Clinton Newman Obituary

Staff Sgt. Clinton T. Newman was born on July 5, 1979, in Midland, Texas. He was a trained civil affairs noncommissioned officer assigned to the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade, San Antonio, Texas. He died north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee on February 13.

A resident of San Antonio, Texas, Newman entered the U.S. Army as a private in the Delayed Entry Enlistment Program in July 1996, one year before graduating from Pleasanton High School in Texas. After his assignment in Fort Benning, Ga., where he completed both basic and advanced individual training as a Bradley fighting vehicle infantryman in the fall of 1997, Newman's first assignment was with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry, Baumholder, Germany. In the summer of 1998, he earned his combat lifesaver qualification. Upon completion of his overseas service in the fall of 1999, Newman had been promoted to private first class and specialist before beginning his short term in the Individual Ready Reserve. However, in October 1999, he re-entered the Army, becoming qualified as an infantryman. Newman was assigned as an operations sergeant to the 1st Armored Division, Bad Kruetznach, Germany, where he served for approximately 15 months and completed his Primary Leadership Development Course. Newman returned to the IRR in April 2001, and two months later, re-entered the Army Reserve. He graduated from the Civil Affairs Specialist Reclassification Course and was assigned to an Army Reserve special operations unit, the 321st Civil Affairs Brigade, San Antonio, Texas. He deployed with the unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in June 2003 and was promoted to sergeant during this rotation. He returned from Afghanistan in February 2004. In March 2005, Newman completed the Basic Airborne Course, and then redeployed shortly thereafter to Afghanistan with the 492nd Civil Affairs Bn. in Phoenix, Arizona. He was promoted to staff sergeant in June 2005. Newman's military training included the Driver's Training Course, Infantryman Course, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Infantryman Course, Basic Infantryman Course, Basic Airborne Course, Professional Leadership Development Course, the Civil Affairs Reclassification Course and the Combat Lifesaver Course.

Clint's military awards included the Meritorious Service Medal, three Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization device, Armed Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, the Parachutist Badge, and he was named Army Reserve Soldier of the Year in 2000. His posthumous awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Armed Force Reserve Medal with "M" mobilization device and the numeral "2" device, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

His civilian education included attendance at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he studied criminal justice. He took great pleasure in running, fishing and spending time with his fellow soldiers. He was a loving, generous son and brother who was extremely loyal to his family and friends. His strong desire to do the honest and upright thing for himself and others served as an inspiration to his family. We now realize through an outpouring of calls, letters, e-mails and visits from friends both past and present, that he had much the same effect on them. Clint possessed an adventurous spirit and love of learning, and always applied 100 percent of himself to everything he did. It was that adventurous spirit that led him to join the Army. He loved the camaraderie, structure and discipline he found there. He was a true patriot who served his country proudly for nine years. His quick wit, contagious smile and loving spirit will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his father, Fred Newman and step-mother, Debra of Big Spring and mother, Debbie Agnew and step-father, Bill of Pleasanton. He is also survived by his brothers, Robby Newman and fianceé Cindy Paul of Verdi, Tye Newman of San Antonio; maternal grandparents, Paul and Lorena Crosthwait of Kerrville; maternal grandmother, Kawana Newman; step-brothers, Joey Agnew of San Marcos, Brian Agnew of Austin; girlfriend, Julia Conrath of San Antonio; aunts and uncles, Paula and Phil Barron of Kerrville and Tommy and Marilyn Newman of Stanton. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Tom Newman.

Funeral services will be at 10 AM on Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Pleasanton, with burial to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

The family is requesting, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Fisher House, which is a project at Brook Army Medical Center, that provides housing for the families of recovering soldiers residing at the facility. The address for making such donations in Clint's memory may be made to: Attn. Fisher House Manager, 3623 George C. Beach Road, Fort Sam Houston, Texas 78234. With your donation the project managers has asked that persons donating give their name as well as noting for whom the donation is made.

Dear Newman Family:

I want to express my sincere condolences to you in the loss of Clint. I was reading through family letters to Michael Raegan and saw your letter. It caught my eye because I lost my son, Sgt. Clinton Ahlquist, USMC in Ramadi Iraq on Feb 20, 2007. My heart goes out to you. Knowing that our Clints are at peace with no more pain and suffering wrapped in the loving arms of our Saviour gives me some comfort. Your son is an American Hero and I want you to know I appreciate his service to our country.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

It feels unreal that over a year has passed since Clint died. I still think about him alot, and luckily it doesn't hurt quite as much anymore. I guess I have felt a little better because I know where he is now, and it is a million times better than where we are. The whole, "if only things would have been different in some way he would still be here" feeling is gone. I know that he would not have liked me or anyone else thinking that way. I still miss him though. I always will.

Three weeks ago I got to visit Clint's marker for the first time. I believe that the sight of his name on that stone finally made the connection from my brain to my heart, that he was really gone. I cry a lot for Clint, mostly because I wish I would have told him how much I admired him, not only as a soldier but as a person. He had a beautiful soul, one that never held a bad intention for anyone. I respected him because he never settled for mediocrity. He soldiered, worked, studied, and loved with all of his heart. He was a true friend to all that were lucky to truly know him. Any of his friends would tell you that Clint would give you the last cent in his pocket if you told him you needed it. I could go on and on about all of the ways that Clint's friendship has affected my life. I can only wish that my young son can grow up to be at least half the man that Clint's mother raised him to be. I miss him terribly, and pray for his family daily. Love you and think of you so much Newman! I know that you will watch over me.

As the dependent of an officer serving with SSG Newman in the 321st CA BDE in Afghanistan as well as a retired soldier myself, I know the feeling of loneliness and separation that we endure with our soldiers in harms way. I am counting down the days to the return of my soldier. The knowledge that not all of our soldiers are returning home saddens me immeasurably. But SSG Newman did not die in vain- he died serving his fellow soldiers, and was helping to improve the lives of countless civilian citizens of Afghanistan, as well as all of us here at home. I salute his memory and offer ISAIAH 43:1-3 as some comfort to his family- FEAR NOT, FOR I HAVE REDEEMED YOU, I HAVE SUMMONED YOU BY NAME; YOU ARE MINE... FOR I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD.

My family's thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Clint was a good buddy of mine, both in and out of the Army. We were deployed twice together to Afghanistan. He was the epitome of a squared away soldier, and one of the greatest guys and best buddies that I have known. I looked up to him, and could always count on him for advice. It was an honor for me to have him to pin on my rank when I was promoted to Sergeant, because he was the type of non-commisioned officer that I aspired to be; hopeful, dependable, and fearless. He will live on in my memory and that of all who had the honor of calling him a friend. We will never forget him

It is my greatest honor to have known and served with Clinton. I was always impressed with this young warrior. I was so proud of him when he returned as Soldier of the Year. Clinton and I would often e-mail one another from Kandahar to Bomian to keep tabs on the guys on the teams and just to say hello. I will miss you Clinton, but you will be with many of my friends that have left me in Somalia and Afghanistan and joined the ranks of the most elite. God only takes the best for his Army and has a position for you to continue protecting us. I will never forget you Clinton.

I knew him as Spc. Newman, he was a brother in arms. We were the two responsible for the communications systems working for our teams during our tour in kandahar. to Clint I hope you have found peace. To those who knew him I hope that you can remember the good times we all had with him.

I had the honor to serve with Clint on our first rotation to Afghanistan in 2003. We were in charge of creating a Provincial Reconstruction Team in the southern region of Kandahar, the birth place of the Taliban. Clint and I were battle buddies on almost every convoy/mission and we ate a many a mile of dust together. You knew that Clint always had your back when ever the chips were down. His smile and easy going ways often comforted me when I'd about had my limit of fun, or was just pushed a little to far on the edge. As soon as we would get back "in the wire" our team would look at each other, grin, and someone would always yell out, "Whooped 'em again Jose!" after the movie Jose Wales.

I just returned from his funeral late last night in Pleasanton, and his grave side rights at the National Cemetary at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. Many a crusty veteran from these wars shed tears for Clint. Remember over in Afghanistan there is one more empty cot where a friend and brother lay. Pray for his team to keep their head in the game and to all come home safely.

Clint...my brother...until the next roll call...rest easy!

SSG Newman was a superb soldier and a great guy. He was someone who could always be counted on to do the right thing on his own initiative. As a leader, his highest concern was always to take care of his fellow soldiers. I am proud to have served with him. My family and I extend our prayers and deepest sympathy to SSG Newman's family. He is with God now, where I am sure he is still watching out for us.

I only met Clint a few times but I feel like I knew him well because my husband, SSG Frank Carrillo, and brother-in-law, SGT Rick Carrillo, along with many of our friends (SSG John Pfeiffer included) served with him over seas and were close friends with him. I learned so many fun things about Clint just by hearing the guys talk about him. My husband loved Clint like a brother and has taken the loss of such a great friend and couragous soldier hard, as have the other brave soldiers who served with him.

Just remember, God has prepared a wonderful place for Clint where there is no sadness. One day we WILL see him again!

I am so honored to have been able to attend the visitation Tue and the funural/burial ceremony on Wed. I am also honored to have met Mrs. Agnew and Mr. Newman, the two great people who brought Clint into this world. I know you are very proud of your son and you have every right to be! He was an admirable man, soldier and son. I am extremely sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Julia, I know you are in so much pain. Clint loved you so much. I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you as well.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Clinton Newman:

My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young man who gave his life so selflessly. We lost our son 12/1/05.

I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now.
