Mark Dooley Obituary

1st LT Mark Harold Dooley, 27, of Wallkill, N.Y. was killed in action while leading a scout platoon west of Ramadii, Iraq in support of the War on Terrorism. He was born in Midwest City, Oklahoma, the son of LTC (Ret.) Peter C. and Marion W. Dooley. Mark attended Wallkill Senior High School and Norwich Military College of Vermont where he graduated with a degree in War, Peace and Diplomacy. 1st LT Mark Dooley was a member of the Vermont Army National Guard 3/172nd Mountain Infantry, and was activated for deployment to Iraq in support of the war on terrorism. Mark believed strongly in the ideals of the United States Army and had recently completed the rigorous Ranger School and numerous other advanced infantry courses. Mark was an admired lawman in the State of Vermont beginning his police career with the Windham County Sheriffs Department in Vermont where he worked as a deputy sheriff for several years. Dooley,

This morning, I was looking at the picture of you, CPT Heaton, and me at your Ranger School graduation. I was so honored that you asked me to pin your tab. I often look back to our antics at Fort Benning. "BLWS Radio - It blows!" Today, I will eat some Zingers in your honor.

I think of you and your family often. I miss you, my brother. I look forward to the day we meet again.

To the Dooley Family,

I am sorry for the loss of Mark and sorry I have not expressed this to you sooner and in a more personal way. He was a great man and friend.

I attended NU and was placed in Foxtrot Co. with him our first year. He was a great leader and was always there when you needed him.

I miss Mark and think of him all of the time. I am a Police Officer with the NYPD working in the Bronx for the past five years and I can say there isn't a week that goes by were I don't think or talk about Mark.

I am sorry and will never forget the sacrifice Mark gave to us.

Sincerely,

To Col.& Mrs Dooley:

I have unfortunately just learned of your son's ultimate sacrifice for our country. I had the honor of briefly meeting him in my home in Cold Spring, NY in the summer of 2000. He and my niece, Allison (Resides) Condon, who were in ROTC training together, stopped by for lunch on their way between training sites.

When Allison called yesterday, I immediately remembered Mark after all these years - sitting on our back porch, a polite, handsome young man with a great sense of humor. We shared funny stories about Army training - I had gone through Infantry OCS and served in Viet Nam in the late 60's.

My wife Debbie and I extend our deepest condolences for your loss that I'm sure is ever present with you. Words used in military medal citations that usualy read " (actions) reflected great honor on the soldier and the Army" can never come near to describe what your son Mark represented. He definitely was the best this country has and his (and your) sacrifice will definitely never be forgotten.

Mark,

It's three years since that tragic day in Ramadi, Iraq. Heros like yourself are never forgotten and are always in our hearts and prayers.

Today is my daughters first birthday and I have to say that I see a little of Will, Mike, and yourself in her.

She's tough, spunky and always giggling or up to no-good.

A few weeks ago the US Military gave control of Al-Anbar province back to the Iraqi forces. This only came about because of your dedication, selfless service and ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you Mark.

God Bless!

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Mark, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Marion, Pete and Charlie,

Zachary and I spent this past Memorial Day w/e with Alex and Kelly in Boston. I picked Zachary up at Dietz Stadium, on our way to Boston/ Cape Cod.

When in Kingston, I thought of Mark, Alex and the group doing the 4x4, shaved bald heads, and my heart was heavy. All the guys-handsome, smart, on their way to greater times, hearts full. I am so sorry Mark is not here to continue the quest.

Their group was destined to greatness, as your Mark proved.

So many of us miss Mark; high school friends, military friends, security/police firends, friends made along his lifelong path. So many people he touched; a wonderful person they encountered.

God Bless you and your family.

Mark was truly the dearest friend that I have ever lost. He was like a brother to me.

It's moving to visit this page and see so many kind words about him from so many people. We were all lucky to know Mark in some fashion, or for some part of his remarkable life.

Your remarks are testament to the fact that Mark's proud memory will forever be alive in all of us.

To the parents of Mark Dooley;

Much time has passed since you lost your son and you may think that people are starting to forget him and forget his sacrifice. I want you to know I go to to Arlington every year to visit the grave of a dear friend CPT Jeremy Chandler. This past year I didn't leave until I found his grave. It didn't take me long...it was only two rows over. I will stop by and see him every time I'm there. I met him once or twice in college...he had a major crush on a good friend of mine :). My cousin Scotty Mcaughlin was also killed in Iraq. I know his mom went to Marks funeral at Arlington...she didn't have words to describe the emotion of the day. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I thank God for people like your son who have put their lives on the line for the rest of us. My son will grow up knowing that your son is a hero.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

LT Mark Dooley and I did not know each other, but we are bonded as brothers at arms because we both served our country. I will continue to serve with Mark in memory. We are also bonded because we were both alumni of Norwich University, The Military College of Vermont. There is a bond that exists between all Norwich Alumni, and when one of us falls, we all feel the loss and pain. My condolences go out to Mark and his family. He is an example for all to follow and emulate. He definitely lived up to the cardinal virtues of Norwich and served his country with honor and pride as an Army Officer. To the family of Mark and Matt & Gregg,
I went to the National Cemetery at Fort Indian Town Gap, Annville, PA with my 4 year old Grandaughter. A unit from Harrisburg, PA placed almost 4000 flags with ribbons with the names of our servicemen and women lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. I said a prayer for Mark and your family. My grandaughter wanted to know what all the flags were for. I told her that they are there for the heroes. She replied "Are they the good guys?" and I told her "Yes, they will always be the good guys". Thank you for a wonderful young man.

Mark,

This Memorial Day I'll fly a flag on my porch that I flew outside our CP in Ramadi, Iraq. It's been folded since I left Iraq and I will display it today in remembrance of you, Will Fernandez and Mike Egan. Memorial Day will no longer be just another holiday for me, it will be a day that will always remind me of the greatest self sacrifice anyone could ever offer their Country. Although I only knew you for almost three months you made a great impact on me. Your selfless devotion and dedication to whatever was put in front of you was impressive. I look forward to crossing paths again in the Kingdom of Heaven. Maybe then we can play our next ping pong match and maybe you'll beat me this time. You will always be a brother and a comrade in arms.
We miss you.

I met Mark several years ago through his brother, Pete, who was a good friend. He was a genuinely thoughtful, funny, smart (and rambunctious!) young man home on break from Norwich. I loved to watch the brothers be, well, brothers. And I loved how the entire family was so close. When I learned of Mark's death, I was crushed, even though it had been a few years since i had last seen him. I understand his brother Pete is now following in his hero brother's footsteps, now enlisted in the Army. This shows what a true role model he was and still is, and just how much he has impacted the lives of those around him. Mark, even more than a year later, I still think of you. Thank you for serving and protecting us. Thank you, Peter and Marion for sharing your sons with us. May all of God's grace and blessing continually be poured out on all of you as you continue to grieve and honor his memory.

October 22, 2006

To the Family of 1st Lt. Mark H. Dooley:
Your son's name, along with our sons, is forever together on a Memorial standing at Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville, PA. Their dogtags hang together forever moving with the wind creating a subtle sound, like the quiet whispers of the Fallen as they continue to speak to us. Attending this Memorial Dedication and hearing your child's name being read along with ours, has prompted me to sign this soldier's guestbook.
If your child can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 as well and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for right now. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten . You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Please know, on this first anniversary of Mark's Supreme Sacrifice, how deeply sorry I am, for your loss.

As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly,

and as a sister, who has lost a brother to war,

I am aware of the deep and devastating pain, that a loss such as this brings. The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes.

Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.

Ever so softly and slowly, time does heal.

In reading about Mark, there is so much to be proud of and remember. I am very grateful for his Courage, Dedication and many years of service, not only to our Country and for Freedom, but for his service as a law enforcement officer as well.

May Mark Rest Safely, in God's Loving Care and know that he WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

I pray that God's Healing Comfort and Grace will continue to be with you and your family.

I am the sister, of such a Young Hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

Mr. And Mrs. Dooley,

I work in the administrative offices at the Town of Wilmington. Mark was only here in town for a short time, but he made a very big impact on a great many people. I did not know him that well, but he was always so polite and pleasant when he came to the office and you could tell he was a really nice guy.

Mark's death left everyone devastated, especially his co-officers in the Wilmington Police Department. The town mourned not only the loss of such a terrific young man, but also the loss of what might have been had we been lucky enough for him to return to us and continue making a difference in our town through his police work.

Please know that we are proud of Mark for fighting for his country and what he believed in. My prayers are with you and your family.

My name is Liam McNamara. I live in Virginia and attend a military high school there. I recentlly purchased a fallen soldier braclet off the internet. I didnt ask for a certain soldier, and it was picked at random. When my braclet came in the mail it bore the name of Mark H. Dooley. After looking into this soldier I have learned alot about him and would like to express my sorrow to the family of Mark. I will continue to wear the braclet with pride. I will not forget.

As a member of the class of '97 from Wallkill High School, I knew Mark very well. We shared many classes together. He was a great student, person, friend and athlete.

Last week on Oct 21, during half time at Wallkill's home coming game, a ceremony was held in honor of Mark. Though it's been over a month, still today it makes me sad, that we lost one of Wallkill's finest men. Mark will live on forever in my thoughts and prayers.

In memory of

To the family and friends of Mark Dooley:

My husband, William Fernandez, served with Mark on that last day. We are still on the "countdown calendar" that we kept when our dear men deployed - except now we are on God's countdown calendar until we are reunited in heaven. We must never forget the pride our men felt in serving their country, and the pride and love we feel for them. They are in our hearts forever. My prayers for God's continued blessings and peace.

Mark came to be our platoon leader as soon as we arrived in Iraq. He fit right in immediately. In the few months and many missions that I served with him, I knew that he was an exeptional leader and great person. His loss affects all of us and he will be missed. I am deeply sorry for his family and friends. It is hard on us and I can only imagine the pain you feel.

Dooley was an exceptional leader. I had the privilege to train with him on the NU ranger challenge team. He taught me more in a few short months as I can ever hope to teach anyone in a lifetime. I'll never forget those days as the best times of my life. He showed me what perseverance is and I am forever motivated by his words. It was great training. Thank you Dooley for all that you sacrificed. My prays to Marks family.

Mark was an inspiration for all who knew him. Through his letters I know he was truly dedicated to protecting our country. He will forever be my "war hero". As he quoted in his last email- "Rangers lead the way..." and his legacy will continue to lead the way for other soldiers. To Marion, Peter, and Charlie: Stay strong as Mark will always be with you.

Yesterday i took part in the service for Lt. mark dooley. It was a true honor to be able to be a VERY small participant in such a large group of loyal and dedicated friends, family and comrades of a young man who touched so many lives so deeply. Many who knew him and many who did not. The emotion and true love these men, woman, soldiers and police officers and all who knew him was obvious on the faces of all who were there. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you all, family, friends and brother soldiers of such a brave and loyal man, Lt. Mark Dooley.

All of our lives are better and safer because of men and woman like you. The jeffers family
