Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Hinz Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Kelly C. Hinz US Marine Captain. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

To the family of Capt. Kelly C. Hinz:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

To the family Capt. Kelly C. Hinz:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

To the family of Captain Hinz;

May I offer my condolences in the loss of your husband, father, brother and son.

My husband and I pass Captain Hinz's headstone on the way to my father-in-laws headstone and for the past couple of years we have "adopted" Captain Hinz and whenever we come to the cemetery to visit our loved one, we "always" place a US flag at the headstone of Captain Hinz in honor of his service to our country.

Kelly,

Once again I've returned from deployment. Once again, Marines still remember you. I was in Bahrain over St. Patrick's Day and ran in to two Marine Colonels - both FA-18 pilots. Our discussion started and ended about you. Both had been on the ship with you that night, and one had been the Officer in charge of watch. They both had tremendous respect for you and miss you immensely. As do I.

To the family of Capt. Hinz,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Kelly, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I know that you don't know me but my cousin was in the marines, he served over in Iraq, and he passed away 2 months ago, please welcome him to heaven, please also let him know that he is very much missed down here.

August 19, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Molly, Abby, and the entire Hinz family:

I think of Kelly often as I load up a pair of skis to go to the mountains, sit in the water waiting for the boat to go, as I work with kids and people on a daily basis, and as I am a father and husband. I miss his smile, his laugh, and the way he truly cared about everything he put his heart and mind to. Reading the entries from people around the United States and World that were touched by Kelly is just a testament to what a great impact he had on the people that knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kelly, it has been about a year since I last wrote to you. I picked up First Lieutenant a month ago and now have two little girls. I returned from Iraq two weeks ago. Not a moment passes that I don't feel connected to you. As a Marine, we are brothers, but our connection with the Milbert Family is uncannily coincidental. In Iraq, I ran convoys and saw some bad things happen. As a battalion, we lost 11 people and had some others wounded worse than you'd ever want to see. Kelly, it made me realize that God wants each of us exactly where we are. I emulate your bearing and miss you immensly, but God must have needed you for some grand purpose. There is something noone can emulate about you; your whole person was amazing. I will spend the rest of my life trying to be the husband, father, Marine, and neighbor you were.

Molly, Abby, Ben and the rest of the Hinz Family: Today is the one year anniversary of Kelly's death. I have attempted to write many times, but have not been very successful. Kelly's death has had a profound effect on John and I. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about your loss. John has the upmost respect for Kelly, both as a pilot and as a father. I guess they bonded on cruise over the feats of 4 & 5 month olds girls. We both take comfort in knowing that Kelly is still protecting his two girls. There is nothing we can say that really mean much, but please know that we will never forget Kelly and Ashlyn will know about the wonderful man that served with her daddy. All of our love.

Kelly and I had 2 things in common. I was his neighbor at his cottage in WI. I to worked on the flight deck in the Navy while enlisted and later recieved my pilots license in civilian life. Dear family of Capt. Kelly, USMC

I did not know Captain Kelly but I knew his father. I was very pleased to meet the Naval aviator that brightened so many of our lives with his restored 332nd Group Red Tail P-51 Mustang.

I certainly cannot convey enough of the appreciation that I had for Kelly's late father. It was certainly a personal blow to hear of the loss of Kelly, who died just as heroically as his dad, just scant months later.

No kind words can satisfy the loss which may be far greater for you than any thousand of us. What you must know is that our thoughts and prayers are strong and with you now.

Kelly,

It's been a little over six months now and I still miss your grin and constant eagerness. Even as a brand-new pilot you showed a lot of promise and I really enjoyed watching you come into your own. I felt we had a lot in common, both having little girls at home waiting for us, needing their father's love and attention. You put your family first, above all else, and I always admired you for that. I've never met a more proud father and I know you watch over Abby and Molly as you always did when you were here with us. You were truely a gifted pilot and one of the most self-less and kind-hearted people I've ever met. I want you to know that Finch, Chik and I watched over your Marines after you left. They missed you terribly. Kelly, I will forever miss flying with you, the late-evening bull sessions and the lively readyroom banter we all shared. You were one in a million, a great Marine, pilot and father.

Molly, Abbey, Milbert and Hinz Families,

It has taken me a while to write down anything after hearing of Kelly's passing over six months ago. Daily, I hear news that breaks my heart; but Kelly's passing was almost too much. Kelly had an impact on all who had the privilege to have known him. He counseled me on the decision whether or not to enlist, and had an impact on why I decided to get commissioned in the Marine Corps. We all know he was a strong moral compass, but let me share with you a couple of occurrences recently that show his impact on the corps (and the world) remain strong. One month ago, I was at the Officers Club at Twenty-Nine Palms. I was halfway through a seven-week training cycle with my platoon supporting CAX (mojave Viper), and it was the first liberty I had been able to grant my platoon since our arrival. Thirstily (and hungry for some chow other than MREs) I headed to the O-Club with my fellow Lieutenants. I ran into a Hornet Pilot (Captain Steve Szepe), and had a beer with him. By and by in a conversation, it turned out, he had served with Kelly's brother. I said I had known Kelly, and Steve said how deeply he had been affected and what a great a man he had heard Kelly was. I assured him that what he had been hearing was true. Tonight was my fifth Marine Corps Ball, a true memorial to all Marines past; which all Marines present and future can attend to thank, honor, and promise such heroes as Kelly. For the first time, I saw a tradition that must be upheld forever. It is a table in the back of the room with a single place setting, complete with a sword and a cover. A place where every guest present can walk by to acknowledge, to thank, and to remember the Marines whose sacrifice was everything. Tonight, as every night, I remembered Kelly. I pray strength for his family. Strength for his friends. And some of his strength in me.

Semper Fidelis,

Doug Pugh

Dear Abby:

Your father was not well known to us personally, but your Grandmother and Grandfather Hinz were treasured friends.

However, from the many media accounts and personal stories of your father that we have read, we know that he was a very special person--a dedicated son and husband, a loving father and a selfless friend.

Moreover, he was a true patriot who gave his life for a noble cause-bringing freedom and hope to an oppressed people. No matter how history may record it, never, ever doubt this.

Abby, dear, we wish for you a happy life, secure in the knowledge that you are truly loved.

Fondly,

Molly,

Ryan and I learned of Kelly's passing just yesterday. We are both still so shocked over the news and extend our deepest sympathy to you, Abby and the Hinz family. Over the last several years, we have thought of both of you often and always had Kelly in our prayers. Kelly was a very good friend to Ryan during the long days and nights at TBS. Our memories of you and Kelly are some of the best ones we have from our time in the Marine Corps. When we moved to Beaufort during Ryan's first (and only) tour, we bought a boat and credited you and Kelly for passing on the "skiing bug" to us. Our friendship that was born in Virginia will always hold a very special place in our hearts.

We were tied in service and now in sacrifice. We will never forget, let us always cherish...

Dear Molly,Abbey,Pat,Ben,Kurt,and Luke

I'm not sure if I can find enough words to describe how deeply sorry I am for the sense of loss you all must be feeling . I know that I will always look at Memorial

Day in a much different light and have a better appreciation for the sacrifice Kelly and all our other military heroes have made to serve this great nation.

I feel truly honored to have met Kelly and his family. It was easy to see why he is such an incredible man when I had the brief opportunity to meet his mother and father one evening at his home, as he needed some advise about some remodeling they were doing. Congratulations Pat and Don for raising not just one, but FOUR fine young men. Anyone who ever met Kelly, as you can see in this book,is keenly aware of this. His love and dedication to his family is clearly evident in the way that he lived. He is still here with you and always will be there for you when you need him, that's just the way he is.

I feel very fortunate to have shared a friendship, and been one of Kelly's waterski partners for the past 3 years. I never saw anyone make slalom skiing look as effortless, which was no suprise when he qualified for the National Waterski Cahmpionships in Mens 2 this August in Florida. This is not easy to do, but Kelly's humble nature would never admit that it was a big deal.I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend many afternoons watching him carve effortless turns backlit by an amber sunset on Mission(impossible) Bay here in San Diego. His presence on these waters will be missed by all of us and I will miss my "ski-buddy" forever.

Throughout these past few years I have seen Kelly as a loving husband, incredible father, and as a friend that would go to the ends of the earth to help others. He did this so thoroughly that he went half way across the globe to defend us and our nation. It is a real tragedy that Kelly will not be able to complete his most importatnt mission as a husband and father to his family. He will always remain a dear friend to me and will be forever missed by everyone who knew him.

Our most loving prayers go out to you Molly, beautiful little Abbey,Pat,Ben,Curt, and Luke. May you find peace in knowing that we will see him again!

.....and Kelly, rip some glassy water for me , wherever you are!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Hinz Family-

We have known the Hinz family for many years and to hear the news about Kelly was absolutely devastating. Reading Fr Ubel's eulogy really hit me because I was that same freshman who Kelly gave attention to. He would give me rides home from school since we lived in the same town even though he was a senior and I was a freshman. If I could be half the person Kelly was I would be ecstatic. I know Ben, Kurt and Luke will take good care if his girls.

Kelly Hinz was an inspiration to all of us. He was an incredibly talented pilot and leader of Marines. But there was something much deeper to this man, something inherently good and right...something everyone could sense. He loved his family unconditionally and with passion. We would sit up at night telling stories and talking about what we were going to do when we got back from cruise. But what it really boiled down to is Kelly just wanted to be with his beloved family, Molly and Abby, everything else was just gravy. Kelly, I miss you Bro. I miss flying with you, working with you, and just being around you. You will be with me forever, my friend. Rest in peace and Semper Fi.

When people ask me about Kelly I respond that he was someone who loved and lived life in the moment. From skiing chutes in Utah, biking in the riverbeds, helping inspire kids and loving Molly and Abby with all his heart he serves as an example for the way we all should live our lives. I remember dropping into a chute in Snowbird after waiting for the tram to go by first so we had an audience (Kelly's Idea). We spent one November day with Kelly assuring Molly and me that it was natural to water-ski while snowflakes fell. One winter day I walked into our apartment and I had noticed that Kelly's truck was on a snow bank with all four tires suspended in mid-air. He calmly looked at me and said "Not a word"; I responded quickly, "Four wheel drive isn't working so well, huh?"

Kelly's smile, fun loving way, and determination were contagious to others and drew people to follow his lead. As a member of the ski team at the University of St. Thomas he pushed his teammates to work hard and often woke them up as he left for a 5:30 am run after a long night of socializing. This determination led our team to qualifying for the college nationals. Kelly unified people. Kelly and I spoke often about our Cretin Derham Hall and St. Thomas Academy experiences. He was so proud of the Academy and his time there. I used to get up at 8:30 in the morning and Kelly would just be coming in from working for Eagle Environmental. I had never met someone who viewed throwing trash while running behind a truck as a workout, but Kelly would laugh about it, took pride in everything he did, and strived to be his best. I remember him talking about the freedom and exhilaration of flying and his love for flight. He passed away doing something he enjoyed and for a country he believed in.

Kelly was a great friend, teammate, and roommate who I will miss greatly. I will never forget the way he smiled when he spoke of Molly and although I hadn't seen Kelly since Abby was born, his love for Abby and excitement about being a father was evident long before her birth.

To Molly, Abby, Pat, Ben, Curt, Luke, and the rest of the Hinz and Milbert family I wish to convey my deepest sympathy; I know there is nothing that can take away the pain and loss to your family, but if there is anything that you need or that we can do please do not hesitate to call. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I want to tell the family that we appreciate the ultimate sacrifice of Capt. Hinz and your family. I do not know any of you, however, we want you to know that this man is our hero. "Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends."
