Family-Placed Death Notice

SGT. MICHAEL JAMES STOKELY Sgt. Michael James Stokely, age 23, passed away, August 16th, 2005, while serving his country in Iraq. He was part of the 48th Brigade, Georgia National Guard, E-Troop-108th Cavalry. He died because of something he believed in. For all the soldiers in Iraq, Mike loved you all and speaking from a mothers heart, I will go on loving and praying for you. I will meet you all one day when you return to your Griffin unit. Thank-you for all that you have already done. Mike will miss you. Mike was born at 10:33 AM on April 19th, 1982, the happiest day of my life. He was so tiny but I knew he would grow into a fine man. He lived with his mother and dad (Bill Gardner) all of his life. We lived in Gwinnett up until Mike was in the 5th grade, then we moved to Loganville in 1994 and this is where Mike called "Home". He loved Loganville. Son, I knew you had a lot of friends but until this, I've had so, so many people that have knocked on my door, that I had never met. I open the door and they say "I knew Mike from such and such," you have touched so many lives as you have touched mine, you were so loved. You had so many homes and one particular is "the Elliott's" (Bill, Nancy, Rachel, Rebecca). Their home was opened to all the kid's in the community. Thank you for taking care of all our kids, we knew if Mike was not at home, he was at your home. He loved you "4" very much. Loganville First Baptist-Rick Bene.. You along with God molded Mike into a fine young Christian man. He was so involved with that church. Through church, Sunday School, discipleship and all the activities. One particular event was at a Super Bowl party, Mike received a Big Black Eye, hummm. What a wonderful place for your child to be. Ronnie Cox- "What a great preacher you are" Mike would say. To all the teachers at church that knew Mike "Thank You". Loganville High School, what a great high school. From 9th to 12th grade. Mike was known by being called "Stokes". I really don't know where to begin_Homecoming floats, football games, pep rallies, etc. Some of the things Mike participated in are as follows: Soccer, Football, Basketball Cheerleader, cheerleading camp at GA Tech, Miss LHS pageant, Sportsman Club, Foreign Language club and Key club. Mike also enjoyed traveling with his friends some of the trips were to Hilton Head, Savannah for St. Patrick's Day celebration and Mexico for his senior trip. Mike's quote in his senior yearbook: On the fields of friendly strife we sown the seeds that on other days and other fields will bear the fruits of victory," General Douglas MacArthur. Thank you to some of the teachers and staff: Sandra Swords, Joel Abbott, Ms. Cloud, Coach Cowart, Mr. Davenport, Ms. Dean, Hank Evans, Tara Jones and Camille Larken. To all of Mike's teachers "Thank You and I love you". Mike, Bill and I and Niki love you so much and God is going to get us through this until we meet in Heaven. God will take care of you and I am not going to say Good-Bye but See you later... Mike was married for only 10 days before he was deployed to Iraq to his high school sweetheart, Niki Yancey. They dated for 2 and a half years and they both loved each other dearly. Their honeymoon was delayed due to Mike leaving for Iraq. Their plans were to live in Loganville and start a family once he returned home. Niki, Bill and I was always have a special place in our heart for you and you are and always be part of our family. I will go on loving you and I know we can't take Mike's place, but we will always be there for you. Mike is survived by his wonderful loving wife, Niki Yancey Stokely of Loganville; Melissa (mom) and Bill (dad) Gardner of Loganville; Robert (father) and Retta (stepmother) and half-sister, Abbey and half-brother, Wesley Stokely of Newnan; uncles and aunts: Richard Michael and Paula Rumsey (Mike's namesake) of Montgomery, AL; Rafael and Connie Dorado of Lawrenceville; Rick and Janet Hamlin of Warner Robins. Cousins: Becky Sabri, Susan Davidson, Barbara Rumsey, Crystal Rumsey, John Paul Dorado, Jason Hamlin, Corey Hamlin, Adam Hamlin, Ronnie McClung and Robert (Clay) Burton; as well as many other relatives. The family will receive friends from 2-4 PM and 6-9 PM Friday, August 26 at Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Loganville. The funeral will be at First Baptist of Snellville on Saturday, August 27 at 2:00 PM. Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 670 Tom Brewer Road, Loganville, GA 30052, 770-466-1544.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I pray that the deep hurt you feel can be in some part be eased by the feeling of great pride for Michael's valor and deep sense of patriotism. He will always be remembered as an American Hero by my family and we will never forget the great sacrifice made by your family.

In spite of all that happened here in New York City that dark Tuesday morning nearly six years ago, millions continue to live and work here without fear, because of our awesome U.S. Military. We still stand tall and proud here today, thanks to wonderful people such as your Michael.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your young Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. God Bless you! I lived in Newnan and Sharpsburg for 25 years and I remember Mr. Stokley coming to my home with a can of stokley beans when he was campaigning for office. I believe your son was with you at that time but he was just a boy then. I am now in Clarksville, Tennessee with my soldier husband who is getting ready to deploy for his 2nd tour after being injured in his 1st. Lauren and Wesley were pals and classmates in the first grade. She remembers Michael being at the house when she would go over and swim in the pool with Wesley, Abby and Daniel Thames. How the years have passed so quickly. Her memory is so clear and vivid of him being a very kind and protective "big brother" type to the whole bunch. She also remembers when he visited us with Abby, Wesley and their Mom came to our house in Peachtree City and the kids played in the golf cart the entire afternoon. What dear memories. I knew Michael through the JROTC program in high school. He was a very motivated man. The best thing I remember about him was not only his smile but his hand shake he had the strongest hand shake I have ever had to shake. I am proud that there are people like Michael, who are willing to answer the call to duty, when it comes. His job is done, and now, we that still survive, owe him a great debt of graditude. Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for a friend. –John 15:13".

For Michael's young wife, don't think that you must live alone, after the loss of your brave husband. I hope that God will send you another wonderful Christian man to complete your life with. To his parents: Keep Niki close to your hearts and when God sends her life partner to her, rejoice in that God has given you yet another to love. God bless and keep you all and one day I will meet with you in Heaven.

I want to extend a few sincere words of sympathy to Michael Stokely’s Family and Friends. I can’t begin to imagine what you are all going through at this moment. The news of Mike’s death brought the war even closer to home for me. Mike’s widow Niki is my daughter-in-law’s cousin, Kristy Smith. Mike gave his life for his country, his family, his friends and their families, and for my family and me. I am very proud of Mike and the other fallen soldiers for their bravery and dedication. To the Stokely Family.

We do not know you personally but your words about Michael certainly makes us feel we know him. For sure, we have missed knowing a great young man. It is obvious that you have reared your son Michael in the ways of the Lord and you gave him all he needed to be an exemplary citizen, and a strong military leader. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you and we will be standing on Hwy. 78 today as you travel to Snellville.

It is only a small way that we can say thank you to you and especially to your son for carrying the torch of freedom to those who never knew freedom. He will not be forgotten by us. My husband Ray served two tours in Vietnam so we are grateful for his opportunity to touch so many lives. There were many in heaven to welcome your son, a hero. We know your heart is breaking but Michael is where he was born to be, although much earlier than planned, smiling down upon each of you.

To the family of Michael Stokely:

Along with my oldest daughter Jill Aaron and her two daughters, ages ten and six, we stood in silent respect along route 78 yesterday to pay tribute to your son Sgt. Michael Stokely. As we looked on, my youngest grand daughter asked why I had tears in my eyes. I tried to explain to both girls how painful it was for us all who stood along the road that day, who came out to honor a fallen hero, your son Michael. I tried to explain that Freedom Is Not Free.

I have just this week returned from the 23rd annual reunion with members who served in Vietnam in my Rifle Company , Mike Co. 3rd Battalion 7th Marines. Each year some portion of the over 714 members that presently make up the M 3/7 Association meet somewhere in the USA to call out each of the names of our fallen brothers and honor them and the sacrifice they paid for the precious freedom we enjoy in the country. From 1965 to 1970 Mike Company lost 198 in combat, each and everyone of them just like your son Michael is special and will always remain in our thoughts and memories.

I was especially moved today after reading the loving tribute to Michael in the paper and reflecting upon the fact that we will all once again be reunited with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I look forward to that day as I know Michael's family does.

There is no greater gift to give that to lay down one's life for another. Thank you for your son's life.
