Joshua Watkins Obituary

WATKINS Corporal Joshua Charles Watkins passed away October 21st, 2006 as a result of injuries sustained in combat in Iraq. He was born April 8, 1981 in Jacksonville, Florida and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1999 graduate of Allen D. Nease High School and attended the University of North Florida for 3 years before enlisting in the Marine Corps. He was a true patriot, serving his second tour of duty in Iraq when he was killed while on patrol outside Fallujah. He loved this country and was proud to be a Marine. He had recently attained the rank of Corporal and had also been promoted to the role of vehicle commander, making him responsible for his Humvee and all of the men in it. He was a member of All Souls Anglican Church and a beloved son, grandson, nephew, cousin, fellow soldier and friend. Corporal Watkins is survived by his mother, Amy Watkins Vazquez; father, Charles Watkins; grandparents, Gail Tillis, George W. (Muriel) Tillis, Charles L. (Ruthann) Watkins; uncles, Dave (Judy) Tillis and Wayne "Biff" Tillis; cousins, Ashli, Austin, and Griffin Tillis and best friend, Sam Spearl and his wife Christy, and their son Ayden, to whom Josh was Godfather. Josh was an outstanding young man to whom family and friends were everything. He was good to his mother and had a special bond with his grandmother, Gail. He loved his cousins as if they were his sisters and brother. The family will receive friends this morning, Friday, October 27 between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at Hardage-Giddens Mandarin Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd. A memorial service with full military honors will be held Friday October 27, 2:00 PM at All Souls Anglican Church, 10679 Old St. Augustine Road. I'm sorry I forgot to sign in yesterday.

But God works in odd ways.

Yesterday morning I had to drive to the south side of my city. There was a billboard on the side of the highway with the picture of a soldier, and a public service announcement. But I couldn't see all of it due to the trees. And I thought about you, and the first time we "met". Was that you saying "Hi. Please don't forget me."?

No, you'll never be forgotten. People you didn't even know think about you all the time.

Semper Fidelis, Cpl Watkins.

Josh, I have just come back from deer hunting. Of course, it is just my way to get out and sit by myself and not really looking for deer. It' just my way of relaxing and get away from it all. But, I was thinking about the time you and I went that first time for you. It brought back fond memories. I really miss you and no doubt the whole family does.
This year, most of our combat troops have come home, and how we wish you were home. But everyone needs to know because of your sacrifice and those others like you, you did obtain what you said you wanted. "Iraq wants freedom and that is why I believe in what I am doing". Well, you and others gave them freedom.

We will never forget you Josh, you are always in our hearts and minds.

May God Bless you and our family. Love Uncle Herb.

My Dearest Joshua,

Everyone says that with time, it will get easier. This is my fourth Christmas without you....it does not seem to me that it will ever get easier. I truly do not know how to live a life without you in it. I guess just one day at a time, as I have been doing.

You have been and always will be the joy of my heart. You are such a precious spirit and I count it a blessing and a privilege to have been chosen by God to be your Mom.

I can not wait until we are together again in Heaven. No more tears then, my love. I love you so very much, Mom.

It is Christmas Eve 2009. The year has been tough on lots of Americans. I read an article today by D. Barone on Espn.com about Christmas and standing in line and realizing that many are giving up much more and cannot be with family. It made me think of Josh and what he and his family have sacrificed and how people don't have a clue on what truly matters.

Josh was a courageous, honorable, and humble young man. He has been and will always be missed. Having served in the Armed Forces, I know the brotherhood that exists. My family and I try to keep in touch with Amy, and visit when we are in Jacksonville. We can thank her for who Josh turned out to be.

Merry Christmas Josh and I wish you could see how much people care about what you did in your short life.

I always thought of you as a brother although you were my brother in law.

Godspeed.

Josh, I'm late with this. I meant to be here on your birthday but we remembered you on that day. Uncle David and Griffin were here and we were talking about you and rememembering you and how we miss you so very much. Josh, you are always in our hearts and mind. I have started to put a book together about all of the family who served in the military and also those that were important to the family. I hope to be able to finish it within the next year. But I have found more of the family who served our country. I just sticking to fathers grandfathers and uncles. So it is taking more that I had figure to do this but I will one day. Having said this, I have found out that you are in great company up there. We have a very proud family of military relatives. More than I realized. I know you are just fine but we sure do miss you. It feels good to write to you because I know you have a way to know what we say, feel, and write. So, Josh we love you and God Bless you. Uncle Herb. PS, I found out about the truck. Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joshua, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear Josh, as you stand guard at heaven's gate, we remember you and honor your name. I want to give you my personal thanks for protecting my family and me. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten and it was not in vain. You were semper fidelis to God and country. As it says in God's word: "There is no greater love than one who lays down his life for a friend." May God watch over your family and friends until you meet again.

Long before facing Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima sands,
A group of warriors arose, a brave and hearty band.
Trained and learned a special art, both on land and sea,
They did because they were patriots, and for the likes of me.

They didn't ask 'why must we die for a purpose ill conceived?'
They go to protect our citizens from mortal threats perceived.
With a sword and musket, they honed their skills so well.
They learned of discipline and the tolling of the funeral bell.

The Bible tells of love supreme -of a life freely given.
A man willing to give up His own life, so we can go on living.
His work was done; He agreed to pay the price for all.
Inspired the men who serve today to heed our nation's call.

Trying tasks which they embrace with faith as strong as steel,
Courage, duty, and honor rule; their brave hearts are revealed.
Whenever our country calls for men to go to great extremes,
One force is called on first to lead, the United States Marines.

If danger looms, our best will rise, I hear their solemn creed:
Call on us! Semper Fi! The United States Marines.

It's been over 10 years since I've seen Josh, possibly as long as 15, but I still remember him as a happy, honest, and enthusiastic friend. I was very sad to just now learn of his passing in Iraq. I met Josh at KinderKare when he was just in the second grade in '89. We went to Julington Creek elementary together and then to Nease High School but weren't in the same grade so seldom saw each other in later years. His family, friends, and fellow servicemen have lost a wonderful young man, and my thoughts are with his loving family.

Josh, today will be a year since we lost you. We think of you each and every day. We miss you so much. We didn't get to see you as often as we wanted. I wish we had lived closer. We always enjoyed your visits.
It is those visits that I really realized why GOD chose you so early in life. You always had a smile, always saw the good in everything. Remember when the boys, Stacy and Brad would tease you and I got on to them. You told me not to, that you liked it and knew that the boys cared and loved you. I remember the time you came up and were in uniform out of "Boot Camp" and you told Stacy, O.K. I'm ready to take you on. Stacy said, "I don't think so, it was fun when you were a boy, now you are a man, I have a lot of respect for you now Josh". We all did Josh.

I remember the time when you visit and you were soon going back for your second tour. We talked about the war. What really struck me was what you told me then, "Uncle Herb, I need to go back, what people don't understand, is we need to fight this war there and not here. I'm there because of Mother, Pop's and all my family. For you, Aunt Harriet, Stacy and Brad and Uncle Duke". Boy, did that ever mean a lot to me. That day, I had more respect for you than I ever had for anyone.
I know why GOD chose to take you to him and I don't question that. But we really miss you. Now you are GOD's warrior.
I read this some where, it is fitting. "And in the end it's not the years in your life that counts. It's the life in your years. You have certainly made you life count for GOD.

As I said Josh, it has been a year since once again our chain has been broken, now nothing seems the same but GOD calls us one by one and one day all the links will be joined again. We love you and miss you each and every day Josh. You are always in our hearts and thoughts.

GOD BLESS YOU

Uncle's Duke and Herb, aunt Harriet, Cousin's Stacy and family, Brad and family.

1st my deepest sympathy on the loss of your son. There was a 9/11 memorial ride for fallen warriors held in Williamsport, Pa. We were the fortunate riders to receive a card with your son's name, rank and hometown that we carried on our person during the ride. It was a very moving experience and was attended by 1000 motorcycle riders.
We would be glad to send the card to you if you would like it. Joanne & Skip Leonard [email protected]

Althea, I was so moved by your tribute, to Joshua but also to all who will give their lives for their country.

I would like to get in touch with you, if you would please email me. Thank you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I have seen your photo on that billboard on I-295 for some time now. This time, I remembered your name. I went on-line and saw your guest book and all its great messages for you. As an American, thankyou, for your service and sacrifice! As a Marine veteran, Ooh Rah and Semper Fi, Marine! Thankyou for your love of country and your undeniable patriotism. We both know why you wanted to serve your country and why you wanted to do it as a U.S. Marine. We are a special breed, the Marines. Like our hymn states, you are definitely in heaven guarding those "pearly gates". On this Mother's Day, I would like to say Happy Mother's Day to your mom. Thank you, Mrs. Watkins, for Joshua. Well, Joshua, fellow Marine, you will not be forgotten. We WILL get the job done over there! Now you are on the "watch" from above, looking down on your family and fraternity of brothers. God bless you, man!

Joshua, you are the joy of my heart. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Today you would have been 26, I miss you so very much. I so wish that I could have taken that bullet for you. You were so very full of life! You have always been such a blessing to me. Thank you for your convictions and for fighting so that I and others can be free. Freedom isn't free, dear one. You and I have had to pay a heavy price.

To Amy, Gail and family,
My family thinks of Josh every day and you all are in our prayers every night. Today is Easter and Josh's birthday. We miss him dearly. I can see Josh up in heaven
hiding eggs for the children that are around him. I see his handsome smile. He is busy up in heaven, but he is watching over you all.
Josh made all of us proud of him and we must continue to make Josh proud of all of us. We all miss his
honesty, dedication, enthusiasm, patriotism, energy, and deepest love for his family.

I agree with Judi...every time I get an email telling me that someone else has signed the guestbook, I say a prayer for Josh and his family. I've also "met" some very nice people who left their email addresses!

Dear family of Cpl. Joshua Watkins,

Yesterday, my wife and I were driving home to Savannah from visiting my mother in Lady Lake, FL. I saw the billboard on I-295, south of Lem Turner, facing northbound traffic, "HOME OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE." with the picture of Joshua. We were deeply affected by it, as our son is also a Marine. I pray that the thousands of people who see Joshua, and have no military connections, will be just a bit as moved as were were, and take heed of the words they see.
Joshua 's service and sacrifice, along with all of our other military who have made the ultimate sacrifice, should not and will not be forgotten.
Please accept our prayers and condolences.

God Bless you Cpl. Joshua Watkins.

I went to high school and graduated with Josh at Nease. He was a great man. I know how hard it has to be. My husband was in the military and that life was not easy. Josh is a brave man and I thank him for fighting for our freedom. He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. May God bless you.

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines

Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full

We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward

What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives

Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us

They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown

Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full
