I was with Sergeant Digend in Khost, at the mission , we used to play a game called "7 Stones" together. He would say that the one who can stack the 7 stones faster than the other would win. Our duty was in the Khost province, in the village of Spira near the Pakistan border. We had just met, and he showed me pictures of his children. He said, "I love them so much," and tears welled up in his eyes. Then he laughed again and said, "I'm happy that they are still with me." He was translating these words for me.
Captain Haiz, Digend, and I, along with 10 soldiers, set out to capture a high mountain. But on our way up the mountain, we fell into a Taliban ambush. I sat beside him along with an American officer who was also wounded in his thigh and right ear. We all retreated, and later I went to find his body. My heart sank for him, as we had just become friends, but so much blood had flowed from his neck.
He will always be in my mind, and I wish that one day I could come to America and talk to him by his grave.
Rest in peace, my dear friend.

While I was there I saw braclets with soldiers names and I came across MSG Deghand's name and wanted to honor him and his family. Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Lisa and kids,
I can't believe it will soon be two years since Bernie passed. I had the privilige of deploying with him, and as like so many others, my favorite memories of Bernie will be how he made us laugh. He had a wise crack for every moment, yet his professionalism was beyond reproach. Not sure you have heard this, but at TF Phoenix, before we deployed, Bernie, CPT T Danderson and I spent an evening at the MWR playing ping pong. Like everything else he ever tried he was a fierce competitor at the ping pong table. Anyone that knows Bernie can imagine the laughs we enjoyed watching him working up a sweat making sure he beat the crap out of us at the ping pong table!
As a father, I also know how deeply he loved his family. When you came to visit prior to our departure at Shelby, I will never forget how tightly his baby girl clung to his neck. Daddy had been gone for a few weeks and she wasn't going to let him out of her sight for a minute. I thank the Lord you had the opportunity to come see him that one more time. The hours you got to spend weren't long, but I know Bernie made the best of them.
He will never be forgotten, especially by those that had the privilige to serve with him.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the Deghand family: My thoughts and deepest prayers have been with you. My name will probably not ring a bell, but I had the privilege of doing several PartyLite shows for your family quite a few years ago. I always enjoyed them so--your family was very special--the bond was so evident. I remember the guys hanging around and the loving chatter and teasing that went on with your family. You all probably weren't aware of the impact your family had on the people you came in contact with, however brief--but it was so heartwarming. I pray God's arms will circle each of you and comfort you in a way that only He can.

Dear Lisa,
You were very brave today!! And Emma was just so pretty. What a wonderful reminder of the love you and Bernie shared.
Bernie's memorial was the most incredible showing of love and support I have ever witnessed. The hymns you chose were beautiful ... On Eagle's Wings is my favorite!! I hope you find comfort in knowing that Bernie is sitting in the palm of God's hand right now ... and he is smiling down on you and the children. Bernie will watch over you always. Treasure your memories. Bernie will live in your hearts ALWAYS! May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.
My most heartfelt condolences,

Today I was honored to once again be in his presence and see him off for a last time. The response from the community and those in attendance was heart-felt and immediately tear-bringing.
The hardened, soft-handed, knowledge-before-action, 'completely sarcastic, yet serious at time of business', style of leadership is something that I will never forget from the time I had with Bernie as my gun chief in C1/127thFA.
I will never forget the mentorship I had while serving with him and many others during that time.
That "leading by doing" mentality will forever be with me and I thank all that were a part of his life that gave him the chance to be a part of mine and MANY others.
My prayers are with the family and all those that feel the loss of such an amazing Husband, Father, and American Hero.
Thank you Bernie for being a part of all of our lives in life, and now in passing.

To the Deghand family,
My heart was saddened when I heard the news of Bernie's passing. Your family has been like family to me since I was in high school. It is my hope that God's peace will lighten your heart at this very sad time but also that he will bring you joy to know how many lives Bernie touched. What a great son, brother, husband, uncle, nephew and friend Bernie was to his family and friends.
Bernie gave of himself just like Jesus did and asked for nothing in return.
I thank him for giving me the chance to live in peace in this great United States. You should be so proud of him as I am.
God be with you today and always and know my thoughts and prayers are with you everyday.

Dear Deghand Family in the Lord, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of MSG Deghand. He was truly a remarkable person, full of energy, character and love, but most of all love. I remember how he could make all the soldiers laugh. I remember seeing you all together as a family at Camp Shelby, MI before we deployed, and how this great man of iron nails and courage could be humbled at the site of his family. I remember seeing you all together, and this gave me peace to know that Bernie was deeply loved by his family and his fellow soldiers beyond what human words can describe. We all will deeply miss Bernie. We have taken a great loss, and heaven has been given a great gain. We will continue to pray to our Lord to bring you all comfort and understanding in this time of berievement. In Christ

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Our thoughts, prayers, hearts and love are with you, Bernie's family and friends, in this your hour of loss. About ten years ago or more, he told me in the store one night, "You should have been with me today fixin' fence." A year or two after that he was on the crew that poured the foundation of our house. A few short years later we would see him at basketball games at Royal Valley, always playing with the kids and smiling! Recently, we didn't see him at the games or around town. He had a greater mission. Seems like we never have that time to spend with those we truly should until they are gone. I know in my heart that Bernie has gone on to that great mansion that God has prepared for us and we will join him there. He'll have that grin that was so common for him. Just be aware that he might have the sheet on our beds folded double! Well done Bernie you good and faithful servant! God bless you and keep you! And may the Holy Spirit comfort those of us left here, feeling the pain of your loss.

Our deepest sympathies and gratitude to all of the Bernie's family. We didn't personally know Bernie except thru our daughter's mutual school activities with Jami. Every time, Bernie entered the gymnasiam a certan 'awe' entered as well. Someone spoke of how proud and contented he looked the day of Jami's graduation and I would have to agree -- I felt the very same thing when I noticed him watching her as he held his new little daughter in his arms.
May God's grace be with each of you now and in the days ahead and always know he was a great man -- not only for his family but for his country. In deep appreciation, we offer our prayers and condolences.

Lisa and family:
I work for your eye doctor and although our contact was professional, I was always impressed by Bernie's committment to serve our country. It seemed like he was always getting ready to go back to do the job he was called to do. I even mailed contacts to him in Louisiana. I cannot understand why or offer any words to make you feel better, but I am so grateful to you and to Bernie for his love of this country and the sacrifices you both made to protect me and my family. He will not be forgotten and I am thankful that I can say I knew this man. My prayers are with you at this time.

MSG Deghand was always our go to guy when we needed to get things done. Bernie had a long career and touched the lives many troops through the years. He had a very big heart and thought the world of his family, he spoke of them often. He will be sorely missed. Our prayers are with him, Lisa and his family in their time of grief. I held the cordon for your final walk to the bird that would take you home. I think of you daily. Rest well my friend. 1SG Kober 1/201st RCAG AFGH

Dearest Lisa, Jami, Emma and Craig. What a great person we all have lost. No words can ever express the sorrow we feel at our home. Bernie was Ben's first football coach at the age of 6. He will forever be in Ben's heart as an example of loyality, trust and honor. How lucky all of the Deghand family is to have had this man in their lives. We will all miss him very much. J. and I look forward to many years of being neighbors, friends, and watching Ben and Craig attend school together. God bless all of Bernie's family at this most difficult time.

Our deepest sympathy to all the Deghand family. We moved out of state so the last time we got to share with Bernie was at Michelles wedding. We will dearly miss that mischievous grin of yours, Bernie! Forever touched by your spirit and love for life, forever thankful for your friendship, forever greatful for your sacrifice. God Bless You.

Bernie Deghand Family,
I phoned home from overseas were I am currently serving, and was saddened to hear of the loss of Bernie through my conversation with my wife. He was such a wonderful person and friend that I have known the past 20+ years even though it has been a few years since we last spoke to each other. I had worked with Bernie in the early 1980's, and it was then that I had talked him into joining the National Guard unit in Holton where I had him placed under my command in my squad during our time together there. It was a pleasure working with him at both our civilian job and the unit. He will be sadly missed by those who were touched by his laughter, joking and smile. I and my wife's thoughts and prayers are with you, the kids and the family at this time of your valuable loss.
May God Bless You All.
Sincerely,
Will Hogan

Michelle,
It has been a long time but when I read of Bernie's passing it took me back to Mrs. Parker's class at SHS, remembering all the stories you would have to tell about your mom & Bernie, and I remember when I met them at Barb's 1st wedding I could tell the bond that you all shared. Time has gone so fast, it is hard to believe that Jami is a 19 y/o woman now. That is unbelievable.
No one will ever figure out why stuff like this happens, but we must believe it was god's will. I know you, your family and Bernie's family are very proud of him as he did sacrifice everything for our country & freedom. There are not enough words to express what that means to everyone who will read his obituary, rather they knew him or not. Always keep him and your memories in your heart & he will always be close by.
I hope you are doing well, and I will look forward to seeing you at our 20th HS Reunion next year.
Love & Friendship Always,
Kelli (Gruber) Munsell

Bernie was the most persistent person I have ever known in my life. He was persistent in his love for his family, especially his children, daughters Jami and Emma and stepchildren Michelle and Craig. He was persistent in his everyday life and always achieved his goals. He was also persistent in his career as a soldier, until he made the ultimate sacrifice. Bernie was solid as a rock in so many ways, and he will be deeply missed by all. I am sure that Bernie was right with God and now although still persistent, he is also perfect, in heaven. May all who loved him take comfort in knowing that he is in a better place.

Words can't express the sorrow I feel for everyone that knew Bernie as I did. He was a wonderful man, true soldier and loved his daughters (Michelle, Jami and Emma and his step son) very much! The last time I saw Bernie was at his daughter (Jami's) graduation. I have NEVER seen him so content. There was a sense of peace that I saw in his eyes that day, as he held his baby in his arms and was smiling from ear to ear b/c of the celebration of his daughters graduation. I could see how very proud he was of Jami that day. That is the Bernie I remember and will always remember. God Bless the Deghand family. May strength be with his wife, Lisa, through the trials she is going through. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

I'm extending my condolences from Iraq and from deep in my heart. Bernie was not just a brother in arms. He was a friend. He and I had very similar lives and our paths crossed in 2002. We both deployed to Bosnia. The friendship blossomed from there. I consider him a friend because he was someone I could trust and rely upon. He was always available for anything you asked of him. Very much like the mission he was on at the time of his untimely passing. I'm sure he was as committed to the betterment of others in a foreign country as he was back home.
I wish I were home to help in the enormous task of filling the void he is leaving. I will miss him as he always seemed to have a means to make a difference in your day. If there is anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to contact me.
God bless the family and friends of my friend.

Lisa, Uncle Ray, Aunt Barb and others, please accept Janelle, Lance, Alexa and Angel Daegen’s sincere sympathies for your loss. I am sure you are all proud of the life Bernie led and his dedication to serve. Even though we understand your loss we can’t put into words how much grief we feel for all of you at this time. We don’t understand why God has chosen a select few to pass to God’s world. We try to remember that once they have passed, they have peacefully entered into God’s kingdom and are in a place we all strive to be some day. Bernie is still proud of his family and will continue to be an inspiration to all of you. Try to lean on the strengths when your heart experiences emptiness. Try to hear his voice or see his smile when you miss him the most. We are proud to call Bernie family and are honored to know him. Bernie, keep your family close and always be that beacon of light they will need to get through the difficult days. Show them signs you are watching over them. Let them know they are not alone. Your heroic life will not be forgotten and will always be honored. God Bless You all.

To a true American Hero, SFC Bernie Deghand, age 42. I am Bernie’s Uncle and as a 22 year military veteran and now a military Retiree who has gone and returned from Operation Iraqi Freedom, I would like to say that Bernie is truly an American Hero to both our country and to our family. I would like to say thank you for all the Guest Book entries on this web page. Bernie was definitely blessed to have so many good friends and family members who loved him so much. This is such a grim reminder of the sacrifices that military families make on a day to day basis to protect this great country of ours and our families. My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Deghand and Groves families. Words cannot begin to describe the shock, pain and sorrow that we all are feeling right now. As I get ready to fly to attend the funeral, I want to say god bless Bernie, a true American hero to his country and definitely a hero to his family. I would also like to say God Bless Lisa and the children who are do devastated right now. Lord, please take them under your wing and watch over them to ease the pain. To Bernie: I love you and will miss you. You are a better man than I will ever be. I know you are standing in heaven beside my mother and with Michael. To Lisa and family, remember the good times, take comfort with God and take it one day at a time. Bernie will always be with you.

Bernie, I just wanted to let you know even though you weren't my biological father I always knew you loved me just like I was. My real father wasn't really around during my teenage years and I am just so grateful that you were there to take his place I always thought of you as my father. I will do everything I can to make sure Jami grows up to be the wonderful woman you would want her to be. Jami is so much like you in many ways I am so proud of her and I know you were too. I know you are in a better place now but it is just going to be so hard to imagine life without you. I hate that my youngest daughter and son will never know their grandpa Bernie as Emilee did. I will miss you so much and I am so very proud of you. I love you!!!

Bernie will be missed so much by so many people whose lives were touched by him, even some he would have barely known. He was a great friend to my brother, who served with him for many years, and to so many others who are scattered around the globe and are shocked and saddened by his loss. I thank him and his family for his supreme sacrifice and for being such a great person and a loyal friend to so many. I hope his children will always know the kind of person their father was. My thoughts are with you.
