Family-Placed Obituary
GILBERT, Richard A., Jr. Corporal age 26 died in a helicopter crash while honorably serving his country in Iraq on Wednesday, January 26, 2005. Born May 12, 1978 in Dayton, OH. Richard was employed for 7 years at BEHR, Dayton Thermal Products where he was cherished by all who knew him. He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Mary Martin; mother & step-father, Helen Gilbert and Bill Dawes; father & step-mother, Richard Gilbert, Sr. & Cindy Curry; brother, Robert (Bo) Gilbert; sisters, Melissa Rader and Melinda (Jason) Hollon; very special nephews, Stephen & Chad Rader, Reilly Gilbert and Travis Hollon and niece Tressa Hollon "Precious"; and a host of other relatives and friends. A great many people loved Richard, he touched everyone he met. Please join the family as they celebrate Richard's life on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005 at 10:00 AM in the Marker & Heller Funeral Home, Huber Heights Chapel, 5844 Old Troy Pike with Pastor Samuel E. Slagle officiating. He will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery near his beloved grandfather, Woodrow Martin. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 5-8 PM. The family would like to thank Captain Adam Close, USMC and his staff for all their assistance. We would like to extend a special thank you to Staff Sgt. Lonnie McMurchy not only for acting in the capacity with the Marine Corp but for being a close family friend all of Richard's life.

In a little more than a week it will be 4 years. I look back on it and it seems like both ages ago and yesterday.
I know, like you, I do not go a day without thinking not only of my son but of all those that died that day.
I also think about those that did not that day and the feelings that they may have for surviving and going on with their lives.
I’m sorry that I have never written before. I guess it was not my time to do so.
Out of all that died that day I only knew Mike, but they were all brothers and because of that, they were all, my son’s.

I still don't have the words to express the sorrow that has been left in the wake of your departure from our world into the next. No one has forgotten you or your Mother, and they never will. At night when I tuck my boys into bed Christopher will ask me to tell him stories about me as a kid, and even though it has been a year everytime he ask for those stories I tell him the ones about us, and I have yet to tell the same story twice. It has been a little over a year since Richard was killed. I still remember the day I seen it on the news that one of our very own (from dayton) was considered KIA. I was there for the funeral and will never forget how Richards family looked. God Bless you all and Richards memory will always be alive.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Richard. I did not know him personally, however I feel as if I lost part my extended family. My daughter's fiancee, Lcpl. Fred Maciel was on the chopper with Richard. Times like these make us so profoundly sad...yet so profoundly proud. We lost so much on January 26, 2005 and I know that the emptiness will be with us for a long time to come. However please take comfort in knowing that your family is in our prayers everyday. Our loved ones are heros and I personally find solice in knowing that they are in a better place. I am deeply sorry for the loss of Richard to the family. I know your pain first hand as my brother Sgt Michael W Finke was also on the helicopter. I have some comfort in dealing with the death that came way to soon for all, that they were and are family and they were together. It has been tough for all of us as I know that it has been for you all. I want you to know that my family is your family and we are here for you. I hope that you might contact me through email.

I know i already told you how proud iam that richie called me mom. It is an honor for such a person as richie to have said that to me. I want mom helen to know how remarkable you are. Losing someone you love is awful and no parent expects to out live there child so I hope and prayer with the love and suppourt of her family and friends Mrs. Gilbert will survive. I did not know Ritchie personally but I do work at Behr where he was employed and I know many people who did know him and let me tell you he was loved at work. We are all feeling a loss at Behr even those that did not know him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. I know there are no words to comfort in a time like this but just know that many people are thinking of you in your time of sorrow. I feel truly blessed that we have men and women that are willing to risk their lives to fight for freedom not just for our country but other countries as well.
