October 19, when Russell passed, is another Memorial Day when I always remember Russell and our service together with 5/7 CAV near Balad, Iraq, in late summer 2005. May the Nahvi family find peace from the gratitude of our Nation for Russell´s service. Mr. and Mrs. Nahvi, you raised your amazing son, and he became an unforgettable man who continues to inspire others.

Hey Russell, it's weird to say Russell as I am use to saying Nahvi because when we hung out it was always that way in the Army. I knew Nahvi since basic training in the military. We started together in Fort Benning Ga. We clicked right away. I guess because we both have a lot in common. We both loved life and loved helping people as Army Medics. We also both joined the military after 2 years of college to fight for our country. I remember a lot of fun times together like when we went to Florida together and rented moped scooters and road it all around the beach and goofed around. Nahvi was always smiling and so funny. He had this mono-toned funny thing that I just loved. Such an amazing guy. As I live my life and carry you in my heart with me, one of my favorite things about you that I still do today is always try to learn everyone's job. You would always learn what everyone did in the Army (i.e. Cooks Job, Mechanic's job, etc.) because you just were that great of a guy. Always willing to give an extra hand. I love and miss you brother. This isn't a good bye but until we see each other again in heaven. ROCK OF THE MARNE! James Tickal

I spend everyday thinking about you. When we met, I was so bitter for being stuck in the "Disneyland" of Iraq teaching medical classes. I wanted to be back at my FOB. When you rotated in Richard and I were so very impressed with your knowldege and hunger for more. I'll never forget setting the classroom on fire (controlled with hand sanitizer, of course!) to see how you would assess the scene. We had so much fun with you. You are an awesome medic and person. I know you and Richard are running around up in Heaven, training God's army and waiting for us. I'm so blessed to have known you. It hurt so much to hear of your loss. Its unexplainable.. to know someone for so short of time but feel such an intense connection. It was more than just Texas and TCU. You are incredibly special. We were telling the next rotation of 5-7 medics about the fun we had with you... not knowing what had happened. When they told me I ran to the back and just collapsed... I don't and still cant understand why that was the day God called you home.. but I know in my heart there is a reason that someday will be revealed. It took me a lot of time to write... I am still so torn. My husband is up with God too now, and at a Gold Star meeting I mentioned you to a Fort Worth based couple who had lost their son. They encouraged me to reach out. I'm ashamed that it has taken me so long, but you are so very loved and you have touched so many of us. Thank you for inspiring me to be better, and tell Richard to take it easy on the newbies. To your family: thank you for raising such a wonderful man. We all still miss him and will never forget.

Every time i went out of the fence and they assigned him as my Medic, he was there waiting on us with his combatmedic bag. One of his friends told me about a secret place at the warriors walk between holes 4 and 5 at the stewart golf club, where i seat down drink water or something and share a prayer with him and some of my other good friends that are waiting for my time to come...

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Russell, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Hello, I am in the Army National Guard in Louisiana. I just happen to be on the computer tonight and saw they had a memorial for a lot of soldiers. It seemed the words you wrote touched me in a special way about your son. We have had a lot of death too.We lost my Dad from cancer last year and Mom's brother this year from cancer. He lived next door to us and used our phone we were so close. We are trying to put ourselves together after all of this. I pray God will help you in your sorrow as he is helping us. I am so sorry for your loss. I send my love and care even though I do not know you. The greatest thing I can say to you is if he were alive and you had passed he would want you to go on with your live and to be happy. A guy that owned a funeral home one time told me that the family was crying and in falling on the floor. The guy he was in partnership with walked over and said something quietly to them. He asked him one day what do you tell those people. He said I would say your loved one would want you to be happy most of all and to go on with your life. So that is what I share with you. Russell would want you to happy and to go on with you lives and not to cry. Laughter is like a medicine. God really is on your side. It is the devil that causes terrible things. God bless you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I remember the first time and the last time I saw him. Nahvi was a great guy. He knew about my fear of needles but he never busted me out about it. Russ was truly a great person, friend, fellow Texan, and Soldier. I'd known him since our very 1st day in the Army (reception at basic training in Ft Benning) to that fateful night in Iraq. He really was an inspiration to me. He kept me going many times when I felt like quiting and made me smile through some of the worst times. Mr. and Mrs. Nahvi,
I will never forget the day that I first met your son. He was a new soldier who was assigned as our 3rd roomate in an already too cramped barracks room. Your son fit in right away, and he made others feel at ease with him. That was one of his gifts. He was so full of life, and so ready to laugh. He always gave of himself so freely and asked for nothing in return. I offer my deepest condolences and pray that you will find patience and peace. Nahvi will always be missed by his brothers here in 5-7 CAV, but he made us better soldiers and better men for knowing him and for that we are deeply grateful. Your son was a man of honor. Thank you for sharing his life with us and for rasing such a fine young man. I will never forget his sacrifice, or yours. God Bless you and keep you, and may his face shine upon you.

We knew Russell in AFROTC at TCU. He always had a smile and funny outlook on the mundane or ordinary. His positive nature and volunteer spirit always went above and beyond... and for that, Russell will certainly be missed.
To Mr. and Mrs. Nahvi, we are truly sorry for your loss and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

Russell Nahvi is a true hero. I knew him as a cadet in the Air Force ROTC program. He always had a positive attitude and was just a great guy to have around! I am proud to say that I have served with him in our country's military. I will always keep him and the Nahvi family in my thoughts and prayers.

I was in ROTC with Russell at TCU. We became great friends while there. It wasn't the same when he left the ROTC program. I always counted on his hilarious humor to help me make it through the Lead Labs. He definetly made an growing impact on our class. The thing I will remember and miss most about Russell is his fun-loving and high-spirited nature. Thanks for all the great times Russell and thanks for being such a wonderful friend.

I knew Nahvi from college he was always such a pleasure to be around and full of enthusiasm. He was a great man and it is great to see he went on to serve our country. I as well am serving our country and truly mourn the loss that our military has experienced as well as the loss of a friend. Just know that he made a positive impact on many in more ways than one. I never had the opportunity to meet Russell, but know from all the beautiful entries in the guest book that he was a wonderful person. We have been friends of his aunt, Linda Baggett, for many years and know how much he will be missed. Our prayers are with the family and his platoon in Iraq.
God Bless you all.

My deepest condolences to the family of Spc Nahvi. May GOD take you into his arms and into a better place. I cant believe that once again, only a few months ago, i am now back to writing in the guest book of a fellow soldier. Nahvi it hurts for me to hear that yet we have lost another tazmedic. It seems like only yesterday we were in Delta co. giving Vatcher and Cooper a headache with our antics. Its hard to think that every pltn in our company has each lost a soldier to OIF. I thank you and everyone down there right now fighting for US. I am proud to have known such a courageous and motivated person like yourself.

Russell was like a brother to me. He will be sorely missed. I put together a poem for him to express my deep lost and sadness:
Saying Goodbye is never easy
It's the hardest thing to do
But what hurts even more
Is not the chance to say it to you
Yesterday is just a memory
Your laughter was sunny and bright
Then clouds started to gather
For you were nowhere in sight.
You were like a brother to me
And this I will never forget
How you left without a warning
No good-byes, my only regret.
Wherever I may end up
I'll always remember you
As my courageous little Russell
Who fought for his red, white and blue.
I know you are still with me
Your love is within my heart
Though life is no longer present
Our souls will never part.
This is given to you in honor
Of all that we did share
I just wanted you to know, my brother,
How much I really did care.
I will miss Russell so much and my deepest condolences to Nancy, Sam and Nina. We all have a piece of him in our hearts so let's ensure we make him proud by doing great things in this life as he would have wanted.

As Russell's Platoon Leader, I got to see the great person that he was first hand. His commitment and dedication is unmatched. He was one of the most unselfish people that I have ever known and his presence will be missed dearly. I offer my deepest condolences for your loss. He will never be forgotten.

As a two tour Vietnam combat veteran with the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to SPC Nahvi's family for the lose of their son, Russell. From all that I have heard from the men of 3rd Platoon, C Troop, 5/7 Cav., he was an excellent medic and a great friend to all of his fellow soldiers. This country has lost a tremendous asset with Russell's passing, but he will never be forgotten. Not by his country or the men of the 5/7 Cav. I am honored to remain a part of this great unit after 39 years.

Mr and Mrs Nahvi,
I have a daughter who is a M.P. with the 302nd Army Reserve unit in Grand Prairie. She is also a graduate from Martin (2000) and spent a year in Iraq. She is back now and a senior in college. I feel so terrible for you and your daughter; that you will not see Russell become the man you had envisioned. I don't know why my daughter gets to come back and Russell does not. Obviously I am greatful to God that my daughter is back, but I am equally greatful for men and women like Russell who paid the ultimate price. May God bless your family.

Russell was my best friend since I met him in 4th grade. I remeber how we used to ride our bikes together, go camping together, and we even worked together at CompUSA. There are so many countless memories we shared together that I will cherish forever. He shaped the greater part of my life and many millions of others who probably don't know, and I am greatly honored to be his friend. I know he will be deeply missed as I will miss his dearly as well. My prayers to the Nahvi family, may he watch over us and support us, from above.
