DJ..it is hard to believe you have been gone for 12 years now. I see your pictures around our house. I see the items that remind me of you and I cannot nor will I ever put away. You will forever be remembered in my thoughts and my memory. It is people like you who do the right thing and go out to make the rest of us safe while the rest sit and watch and do nothing that makes me still to this day so proud of you. You will always be my hero Dave, forever.

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

Such a great person with an awesome sense of humor. Who would have known what would have followed only a few years later. You are missed by so many. I keep you and your family in my prayers. PFC Martin,
I remember reading about your death in the Edmond Sun nearly five years ago. I have lived in Edmond all of my life and so has most of my extended family. I have a little brother who is currently serving in the Army as well. I simply wanted to say that your ultimate sacrifice has not been forgotten and never will by so very many in your hometown. I did not know you or any of your family, but that does not matter. You will always have a place in my memory because of the sacrifice you have made. My most sincere, deepest condolences and thoughts are with your family and friends as they have to live on without you. God Bless you and yours PFC Martin.
Sincerely,

Lauren Russell

Wow. I am not even sure what to say. I am not even sure if this will be read.David is burried just a few spots over from my mother. They passed away just a few days after one another. Everytime my little brothers and I drive out to say hello to my mother; we say hello to David. It is a learning oppurtunity for my brothers to see what servicemen and women do for them. There used to be pennies spelling your name on your grave. I think my 6 year old brother Dillon is responsible for the destruction of that! As I got on and read about what you did for our country I was overcome by emotions. I will be eternally grateful. Rest in Peace.

DJ.. when growing up I loved the fall with the temps being cooler and knowing the basketball season was right around the corner..now when the temps change all I can think about is the time when you left us and my favorite time of the year is no more. While time has passed, the thoughts of you have never passed..they will never pass. We are coming upon 4 years of that day when you left us and it seems as though it was yesterday..Dave it will always seem like yesterday. While life goes on as they say, it goes on in pieces but not the whole. When you have something you love taken from you life does go on..but it changes..I will love you more every day..take care of Dan the CPL as you always have..

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know David, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

August 16, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Words cannot fully express the sadness that the death of such a loyal and patriotic young man brings. My sympathy goes out to all of his family, friends and fellow soldiers. I met his mom the day before his funeral at Walmart - she offered me words of support (I was in uniform) even in the midst of what must have been the most difficult time of her life. It shows the strength of character and will that was passed down in this family. David's service and sacrifice will not be forgotten and his bravery in support of his country brings nothing but honor to himself, his family, and to his brothers and sisters in arms. May he look down on us with pride........ Blessings to all.

Its hard to find the right words to say in a situation like this. I went to school with David and now I am a soldier myself! My husband is in Iraq along with many friends of mine! I have great respect for every soldier who is or has been there and will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers!! God bless!!!

My sympathies go out to the Martin family. While David was never a close friend of mine, I always saw him in the halls in high school and out around town and even occasionally at UCO and made sure to say hello, to which he always said hello back. I had recently learned that he was in Iraq and kept him in my thoughts. He will be missed. God bless his family in this time of mourning.

David was one of the finest young men I've ever known. He and I met when he worked at Snyder's IGA and I used their on-line ordering after I broke my leg and was unable to shop in the store. He was so kind to assist me with my shopping. He even gave me his cell phone number in case I forgot something on my order.

He had told me about joining the US Army and how proud he would be to serve his country. I knew then he was an exceptional man.

I had just thought about him the afternoon of the evening I heard of his death. I had breathed a short prayer for God to keep him safe, not knowing of his death. He will be greatly missed by all.

Pfc. Martin served with my brother, Spc. Philip Fitts. Pfc. Martin was one of my brother's best friends. Thanks be to God for giving us Pfc. Martin, and I pray for God to give you comfort.

In thirty plus years of dealing with young people, David touched my heart like no one had. I have never known a more genuine person. God bless you all.
