Paul, Every time I am in a miserable situation, I compare it to that cold November Ambush night ambussh battle drill.. the one when you waded into a creek to help the rest of the platoon use a fallen log to cross and the, about an hour later you saying (with your signature giggle after you said it) "hey Westy, my leg are numb, huhuhuh." You knew how to take the sting out of bad situations. I miss you.

i served with sgt. heltzel for a year in iraq. although i never met him personally he will always have a special place in my heart. i was with the 1/69 infantry and was on patrol that same day in baghdad. i've been trying to locate sgt. heltzel's gravesite but am having alot of difficulty. i've made it a personal goal of mine to seek closure from the war by visiting the graves of the brave soldiers who gave their life so that other soldiers could make it home. Sgt. Heltzel, you are a hero to me and i will always look up to.

Paul and family,
I was stationed with Paul in Germany A-CO 3/8 Inf. he was a very vigilant and motivated person in and out of uniform, then was stationed at Ft Campbell KY I lost contact with him after that, when I was archiving Louisiana's best that lost their lives in combat, I was so shocked. It hits home when you know someone that close, he was a good man and an awesome soldier, I am grieving now and pray for the strength for your family to carry on the memories of a warrior of our nation. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I served under SGT. Heltzel from 95-98 10th Mtn Division, C co 2nd Platoon 1/87 Inf. He was my squad leader. I learned a lot from SGT Heltzel- He was a tough, fair leader, a fun guy to be around- was always taking care of his soldiers. I don't know how this could have happened to him.

THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Here we are over a year later and I still find myself thinking of you cousin. I hope you are showing my good friend SSG Blakley the ropes, as he died over there just this past June. When we came back from Saudi after Desert Storm, I think we knew it wasn't over and done with but who could have ever imagined the cost this time. We were so victorious. I still shy away when people call me hero. No I don't deserve that title. It belongs to you and the way too many who proceeded and have followed you. I love you cousin!

I am still in shock to find out that Paul lost his life in Iraq. But I know he died doing what he loved. I first met Paul in 94 when he was here in Watertown, NY. We were best friends from the first day we met. Paul was always there for me when ever I needed him. The last time I saw Paul was in May of 99 just before I moved to TX. I have always thought you Paul and missed our late nights of listening to Peter Frampton and James Tayor. As the song says "I always thought I'd see you again." You will always be in my heart Paul and in my paryers. My prayers go out to your wife and family.

Psalm 23
1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!
My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

I served with Paul in HHQ 2-152 Mech TOC (Columbus) when he first joined the Indiana Guard. I took an immediate liking to Paul who was still attending high school and we worked closely together in our small group of Paul, myself, Bill Bauer, Randy Miller, Terry Blaney, Roger Moffitt, Jim Shedd, Mark Hash and Dean. I was a few years older and tried to pass along all the soldier skill and knowledge I could as Paul was determined to make the military a career. Paul and I shared shelter halves and countless conversations in the Summer of '84 and '85 at Camp Graying. When I was seriously hurt in the line of duty Paul was a source of encouragement right up until I was medicalled out in 1987. I lost track of him went he went regular Army but I never forgot him. I've mentioned him in stories to friends and family for years. He was a great friend and I was heartbroken at news of his passing. My deepest condolences to his wife and son.

My Friend, There is much I can say and much I wish I could have said. You and Your Soul Mate Christy, have always been there for just about everyone who needed your support in someway during the last 7 years. I can't even begin to understand the Loss and Pain she is going through, All I can do is be there for her, as You both have been there for so many. The love you two had, showed me, dreams where possible. Wishes do come true. I am so glad you both found each other. I wish it could have lasted longer. What you both where working on, truly was, what futures are made of. Thank you both for the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you both for being Heroes.
"Idealistically, love comes around once, but to have found it twice, in a life time, simply shows you, God, finally led you on the right path.. and You chose to walk it."

Best friend, confidant, protector, love, and lover. These are just a few of the many words that I use to describe Paul. There will forever be a part of me that aches now that he is gone. Caring, compassionate, dedicated, selfless. These words fit him well. Always looking out for everyone else, making you laugh when you never thought you would again. This was the Paul that I came to know and love when he returned from Desert Storm. Friends, best friends, loves, and lovers we became over the years. Never have I met a soul such as his and I do not believe I ever will again. He was a soldier, respect him. He is a hero, be proud. He gave of himself in the only way he knew how; entirely. His sacrifice for us was the ultimate. Remember him always and “his boys” that still put themselves in harm’s way. Paul, you go from love into love. Carry with you only love. May love carry you and open the way. Until we are all together again
Always & forever, Your Teddy Bear.

Paul you will be missed. I had the privledge of serving with Paul his first go round in the "big sand box." I remember the first time we spoke just before we deployed. I was new to the unit and he simply came over to me and said, "Being the new guy sucks! Glad I'm not you!!" And he began to laugh and then said he was kidding and introduced himself. That was the Paul Heltzel I knew. Always smiling and laughing no matter what. The world is a sadder place without him. My sympathies to his wife, children, family and friends.

Any man or women that serves in the Armed forces of America deserves our respect. It takes more than people realize to pick up a rifle and stand on that wall. With fewer and fewer American's thinking that they have to pick up that rifle, it is even harder when one of those good people falls. May god bless him and his family.

I served with Paul during his first Iraq tour (2003-2004). He was an admirable soldier and a great friend. He was always funny and upbeat. He was willing to impart newer soldiers with his knowledge, and always had a funny story about his own experience handy. The military has lost a great soldier and the world an even better man. I am honored to have had Paul Heltzel as a friend, I just wish I could have known him longer. My condolences go out to Paul's Family and friends. I am deeply sorry for your loss.
I'll miss you Paul.

It's hard to believe that someone like Paul, who seemed to be invincible, is no longer with us. I truly feel that he was where he wanted to be when his time came. My sympathy to his family at their loss. Also, sympathy for those soldiers who knew and served with Paul, for there will be an empty space in each of their lives now. I was proud to serve alongside him, and hope to be half the great man that he was.
