 years old today. I just still can't believe this is what has become of our lives. I'm trying to stay upbeat today, but it's hard. That overwhelming sense of your loss hits me again every morning before I'm able to even open my eyes. This morning, that feeling was especially heavy. I took off today so that I could hang out with you, do things you would have liked. I think David and I are going to walk around Town Lake this morning - we did that last year and it was relaxing. Then maybe a nice lunch somewhere, and we'll come by and have a piece of cake with you at the cemetery. Everyone's meeting at Mom and Dad's tonight to look at Colin and Jenn's Honeymoon pictures. Then, we'll go to the park and have our normal birthday picnic for you by the Fallen Warrior Memorial.

I've been working on scanning in all of our old family pictures and replacing them in new albums. I keep seeing these pictures of you growing up through the years. It's just so hard to know that will not continue. How do we continue to grow old without you? Up to this point, the 5 of us have still been in order. But, this year Grayson will turn 26, older than you. It feels wrong, like we're leaving you behind. One more painful thing to get used to, I guess.
Byron, I love you and miss you more than I could ever say. You are in my heart every single moment of each day. We're trying really hard to hang in there, because we know that's what you want. I can't wait until the day we're all together again. Familes are Forever.

See you soon.

Love,
Your Big Sister

Dear Bill & Janet,
I just learned by reading some of the good things said about Byron. I learned that he played the trumpet and was active in his high school plays. I like that..and remain ever more the impressed with this young Marine. As the old Gospel hymn say's, "count your blessings'...and name them one by one"....Kent & Vicki(and family)

To the Norwood family, I am wrinting to express my deepest condolences to you all.
I only worked with your son for a few months during my second tour in Iraq. I did get a chance to know him for a little while, before my unit rotated out. In the time that i got to know him, we got to develop a good friendship. I still have a picture of him acting goofy playing "go fish". He surely, without a doubt, could lighten up a room when it was needed. He is defenitly what I call "good people". I was Completely in shock and disbelief when i heard the tragic news. I will never forget him. It was a privilege and an honor to have served with him. My most sincere apologies,

Bill, Janet, and Kristen,

Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I have come here to pay tribute to your precious Byron... our Fallen 3/1 Hero. My heart aches now just as it did two years ago when we lost him. At the same time... there is a part of me that smiles, knowing what a wonderful son, brother and Marine Brother he was. When I have seen the tributes made to Byron in his home town I am overwhelmed with pride and love... I can only imagine how you, his family must feel. Know I am always here for you. Byron and the sacrafice he made will never be forgotten. God Bless you all.

Dear Family,
You have been such an inspiration for this country. I would pray that I would have the strength that you possess. I know my words provide little comfort, but please know we don't forget Byron and his and your sacrifice. Heroes each and every one! Our son was in the streets of Fallujah that day, his Birthday. Byron and Justin McCleese are not forgotten.
God's Blessings on you all.

My last memory of Byron is when he ripped my stereo out of my car. The night I met him & my current husband Jeremy Settlemire who served with him in 3/1 and was in Fallujah, Byron made my night of wanting to just get away from everything memorable. I remember looking across the dance floor at the Branding Iron in San Bernardino Ca. and looking at him and Jeremy and saying that he looked like he had lost his friend well come to find out it was the fact that he had just left his girlfriend before he came to California and that was bothering him. Well I know that when he left us here and went to the greater person above we will be the ones who lost a good friend. Byron, here is to you while u look down on us, thank u for the memories. Love Robin and Jeremy Settlemire

Happy Birthday my precious baby brother! Today you would have been 27 years old. It is so bizarre to continue growing older as you stay frozen at 25 - but this is one of those ways that time goes on without you.

I didn't want to spend the day too sad, so David came home early from work and we went to walk around Town Lake. I must have seen a hundred feathers and butterflies, all little gifts from you. I bought myself a charm bracelet from James Avery and added the charms I've been collecting that make me think of you. Finally, David and I went to the cemetery and had a piece of birthday cake with you.

Tonight our family met at the park by the Fallen Warrior Memorial and cooked out - we had a birthday cake for you.

I miss you more with each moment, and the aching really intensifies - I don't think it really ever "gets better" as people say.

I love you so much and I'm so proud of you. I know that you wouldn't have changed anything that day, even though it meant you wouldn't be coming home with the other 7 Marines. You are not just an American hero, you are my hero. Today we celebrate your birth and every precious day we had with you. I can't wait to see you again one day, along with all of your brothers up there with you. As for tonight, I'll meet you out under the stars.

My deepest sympathies go out to the Norwood family. I have known Byron since we were in elementary school and we graduated from Pflugerville together. I will always remember he and I getting into trouble in class and cutting up together! it broke my heart to hear about what happened to him. I was serving in the Air force when it happened and I couldn't make it home to pay my last respect, but rest assure my thoughts and prayers have been with him and his family since then! To the family: Stay strong and close to God, I know that is the way Byron would have wanted it.
