Joel Egan Baldwin of Gulfport, Mississippi, born and raised in the Republic of Panama, was taken from his loving family and friends on 21 December 2004. This tragedy occurred in Mosul, Iraq, while Joel was proudly serving his country.
Joel was born 16 October 1967, in Coco Solo, Canal Zone, Republic of Panama to Spike and Wendy Baldwin. In 1987 he graduated from Balboa High School, and joined the United States Navy in 1988. In August of 1989 he married his high school sweetheart Claudia Veronica Jordan. After two and a half years of duty in Fort Davis, Panama, they moved to the Gulf Coast. After five and a half years at the Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Joel was selected for duty with the Naval Support Unit, State Department, and was stationed at the United States Embassy, in Mexico City for two years.
On 9 December 1995, he and Claudia welcomed the greatest gift of their lives, daughter, Cali Ravai. His love for the Gulf Coast birthplace of his daughter brought him back to continue serving his country and the community while raising Cali.
Joel was a loving, loyal, honorable, valiant, giving, hard-working person who positively impacted every person he met. All who knew him would agree that their lives were permanently enriched by him.
He was the greatest daddy, friend, and forever hero.
He is survived by and deeply missed by his wife, Claudia, his daughter Cali, sister Kelly Baldwin Morris, brother Andrew Baldwin, his mother Wendy Ruth Kurzdorfer Baldwin, and father William (Spike) Baldwin. Also mourning his loss are father-in-law Johnny Jordan, mother-in-law Yolanda Aizpurua Martini Jordan, sisters-in-law Jessica Bishop and Cristina Conroy, and brothers-in-law Michael Jordan and Craig Morris. Joel had seven beautiful nephews and one niece that adored him and he cherished them with all his heart. He is predeceased by paternal grandparents William Wescott Baldwin, Sr., and Electra Vunck Baldwin, and maternal grandparents Perce Elmer Kurzdorfer and Patricia Amy Thompson Kurzdorfer and a precious baby brother Amado Baldwin.
The funeral service will be Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 1 pm at the Northwood Christian Center, O'Neal Rd., Gulfport. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service.
Interment, with full military honors, will be in Biloxi National Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Claudia and Cali Baldwin Memorial Fund at Keesler Federal Credit Union.

Your grandchildren Myla Helani Rain and Finnegan Joel... I will always wish you were here to meet them and for them to know you. Your legacy, your love, and the amazing man you were is right here in their little faces. They will always know who you were and I think that there´s already little bits of you in each of them... Myla loves to laugh, she loves the moon and the rain, she´s determined, she doesn´t give up on anything! Finnegan is soft-hearted, quiet but goofy, loves his mama, he likes to watch and figure out how things work, he´s my sweet little boy. Loving them and watching them grow makes me so proud. They are Joel Baldwin´s grandchildren and you live on through them. I love you Daddy and I will forever miss you. Thank you for being the man that you were. I can´t wait to tell them all about you and for them to feel so proud that you´re their Grandpa.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Joel Egan Baldwin US Navy Chief. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Hey Brother, I know you and Craig are with Dad and the rest of the gang looking over us and smiling to no end on our blundering silliness... I can tell you for sure, as you made me want to be a Better Chief, Craig made me want to be a better Father... .. .
I got to see you BEAUTIFUL Sweepea. She is just that BEAUTIFUL! she was Comforting mom and other family like a Champ. seems a silly thing to some but it is a great testament to the compassion/Love she has in her. I now can only hope to be a better man than yesterday, because really, Mine own faults ans issues don't matter too much in the grand scheme of things as long as I make the attempt to be just as bad as some at this thing called life only a little better. A quick shout to the rainy morning sky to You, Dad, Craig, the list goes on....... Ping Joel, PING !!!!!!

The Loss of a Soldier
By: Mark Morris
To Iraq he went until he returned
To fight for our country and keep us free
His Sea-Bee buddies at that time affirmed
That for him to be harmed was not to be
While in the war zone he went to see friends
A man with a bomb destroyed this great man
His story of twists and turns quickly ends
There we were still thinking return he can
We got the horrible news with a knock
The news came from the mouth of a sad priest
The windows were shut and doors with a lock
We went to his house for a mourning feast
He will never exit our hearts and minds
He was one of the worlds greatest ever finds

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I am writing to offer my condolences to your family over the loss of your HERO Chief Joel E Baldwin. I also lost my son in Iraq on May 6/2007, so I can well understand your pain of losing a loved one so dear.
Your family may already be aware of this, but if not, then I recommend that you contact a man named Michael Reagan @
www.michaelgreaganartist.com
He will draw one portrait of the fallen soldier. He does this for free and will draw any picture of your choosing. He has drawn presidents and other celebrities. My husband and I got one and it has helped me with the healing process. Michael is a truly gifted artist that captures the very essence of the person he draws. I look at my picture everyday and it gives me a connection that I cannot explain.
I pray you will always be guided by a higher power to give you peace, comfort and strength.

I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

You were one of a kind, Joel...I know you earned many gold beads in Heaven before your time. Gone but never forgotten, always in our prayers. Thank you for never forgetting the Furlong family and sending pictures every Christmas. They are a true treasure and Claudia, he couldn't have loved a better lady. Joel you are truly missed by so many, see you on the other side, brother. Thank you for being such a good friend not only to me but to Ralphie as well. God bless you Claudia. Namaste.

Claudia,
You and yours are always in my prayers. Joel was a great friend and his love for you was even greater. There are no words to fill your void but know that so many people love you and Joel and that he made this world a better place to live in. He was always kind and made me laugh. I feel honored to have had him as a friend. God bless you and your family and bring you peace and comfort...namaste.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your Joel. Families all over the USA are grieving with you and praying for you. Joel was a very brave Warrior. You should be very proud of his service. Your Freedom Fighter has completed the mission and has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Joel in his arms and will give him peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Chief Joel E. Baldwin, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

I knew Joel in Panama, not as well as others because he was a couple grades higher than me at Balboa but he was a great guy. I was heart broken to hear of his death. I am proud of his sacrifice for his country and the I am even more proud of his family who sacrificed not having Joel around as much as they wanted because of his service to our great country. May God greatly bless you and your family.

It pains me going through each moment of life without you. Today is just another special day that you would have shown your romantic, sweet and thoughtful side. Something I yearn for, from you, daily......you are my one and only valentine, as I am yours. You always said I was one of life's best students. I will spend the rest of my life trying to learn, how to do this without you.....
Te extrano con todo mi alma cacho.
