Chassan Henry Obituary

Soldier loved in neighborhood is killed in Iraq

Friends say Chassan Henry was funny, generous and respectful.

A 20-year-old soldier from suburban West Palm Beach was killed Friday by an explosion in Ramadi, Iraq.

Pfc. Chassan Henry had been stationed in Iraq with the Army's 2nd Infantry Division since last year. He was worried when his unit transferred from Korea to Iraq, friends said, but he tried not to show it.

In e-mails to friends, he said he saw a lot of gunfire. Bombs exploded almost every day.

"He wanted to come home so bad," friend Dana Cohen said.

Friday afternoon, neighbors saw an Army officer in an SUV pull up to the small house off Jog Road where he lived with his aunt. They knew he had come about Chassan.

"I didn't want him to join the Army," Zachary Wohlman, Henry's best friend said Tuesday, wiping away tears. "A lot of people didn't. But he wanted to go forward. He wanted to do something with his life."

The two were close from the time they were little, playing football in the neighborhood when Wohlman was barely out of kindergarten.

"Before he went to the Army, we were together every day, almost every minute. He was basically my brother," said Wohlman, 17.

Henry was one of two Florida soldiers whose deaths were reported by the Department of Defense Tuesday. Spc. Michael S. Deem, 35, of Rockledge, died Thursday in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division but was not in combat. The military is investigating his death.

Henry's girlfriend, 17-year-old Kim Tracy of Wellington, said she was drawn to him because he was so funny and so respectful.

"He was perfect," she said.

Tracy knew it was dangerous for him in Iraq. He told her it was a good day if no bombs went off, but he didn't like to talk about the fighting.

"He would just tell me he loved me," Tracy said.

At 13, Henry went to the Eagle Academy, a boot camp program run by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in Belle Glade. The program was supposed to last only six months, but Henry liked it so much that he asked to stay.

"There are less people trying to get you in trouble and more people trying to help," Henry told The Palm Beach Post for a story about the program in 1998.

The academy agreed to let Henry return. He helped start a new class to help mentor the newer recruits.

Henry started the program as a quiet kid, but came out a hard charger who wanted to do good, said Eagle Academy head Capt. Paul Miles, who kept in touch with Henry and relatives after graduation.

"I was very proud of him when he graduated from the Eagle," Miles said.

Henry briefly went to Wellington High after the academy, but left to go to trade school. At 18, he was living with friends and struggling to make money. He hoped the Army would give him a good career as a computer technician.

"He was pretty smart with things like that," friend Anthony Antonelli said.

Henry was uncommonly generous, friends said, helping people in the neighborhood fix their computers. Though he never made much money, he never let anyone pick up the bill.

Wohlman said he will never forget the time Henry insisted on giving two girls $40, just to drive the two boys a few miles home from the movie theater. He bought steaks for everyone at a barbecue to see him off last year.

Although Henry was a few years older than most of the kids in the neighborhood, he was well-liked by everyone, friends said. And he was a good influence, Cohen said:

"He kept everybody together and everybody out of trouble. ... A lot of the kids didn't have dads. They all looked up to him."

About a week ago, Henry called his childhood friend for the last time. He told Wohlman his battalion was about to start a two-week mission in the desert.

He sounded nervous, Wohlman said. He promised to call again soon.

Sgt Cruz, I hope you're doing ok, I know your platoon was hit hard during that tour. Ms. Henry, I regret never hugging you when we presented you that award in Colorado. I don't know how to truly start this so I am just going to type out what I am feeling as I am talking to Chassan or we called him Henry since we all went by our last names.

Henry,

I want to let you know that not a day goes by that you don't pop in my mind. It has been a hard 9 years, but I can only imagine how it will feel for your mother. Henry you were an outstanding Soldier since the first day you came to my team. You learn quickly, were motivated, and you wanted to excel in everything. I am pleased to have read all these warm felt comments left by others on here, it only shows a true testament of the type of man that you were. I still remember the day that we got in your new short barrel for your weapon, I can't believe how truly happy you were and the smile on your face was priceless, it was Christmas for you. You babied and took care of the barrel more than any other machine gunner I saw. We had many good days out in Ramadi and unfortunately many bad as well. I am proud to have served with you and will forever hold you as my brother in arms till the day I come see you again.

This is the hard part for me, I have held everything in for the past 9 years because of shame. Shame that I was not able to bring you back home. This same shame made me not be able to talk to your mom when she came to Colorado. I felt that I had let you down and the Team. I was being a coward because I did not want to face the harsh reality of what had happened that day. A day that I keep seeing in different place explaining how you past away. You didn't leave us because of injuries sustained by an explosion; I know because I was there holding you in my arms and hoping I could ease any pains, until you went to heaven to meet God. That memory of us both looking into each other's eyes, knowing what is happening is heart breaking. I can only hope that you understood that I was not going to leave your side in those last precious moments that I was privileged to have with you, no matter what the danger was, because I knew that if that was me you would not have left my side either. That is the bond that our Team and Squad had. I won't go into full details on here out of respect, but Mrs. Henry if you happen to read this in the near future, I would like to talk to you about Henry. I apologize for not meeting you in Colorado and hope you can understand that as being Henry's team leader I could not face you because I couldn't bring him back to you. It has taken me a long time of work and not repressing feelings to finally get to this point. I can only hope that you accept request to talk to you, I believe it will be good for both of us. If you don't I completely understand.

I have learned that by talking about Henry and his day to day activities, that it has made it possible to cope with his loss, and above all it keeps his memories alive. Henry you are my HERO and as well as the teams. I truly believe that if things had been just a bit differently there would have been more causalities. You unknowingly saved all our lives and I will forever be great full. There is so much more I want to say but I am going to leave this as is. Mrs. Henry, if you like, please email me at [email protected]. I didn't know how else to find you and figured I could through here. You raised a great Honorable Man and I want to thank you for that.

God Bless,

Hydie Henry

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

No One Can Know

No one can know just what you've lost;
No one can understand the cost;
But when you feel your energy drain,
Please count on me to help ease your pain.

Let me help you cope with grief;
I hope with time you'll feel relief.
We can't replace the one who's gone,
But let my concern help you carry on.

Happy Birthday PFC Chassan S. Henry
You are greatly missed.

To Chassan, I just wanted to say thank you for making the ultimate sacrifice for our country, because of you I make sure that everytime my children see a soldier they tell them thank you. It is because of men and women like you that we are free. Love ya

Hey Baby Bro -

Damn I miss you! So much has taken place since you've been gone and I wish you were still here with me laughing, crying, going through the craziness of life. Without you this journey just hasn't been the same. There is always a void there, it always feels like something or someone is missing and that someone is you and that something is your presence, your smile and all that blazing energy you bring to a room. Today is your birthday big man! Look at you - turning 25 and although you are not physically here I know you are spiritually and I know you can hear me when I talk to you sometimes. Just remember we haven't forgot about you (NEVER THAT) and don 't worry we will be together at the crossroads laughing, joking, picking on each other's head once again. You will get to meet your off the chain nephew (another big head, hahaha) and we will party and make up for all the lost birthdays we couldn't share with you. Until then, keep watching over us and know that we love you always and forever!!!

Your Big Sis -

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Dear Mrs. Henry, Aaliyah, Natasha, and Ms. Tracy

I recently read about the loss of your loved one who was serving our nation in Iraq. May I offer my belated condolences to you all upon the passing of your American hero son, brother, and loved one, Chassan, in February.

Please know that other Americans share in your loss and are concerned. It is my prayer that God may continue to grant you and yours an extra measure of peace, comfort, and strength during this difficult time.

May Chassan’s legacy of bravery and devotion to our country and its safety be a source of pride to your family, an inspiration to his peers, and forever remembered by a grateful nation.

His sacrifice is not unlike those Floridians in times past who gave their all for freedom's sake in places with such names as Perryville, Ardennes Forrest, Normandy, Inchon, and Pleiku.

With deepest sympathy,

Sincerely,

The Eagle Academy

What a handsome man and hero. He gave his life to serve our country and each of us who reside in it. There is no way to thank someone who chooses/volunteers to do that. He made the ultimate sacrifice and the United States of America is forever indebted to him for that.

To the parents and loved ones of Pfc Chassan S. Henry.

WHAT A HERO. My hero, the world's hero. No words, not a hug, a sweet kiss, or any amount of money can easy the pain of your loss. Such a handsome young man doing his best at his job to give security to the ones across the water.

He is resting with the Lord now, but if Chassan could say some words of comfort they might be something like this "don't morn for me to long because I have taken the journey to my fathers home, don't cry rivers of tears, instead thank God for these past years, then Chassan might say I know you are angry because I was taken in such a way as this but don't hate anyone for my death, because my father above took care of me has been with me always, even to my last breath. I'm home now.

Loved ones left behind when I look at Chassan I see 6 of my brothers that served from Vietnam to the Gulf War and by the grace of God they all came back, not all in one peace but they did come back. Just be incouraged to know that God was always by Chassan's side and he was never alone, my heart will be heavy with your heart and my tears will flow as your tears flow. The peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ.Phil 4:7

God bless and keep you all.
