To the Laird Family,

I was assigned to the 46th ECB(H) with your son during our OIF 05-07 deployment. He was a great guy. Recently, I was reassigned back to Fort Polk in the very same Brigade. Dustin's picture, along with the pictures of our other Fallen Heros, are still displayed proudly in loving and grateful memory. I just wanted to let you know that we have not, nor ever will, forget.

Respectfully Yours,

I still find myself thinking about you everyday. I was telling stories about how well our team got along. The songs you would play outside my room when we first got to TQ and the impressions you could do. I have many sad memories of our time but I find peace in knowing I have videos and pictures of the many good times that we all shared. I may not have known you as well as so many others did but you are forever and always in my heart.

In Memory of Dustin Daniel ~ (Debra Estep)

August 2, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Dustin, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I didn't know you Dustin, but I know your Daddy now. They are doing a bridge dedication in your honor. You have your own piece of this great Country that you fought and died for. It's so sad reading what everyone wrote about you, but it makes me smile reading how much everyone loves you. We'll be there Friday!!!

This world will go on will sorrow,
because you are gone from tomorrow.

August 6, 2007

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I want to say that it's because of Dustin and many of the other fallen soldiers, that we're able to sleep at night safely. People don't realize how bad this war really is until they see the effects of it every day...unfortunately, I see it. Me & Dustin weren't very close but he was a friend and there when you needed him. He's one of my heroes and always will be. My prayers are with the Laird family!

We have not the words to express the love nor the loss we feel for our nephew Dusty. We missed a lot of his childhood and it wasn't until he became a teenager that we got to know him well. Dustin showed up at the front door one day and announced he had come to visit and get to know us. It was great. After that he was a fairly frequent visitor at our place. Sometimes he came to fish in our pond or just visit awhile. One of the things I loved most about him was the way he made up his own mind about things. Dustin loved people and they loved him back. Dustin was a hugger and he gave the best hugs in the world. When Dustin hugged you, you knew he cared about you, you could feel the love. We never parted that he didn't wrap those long arms around me ,give me a big ole hug and a smile and say "I love you Aunt Carol". He hugged his Uncle Roger the same way. He cared about all his family and friends and he wasn't afraid to show it. Catchalater Dusty Dan!! Till then....
Love Always

I don't think I could put into words all the things that describe Dustin. He was more than a brother, son, and friend. He was a person that just simply touched everyone he knew. I can remember all sorts of things that he did. Yes, he was a hero for the things he has done for our country, but to me he was a hero long before that. He always took my brother, Ashton, under his wing. He hated seeing my brother picked on.So I wasn't surprised when Dustin took it upon himself to be my brother's protector whenever he could. For that, he was my hero. He will be missed by everyone that knew him. His kind heart and gentle soul will always remain in our hearts.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

January 30, 2007

well i cant say that i had the pleasure of getting to know dustin the way a lot of people did. from what little time i was around him i could see he was an amazing person. also that he was not like anyone else i had ever met before. the things i never got to see for myself were painted like a in my head by his little brother and sister and also by the rest of his family & friends. Along with all the great men and women who have fought for our country in the past years and in even wars in the past, Dustin Laird will always be consider a hero in my heart. To those that knew him a lot more than i did, i know that he is looking down on you like and serving as your gardian angel. When times get hard and you feel as if no one else is there just remember that. && God Bless.

My heart goes out to a loving family. The family of Dustin Daniel Laird a.k.a. D-Money. I remember Dustin like an older brother that I never had. For one his sister Heather was always like a sister to me. Whatever reason it was this family always made me feel as if it were my own. Mr. Billy was like the father I never knew and Ms. Linda a second mother. The best advice I have ever received from anyone was from Dustin. He told me to take my own advice and to do what I felt in my heart was right. That right there is priceless and I will treasure the good things he has done for all of us. I will never forget.

First, you should know that I met Dustin through my friends Wes and Sarah. He and Wes were two peas in a pod, and although I didn't get to know him as well as I would have liked too, it is easy to understand why he was so loved. Having now met more of his friends and family, it is very evident to me that Dustin was a wonderful person who cared about them all very much. He also cared about what he was doing. I teach at Ridgemont Elementary. Last year there was a class of fourth grade students that were writing Dustin while he was overseas. When he was home in May for Derek's graduation, he stopped by and saw them. It was a surprise, and they were happy. Because of Dustin, my current students know what a real HERO is. They know that you have to stand up for what you believe in and he did. He will be greatly missed.

I know of Dustin through a very dear mutual friend. It seems obvious to me that before becoming a hero for us all, your Dustin was a personal hero to many. I didn't know him personally, but truly believe that I will meet him in Heaven.
I don't have words enough to express the sympathy I feel. I cannot begin to feel the depth of your grief. I can only pray that you all will allow God to send you Comfort in the Holy Spirit.
I wish you all the Peace of Christ.

Dustin...was there anything people could not love about this amazing example of a brother, son, and friend? I saw him as The big brother I always wanted to have but instead I got to be one. All I can do now is stand in awe of my true hero and tell my brothers and fellow soldiers of a great man and soldier I once knew and how he gave his all in the midst of the storms of battle. He showed true courage and lived life to the fullest. You are always around and we will treasure you with us for all to hear of your love and kindness. We'll be seein ya...

For me to put Dustin into words would be an impossibility.Impossible to put into words the sound of his infectious laugh and the pausing stutters that came out of his mouth when his ideas got ahead of his speech, the sounds he made playing his bass when he thought no one was listening. But one thing is for certain for all who had the pleasure of knowing my friend, his smile transcends time. Everyday I think of my friend and try to remember things he did for me and others and I'm amazed. I was afraid that these memories would eventually run out because I can't make more, but then I realized thinking of all the people Dustin met in his life thats logically impossible.. like putting my friend into words.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Sgt Dustin D. Laird, with a multitude of Thanks for this Hero's Service and Dedication to our Country and for our Freedom.

Rest Safely Young Hero, in God's Mighty Hands and know that you shall NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

May God's Loving Grace and Comfort be with the Laird family.

I am the Sister of such a young hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

Hoping you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today, as this Country mourns with you, for someone very precious to you, who is a Hero to all of us.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee.

Psalm 55:22

August 15, 2006

I was proud to be part of this young man's funeral. This was my fourth such mission with the group called Patriot Guard Riders.

It was an honor to be there. Hearing the story of the incident surrounding his wounds, I was amazed. Hearing folks tell us about him, I was not amazed after all.

There are no words to dscribe what these missions do to me. I am usually emotionally drained for days afterwards. Yet, I still ride on. The mission is important, family members need to see our support. We had 224 bikes and appx 20 vehicles.

I am so proud to have been able to salute a hero. I have thrown four salutes in the months (18) since retiring. All have been for west TN soldiers KIA. Service rivalries are set aside and I will continue as long as I am able to support the PGR with my presence.

I have a sense of honor and purpose and I thank all locals who worked with us to keep us safe, everyone who thanked us and especially Dustin's family for allowing 250 or so strangers to come and honor him. PGR will always ride with respect.

I pray my last mission is my final mission.

Mr and MRS Morell, I wish the PGR had been around for you. Please accept my sympathies as well. It was an honor to meet you at the Martin PD Sat morning sir. I was the shorter of the two.
